S3 Economy- Genuine Stats Please!

Ok so I have had my 58 plate 170 TDI A3 for about a month anddddddd.... I am bored. Thinking about getting me a facelifted S3 (58 plate) and I was wondering if I could get some feedback from S3 owners with regards to economy when town driving, economy when on a long motorway run, common problems with the car, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Everyday short runs = 25mpg tops

Long runs = 35mpg tops

Hhahaha I knew auto trader were lying with there long run- 42 mpg! LIARS!! Thank you
 
I've just driven like a daisy all the way to Luxembourg. Then paris this morning and I got 31mpg.

my first 8p was the 170 TDI 58 plate. used to last 600 miles to a tank. now only get 250-300 on the same size tank.

So basically double your fuel cost now. :)
 
But a millllllllion times more fun :p Also I won't be doing such long journeys so although a tank won't last me as long I won't be having to fillip to much so not too bad :)
 
Hard driving around 25 MPH, (could be worse if you are really stupid :) drive sensibly up to 35MPH, I live in the country side, though go to various towns, but on average 30 ish in general
 
Thanks for the help :) Definitely A3 then. Was in a focus RS (450bhp) and A supercharged 3.2 A3 (420BHP) with a facelift over the weekend and although the RS does look nice, the interior feels and looks cheap unlike the interior of there A3!

At 70mph I get around 33mpg and round town usual about 26ish
 
is it only me who can't get over 25mpg?
 
Mine was less economical before the modding started and at best was about 28mpg average.

After Stg1 and 2 it would average 30mpg over a mix of town and country roads.
Even Stg3 will still return 30mpg driven carefully but as with any car,use the power and the mpg drops.

Stg4 is a struggle to return 30mpg and 20 mpg is easy.
 
I'm getting 25mpg and have never had 30mpg even on a long journey. My car is now stage 1 mapped and so I will see if this has had any effect over this tank full. I've only just got some V Power back in her as well since the panic buying issues last week.
 
Round the doors and short journeys no more than 22-24mpg an a run (long) around 32-34mpg coming from 4 years of ownership and i never batter mine, should of but didn't...
 
Average over around a year so far and 6000 miles is ~24mpg, including maybe 3 or 4 trips over 100 miles and the rest being in and around town. Highest I've seen for a trip was 37mpg iirc, and usually sits between 22 and 24 on daily trips. I've got a Saab 9-3 Estate 1.9ttid courtesy car at the moment, and it's only getting about 30mpg with an auto 'box and a light (and very bored) foot.
 
audi upgrades
Long term average is 27mpg.
Motorway type driving is around 35mpg.
2008 Audi S3 APR chipped.
62000k's no probs to speak of.

I generally get about 30mpg from town driving / A roads. Thats just driving normally tho, without the heavy right foot. If driving briskly, I generally get 25mpg. On a long haul, i.e. motorways, the best I've seen is 32mpg. Not the most frugal car in the world, but far from the guzzler my evo was.
 
Covered 22k miles in my S3, long term average (never re set) was 26mpg over the 2 and a bit years. Mixed driving , short runs to work circa 12 miles per day, the odd blast out over the moors and an odd long motorway run every now and again.
 
The extra torque from even a Stg1 remap does make an appreciable difference to economy when you have to drive like that,as you no longer need to stir the engine up to get up hills etc.
 
tbhif youre asking about economy on a car like an s3 you shouldnt be getting one, you just have to accept that it does have its fun with your wallet

I do tend to agree with that,but having had a couple of cars that would easily do 10mpg or less,to get this sort of power AND reasonable mileage is a nice surprise,and to be fair,the OP was also asking about common problems.
So...on that note,coilpacks,plugs,and a few complaints about oil usage.
 
Low 20s around town and rush hour commuting.
High 20s on a run, maybe 30-31 if you really try.
Teens when on a hoon.

The S3 is not a cheap car to run.
I am finding my current S3 DSG thirstier than the previous manual, maybe thats partly due to the fact the new one still only has 800mile on it, and DSG of course.

I am finding it particularly painful having just come from a derv.

I disagree with this really, I think in this day and age Economy is important, it was one of the reason I bought S3 over some other cars in the same bracket. For me if I am in the mood to thrash it, accept rubbish MPG, when I am having to poodle along behind streams of traffic and having to accept that, it is important not to have to worry about MPG, and I know it can give a return of over 35 mpg in these situations, not like my old RX 8 it was like 18-22 mpg what ever.

I would think a DSG in auto driving lightly will give a better MPG over a manual, stats say so too, though I would guess a manual driven properly it would be close.

You can actually drive an S3 quite fast overall and get a decent return if you ease off the throttle at the right times, I often do not need to brake for roundabouts because I came off the throttle at the right time, even driving at well over speed limit, (What country though :p )
 
this is true, i just meant as a general statement given he is coming from a diesel youre not going to expect anywhere near the economy and f it is more power he is after perhapps the 2.0T would provide a happier medium
 
For an AWD car that cracks 60 in around 5.5 secs and 100 in 13 or so, to have a realistic touring MPG of 30+ is very good.

My S3 S-Tronic is mainly used around town with the odd longer run, almost always on Super Unleaded and runs a Bluefin map. The long-term DIS average is showing 26.2mpg, although this usually creeps towards 27-28 in the summer. I get 34-35mpg if taking it easy on a long run at 60 leptons and around 29mpg for journeys at around 85 leptons.

I get 300 miles for £75ish in my manual S3 (£1.39 per litre if you want to do the calculations). My journey is mixed about 30% town, 30% motorway and 40% country roads. Its great for overtaking the 40mph brigade on the country roads an has better mpg than my last car, which was the V8 version of the S4 and cost £75ish for 220 miles.

I will probably miss it in May when I swap it for the 3L TDI A4, but I hope £75 gets me closer to 500 miles. At least I should have a smile on my face when I visit a Shell garage every other week rather than once a week.

Ive just fired a race map into the Ducati. I did 65 miles last week thrashing it around the Trough of Bowland. I then filled up with another £12.

Its worse than the S3 but is a hell of a blast
 
I rarely get above 19mpg round town. On a run it will do about 33mpg if I'm careful.
 
Town driving and i never see more than 25mpg. Revo stage1. Have seen 34mpg on one trip, but i thought it was a copper behind me and i was driving like a grandma!! That was before the map.
 
Did a round trip today of about 65 70 miles, average overall just under 35 mpg, though lots of traffic plodding and some stop start, and a few overtakes, i filled up while on the jorney, right up and dis showed 425 miles for the tank
 
Long term average of 28mpg here (6k miles) - have seen 34mpg before, but just gone stage 1 (325ps) so hoping it might go up slightly.
