With the A3 it is possible to change the instrument lighting using module 17 Instruments and changing the last digit of the seven digit code to a 4. This gives Needles ON Scales ON.
The list of options with the seven digit code are:
xxxxx?x
0 = Seatbelt Warning Inactive

xxxxxx?
0 = Needles OFF and Scales Off
1 = Needles ON and Scales Off
2 = Needles OFF and Scales ON
3 = Needles ON and Scales ON (Dimming active)
4 = Needles ON and Scales ON

Does anyone have access to an A1 and the correct cable to check if this works on the A1. We have taken the car to the dealers and they could not work out how to do it!!. The also contacted Audi UK who said it could not be done, but it seems to use the same J285 module to control the instruments as the A3. Maybe they are right but it would be rather nice to prove them wrong and get it to work.

Have you not even tried to test this via vcds mate?

No because I don't have the correct cable to fit the A1. As you know I did consider purchasing a replacement cable because it would cover both the A1 and the new A3 but as I've just ordered another 8P Sportback a new cable seems a bit expensive just to change the instrument lighting on my wife's A1. If I know it can be done then I can go back to the dealers and tell them how to do it!!

TBH dave, the difference in cost in the grand scheme of things isnt that much if you consider cost of fuelling, tax, servicing, new car cost etc etc for the access that you would like on your new car, iirc it was what approx £100 difference, that would then give you access to 99.99999% of vag cars old/new with no restrictions by RT, for me its a no brainer & not because I am selling them, just makes sense overall mate.

To go back/forth to dealer to code 1 option, what if you see something else you like, are you going to go back & forth each time, remember time has a cost too, no matter how you view it :)

True but I am retired and I like going to the dealers and they were going to do this for no charge. At the moment I only ever use mine to change my headlights when I go on holiday. I'll have think about it. All I really want is someone with VCDS, the correct cable and an A1 to check to see if can be done in a similar way to the A3. Perhaps I'll consider buying my wife the correct cable for Christmas!!

Fair point & I do understand your pov, but would you be paying someone some beer money for there help, cause for me, using that money towards the better cable seems the more logical way forward, just for a convenience factor.

If I knew for certain it could be coded I it would probably be worth buying a cable but spending £100 to find out it cannot be done. All I want to know is can it be done, I don't want anyone to do it for me.

To answer your question, we really need an autoscan from the car. Getting someone to connect a HEX-USB+CAN to it so we can find out all the installed modules and their software levels/coding would be the starting point. Then we might need some more information from the car if we do not currently have the info on that A1.

While we try to have all answers, there are simply too many perturbations in these cars to actually have them all. So, if you can work with us, perhaps we can work to find answers for you.

That said, you need a friend with a full VCDS to do the job.

I already have a full copy of VCDS myself but I only have a Micro-CAN cable which I understand will not work with the A1.

Is there anyone in the Bedford/Cambridge area with a HEX-USB+CAN cable willing to help.

Well it seems that changing the way the instrument lighting behaves on the A1 is not possible.

It turns out that, although the A1 has the same (J285) control module as my A3, it is coded totally differently. The code on the A1s is 41DE00 where as on my A3 it is 0032428. If I change the last digit from 8 to 4 it means my instrument lighting is on all the time. Unfortunately because the A1 is using this module to control other things it is not possible to change the instrument lighting setting. Still at least we now know that it cannot be done.

So do they share the same part number?

So do they share the same part number?

No not quite. The are both called module J285 but the one for the A1 has a hardware part no: 8X0 920 980 A and same for the software.

The one for the A3 is: 8P0 920 982 C with again the same number for the software. So similar but not the same.

When we looked at the module using the long coding there was not reference to the instrument light at all, unlike on the A3.

J285 is common to most vag cars mate, doesnt have anything to do with part number, just means instruments & referenced to J285 in elsa & vas, sometimes in etka but only as a searchable code, like g82 sender etc.

Now I'm the owner of a new Black Edition A1 (185ps) after reading previous posts on the A1 I thought I'd resurrect Dave's thread and hope that Bruce from Ross-Tech may see this and now be in a better position to help.

I copied a scan of my car, has anyone been able to change the instrument lighting yet?

