2.0 TFSI Coil Packs on a 1.8T

Ok... before this thread ends up going wobbly and fracturing a few rules I would suggest maybe you consider a group buy?... pm an admin, start the thread once approved and we can take it from there...

Would also be nice in the mean time to get a sticky on this as I imagine this is going to take off quite nicely and get some FAQ's answered links/companies etc, but would be good to be informed on the situation rather than being drawn into hoping each coil is going to give you plus 5hp to anyone coming across this in future.

I'm very interested in this as I'm getting a bit of spark plug blow out as they're in need of changing now seems like a good little project to make a upgrade on the ignition system to give a more efficient burn and give a smoother driving experience :)

just made up some trial fit adapters, these are in 10mm steel as its easier for trial purposes rather than the 12mm aluminium they will be finished in, they arnt countersunk yet or nor have i used the capped bolts, but you get the idea

just need them to be trialed on a bolt down cover, then i will sort a group buy

I will trial them for you if you need a guinea pig?
I have just ordered a set of coils and have a AMK which has the bolt holes.

Im gonna try and get some made from my dad at work.. Whats the normal depth of the adaptors? the rest i guess i can make him measure and make.

14mm, although they can be thinner tbh, iv had some template prototypes in 10mm made and they work fine, although aesthetically 14mm is better. I'm just making some tweaks then il have a few sets available, will organise a group buy accordingly

I'm running mine without any adapters and they're fine. They don't really move about and they don't look too bad. I will get some adapters at some point though but not going to pay silly money.

Yeah but I reckon you need adapters with bolt down cover to keep them in place as there was a lot more movement when I tested the adapters on the bolt down cover. Sent final plans to my mate yesterday dani, as soon as he has a chance they'll be machined.

Coolio.

So to clarify, what gap is best to run? Currently on my 1.8t coils im running 0.8 gap!

0.8mm is std for non mapped 1.8t's... 0.7mm on mapped ones... I run 0.85mm on the TFSI packs vs 0.7mm on the 20v packs

My feeler gauge goes 0.8 or 0.9, so which would be best for the tfsi coils? Like said at the min im running standard 0.8 on 20vt coils.

Most feeler gauges have smaller gauges too... 0.85 would be a 0.8 and a 0.05 together :)

Oright you set of gits, i didnt think of that did i, thats why i have you guys :) haha.

Get NGK's... Bosch Super 4's aren't fantastic... ran them for a while but was having the odd missfire so put NGK's in...

BKR6EIX (iridium) from NGK Car and Van applications Petrol Engines are £5.90+vat each... the std plugs are Platinums (PFR6Q) and are £7.32+vat from the same site...

<tuffty/>

Do you have the full part no for the iridium ones please? I have some spare cash in my Paypal account and am going to replace the bosch super 4's as heard a few negative comments about them after I got them.
I have looked on eBay for them but the BKR6EIX brings up loads of different ones.

Thanks.

AWESOME GTI will have a stocking order this week coming for those of you who want to get. Talk with Mark Ash over there.

well ive been reading up on this thread.. and got to the point where TFSI coils will only make the engine or the sort smoother.. however will i need a new coil pack wiring loom etc.. anything i might be missing as i found these and will be getting them on payday...

Awesome - Red Ignition Coil Pack Set 2.0TFSI

I'm still running mine without spacers and its fine, waste of money if you ask me, they're just engine bay bling.

So westy i gather i dont need the adapters ... ?

No mate not at all. If you look at a coil pack it has rubber round it to grip onto the top of the spark plug. As long as your plugs are not coated in oil the coils will stay there by themselves. The adapters do look nice and will fill the gap but they're not really needed. I will get some for mine purely just to fill the gap but I'm waiting for a cheaper set to appear ;)

ah sweet do you have a linky ? wondering the ECS push down holders are worthless im assuming and the adapters would be better suited to fill the gap ?

Did a write up in my build thread :)

Thanks Tuffty appreciate it yeah im quite pedantic with the car so that gap would ****** the crap out of me... so the adapter would be a deffo... where can i possibly get the adapters from ? couldnt find any sadly

Do they stay where they should on a bolt down cover without adapters? I'm looking at this but I'm not desperate so don't fancy buying the adapters if I don't have to but don't want them to pop out!!!

Slowcoach read this mate...personally id prefer the adapters with it

You can run them on AMK or BAM without spacers, they won't pop out, they just look a bit stranger because they sit 15mm higher... I definitely wouldn't run them without spacers if you have the square hole type cover with bolt down coils that pre-facelifts tend to have

Having read the whole thread..... I thought exactly the same, mad to run them without spacers on a bolt down rocker, I only ask as it looks like the photo s3dave posted has a bolt down rocker with no adapters?!
