My wife is saying the stereo is knacked in her car. Speakers sound distorted at low volume but very rarely it was fine. Im thinking the amp is shot. Any clues or pointers please?

If it's distortion from both tweeter and woofer and worse when cold then it's probably the amp, they seem to suffer from dry joints, which as they warm up improves. You can reflow the main joints on the PCB if you're handy with a solder sucker and iron, or get a replacement off ebay

I've been suffering from this problem too.
Andy, I recently brought a replacement amp from eBay (very sure it was from you), but the problem still exists, in fact its actually worse.
I have total confidence that the new amp works correctly, I brought that amp from ebay because I was pretty sure it was you selling it, so that rules out the amp being the problem.
Its definately not the speakers because once warmed up they work fine.
Any ideas of what else this could be?
My thoughts at the moment are that the connector to the amp is the problem and has some loose wiring that when warmed up tightens. This would explain why after changing the amp it has got worse because I will have disturbed the wiring, furter loosening the connections.

The Bose connector is a pretty clean tight fit. Does the problem effect all the speakers, front & back, woofers & tweeters? I would remove one of the effected speakers and check the cone moves smoothly in and out and there is no crunchiness to the voice coil. I have seen the Bose speakers get slightly damp and the cone dries out slightly deformed. This causes the movement in/out to be non uniform and causes a scratchy sound at certain frequencies. Never seen a wiring fault on the 8L wiring, it's always the speakers or the amp.
