Ashtray delete/non-smoker tray retrofit - Pic heavy

LOL! well thats weird as you can see it on my car which is a 2005 A3, others have this too.

Ok so i have been looking around the net and i have found this link to an older thread: http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/new-a3-s3-sportback-8p-chassis/125556-ashtray-led-strip.html

and this:
Google Translate

Looks like i have got the wrong letter on the end :blownose:

Just got the trim part and of course it doesn't come with the light or light bar. :banghead:

did you not see the above comment? maybe you can change the part to this?
the google translate link has this in there:

The part I have is in this pic (at the bottom):

Think I need the light bar at the top as well. It mentioned something about the 8P0 864 138 A part being for double DIN in the link you posted but the translations were a bit iffy.

ahhh that makes much more sense now then...
so you have the right part just no light bar. so if you just buy the light bar you can do it? do you also have the glass reflector on the part you got like the pic above?

Thanks for the guide, I've just fitted the tray and it was very helpful

Like a fool I decided to do the whole no smoking pack and replace the cigarette lighter as well so the job took me 2 hours and involved getting the car into this ridiculous state:

Looks good now it is done though:

I wish I had the balls to do that mod to my car! The thing is I work on cig machines all the time and don't wanna touch my car!

Yeah I have the clear plastic part which is fitted in to the black trim on the pic above. I don't have the middle piece from that pic, will I need that?

if you need a place to get the light from you could always tap into the wire behind the esp button and light up the bulb from there... or from the light that was in the ashtray.

I found a good use for the ashtray holder on mine.....you've done a bucket load of work on yours!

I've already got this huge pocket in my A3, didn't know it was part of some non smokers pack! The pocket is huge with a red light hidden up there, you could fit a baby in it

This would also explain why i have a cigarette lighter socket but no lighter, interesting! You could put a lighter in the socket but no way would the flap then close on it as it would stick out a bit.

nice and stealthy! I put my Carmex in there and the fabric thing used to clean my shades

i would do an ashtray delete but i like the carbon fiber look too much :p

yours is huge because you have a single din

I was hoping the connector was already there, however, if not, then yes, the ambient light connector for the ash-tray looks the same. :icon_thumright:

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread.

Did the ashtray delete today only issue was I couldn't get the HVAC out. With a spot of patience and long enough socket extensions you can reach the 8mm bolts at the front of the grab handles so therefore it is possible to complete this job without removing the HVAC.

When I had the grab handles off it looks like the HVAC has a 'clip' on its bottom, both sides which need popping with a small screwdriver in order to remove........... either way, got the job done and looks pretty sweet. Just waiting for dealers to get me the 12V covered socket now to get rid of the fag lighter.

You got a part number for this Fag Lighters delete. I asked audi and they had no clue (in fact they ordered in the standard unit)

Many thanks to the original poster MartayMcFly for the superb guide on how to fit the cubby hole tray..

I ordered one of these the other day (tad under £12..00 from TPS) and fitted it today.

The guide was superb, pics excellent, without it I also would of struggled to find the last 2 screws that hold the grab handle things..

The final result is top notch, much more useful than the ash tray, and a great place to bung phones and wallets while travelling.

I well recommend this mod, easy to do, took under 30 mins and I reckon I could of done it without removing the A/C controller, although it would of been a lit more fiddly.

Thanks again MartayMcFly, superb guide, spot on !!.

I think both setups have pluses and minuses. With the ashtray it's useful for stealth installs, I put my Parrot handsfree screen in there and it closes as normal with a bit of adjustment (hate seeing them screwed to the dash!). But he non-smoker pack gives a lot ofspace.

I'm considering doing the same for my RS4 now, but looks like it's going to be much more complicted as the grab handles are moulded into the dash. If I get round to it, I'll post another thread in the A4/S4 or RS4 section.

Did this Mod Last night. It's Excellent. I just can't understand why there is no cubby behind the Ashtray, there's loads of room behind the Curved bit of Plastic behind the Ashtray... Now I have a Large (Probably 5" x 6") cubby for holding things. (So Doubt an iPad Mini would fit).

Some Points to Note...

To Replace the Cigarette Lighter with the 12v Socket & Flap. You don't need to take out the Center Console, Just prise out the Bit of Plastic under the Handbrake. Stick your Fingers in and Squeeze the Clip holding the Cig Lighter toward the front of the Car and it should Pop up. it's a Straight P&P Swap. took me less than 2 minutes to do.

I got the LED Light Diffuser. but no Light Bar. I don't have the ILP so there's no Ambient light shining into the Cubby. Does anyone Know where this LED is connected behind the HVAC? Some of the above posts are Confusing.

Double DIN no ILP. What parts do I need to complete it with the Ambient LED?

Cheers.

just get the light bar and connect it to the light on the cig lighter... so when the ring on that comes on, the light bar will come on too

This would require some wires to extend from Cig Lighter to up under the HVAC?

What I do have is the Light Bar/Diffuser from the Ashtray, the LED from the Ashtray. I could Gerry rig them up, but need some wire to extend the wire up under the Storage Tray. Any Idea how to get the correct wire? I can just solder and heat shrink it.

Can anyone tell me the order number for all the parts to do this mod.
Thanks

The Parts are:

8P0864138A xxx Trim # LED diffuser (Goes under the HVAC with lens for ambient light for Shelf)
8P0863301A xxx Shelf # tray (The Actual Storage Shelf to replace the Ashtray Unit)
8P0863387A xxx Trim # Socket (The 12v Socket with Flap to cover it).

There are a number of options after this depending on if you have ambient light or not. I don't so have to rewire the ashtray LED up under the LED Diffuser somehow.

thats easy... just cut the wires and extend it... pretty simple with the positive and negative. if i remember correctly it even uses the same end connector

Hi Ash,

Any Particular wire or will normal repair wire work?

the ashtray light bar wire is long enough to be routed up there, mine fit with a little tug of the wire