Whooppeeee guess whose back, nice to see you around matey, only the other day I saw a post of yours & wondered where you'd been :)

Cheers Nigel, Its good to be back! :respekt:

With the A1 being fairly new, there's not the same following as the A3 but hopefully it will pick up.

Ross-tech have recently gone to release 11.11 but unfortunately they do not appear to have fully mapped the modules yet.

I have a list I want to do, the first being heated wing mirrors, wtf were Audi doing by not including this as standard especially on the spec of a Black Edition !! (abit like the glove box light on the A4 lol)

Hows your bambina mate, she's goota be 18months now

Neil
:beerchug:

TBH the A1 is on my radar atm as I fancy 1 lol.

It really is nice to see you back fella, some of the old crew lol.

Yeah I ave to say, the logic with vag sometimes defies me, how can you not fit heated mirrors on the BE, its a special edition, guess you checked the glass as maybe has wires behind.

She's 19 months rolling on 20 years, full of life, independence, love her to bits lol

& you mate, all settled down again as B8 went for reasons huh.

Yeah, 19 mnths soon flies by! My daughter's just turned 8 an I'm definately last in the bathroom every morning waiting lol.

Can't wait till you do get an A1, I feel lots of mods coming on then.

I must admit (in my limited capacity with fast cars), the 185 is unbelievable drive and due too its size, is one of the quickest cars I've had. A bit too much torque steer for my liking!

The A4 went when my job (public sector) was under threat from the condems policy on making large percentages redundant. I was under that dark cloud for well over 12 months but hopefully thats all been done now. My office has reduced by 50%. Couldn't risk a brand new A4 on the drive and no job!

If you want to practice modding on my car before you buy, just ask lol

atb

Neil

nb, just seen this new 'like' and 'thanks' buttons. I've lost all my rep? (and I had a fair bit!!)

Whilst I'm online Nige, would you pm me details of a new cable please and price. I'm thinking of getting another as I currently share mine. Missed your last group buy!

hello

Is it possible to fold mirrors automatically when you press the lock on the key through vcds

I have an Audi A1 with heated & folding mirrors but they only fold with a switch

Thanks

Have you checked the mmi settings as other cars with similar systems in vag range have this option.

I think because the A1 is fairly new in Ross-tech's eyes, they haven't yet been able to map/discover most of the modules yet. The new 11.11 release of vcd's did contain a few more updates regarding the A1 but only time will tell. Alot of the modules are still blank.

When I had my A4, I managed with other like minded people to post vcds scans and in some cases (by elimination) we were able to work out the coding albeit only for fairly minor things.

imho, as the A1 is not in USA yet, the development will be slow. Lets hope the likes of Bruce and Sebastion from Ross-Tech will spend some time on the A1 to bring it up in line with other Audi models although I apreciate Audi keep uping the stakes all the time.

Ross-Tech - keep up the good work

mah006 - it would be good if you could post a scan of your car, particularly regarding the heated and folding mirrors. Then if someone who just has the heated mirrors, posted their scan we might be able to work something out with regards to the start of a retro fit, particularly with the heated mirrors!

I have not got vcd cable at the moment i borrow my friends when hes about as he works away most of the time but i can scan my car when the cable becomes available.
I would have been interested in the group buy but that has expired.
I see that Heated Mirrors are standard fit for my2013 cars (June 12 onwards)

They should be standard for any vag car these days.

I'm going to audi tomorrow, so I'll see if there's any updates or check an A1 if has folding mirrors, question is, if you havnt got folding mirrors & code it to have, does it then add the option in the mmi systems to fold.

Did you have any luck at Audi with the folding mirrors issue?

Back there tomorrow mate, sorry forgot today, as was very much under pressure for a job to double din convert, rns, fbmfsw, steering cu, fix glovebox, fix dash, trim climate, facelift console, all started at noon aswell, arrgghhh, lol.

Hello Nigel

Did you find time at Audi to find out if the A1 can be coded through vcds to fold mirrors when locking

TIA

Sorry but atm I dont have any info on this.

It is possible to fold mirrors upon lock with a key through Vcds the mirrors then unfold when you turn the ignition on if you have the folding mirrors option on your A1
It was found on an italian forum
