Facelift Dumbo Mirrors Fitted - Guide

to be honest with the cold weather and work getting busy i havent had the time to test it out... but it is on my to do list so when things calm down i will test it out and update the thread

Can UK folding mirrors work on a North American car? When i say this does the motors bases that the mirrors have angled in a certain way or this will not matter and i can just install them on my car. I have a 2006 audi a3.

LHD & RHD do have different angles yes, so its upto you if you want to try, they will fit, but may not give you the angle you require.

I have actually fitted lhd to a rhd car, the angle was different, but when used on the road, you could still see everything perfectly well.

So then there must be different part numbers for the LHD mirrors. Does anyone know the part numbers for LHD electric mirrors for a 2006 audi a3.

2006 Audi A3 LHD
3 door version:
left mirror: 8P1 858 531 H
right mirror: 8P1 858 532 H

5 door version:
Left mirror: 8P1 858 531 L
right mirror: 8P1 858 532 L

Thanks for those part numbers, I have the 5 door a3 and also you know the switch that connects to the driver door side is there 2 part numbers for that aswell? one for the whole door module piece that holds the switches and then the little switch that will turn 360 degrees.

right so for the mirror switch you will need:

the 360 degrees turning mirror switch: 8E0 959 565 A
the led optical ring for the new power folding mirror light: 8P0 919 173 C

then the only other thing left is that you will need to either drill a hole into the plastic surround to allow the new power folding light to shine through (the 6 o'clock light) or you can buy a new trim that already has the hole for the light: 8P3 959 557 B

i just drilled a hole in mine after following this guide for the Audi A4: DIY Folding Mirror Install

Thanks now the only problem for me is sourcing LHD electronic mirrors, If anyone comes across any please let me know.

Do the auto dimming wing mirrors only come in the auto folding version? I'm in the US and would like to get the auto dimming glass, but don't care about the folding motors.

No, you can buy dimming bases with wiring in without having folding, but personally I cant see point of fitting new bases if you dont just pay the extra for folding, but each to there own.

You can buy the auto dimming mirror glass on their own and wire the door module up to the auto dimming interior mirror to get them to work. No need for the folding motors but you might have to manually wire the glass to the door modules as your original bases may not have the wires in place.
I did have a set of bases at one point that had the wires in place for auto dimming without the folding motors, so it is available

I can see doing the folding mirrors as an extra, but the dimming glass is somewhat of a necessity for me. I had laser eye surgery done awhile ago and am pretty light sensitive as a side effect. In my old car at night I just drove with the mirror flipped all the time, and I still use my hands to block the side mirror at times.

Thanks for the info, was mainly hoping it was cheaper if it were possible. Sounds like it's a pain to get the parts in the first place, but I would really like to do this mod.

the thing is that the dimming mirror glass is about £150 each from Audi!
i was lucky to get a real bargain and the get the pair of the autodimming mirrors with folding for just £140.

Right so since i have some time off work for Easter i will be looking to do the relay fitting this weekend and see where i can get with that.

Check your tilt sensor button & interior sensor button on drivers door edge.

Check they turn on/off when pressed.

Nigel here is a weird one which you may have come across, the buttons on the sides of the doors work and the function is fine but the LEDs dont light up on the lower button on the door and i noticed that my rear window lock button on the drivers side window switch no longer lights up when the rear windows are locked. the buttons function perfectly fine and i have checked the wiring and thats all perfect but i still dont get the lights.

I have however got the LED status light on the locking unit and the upper button on the door side... and when i do a VCDS test on the lighting in the door card it all lights up... so why would it not light up when it is pressed even though it is doing the job?

Just a little update on what i have been working on today :)

It got dark by the time i finished so its a dark video

The 2 buttons were changed to become 1 on MY11 onwards cars, so if you've used a facelift P, Q etc module for the doors then you will experience the issues with the buttons, but are you saying when you go into MVB for that function the module shows it as functioning properly, as you may see the 1 button is now doing both jobs even if you're pressing just the 1.

As for the button light, iirc it was wiring, but when I get back I'll check & advise as it changed on the sb for the illumination iirc.

Looks good, well done, question is, did you tap into the existing circuit via the switch control or wire into the mirror fold feed, as the original feed has its own issues when door module power is removed, also I wouldnt advise leaving power on the fold/unfold when not in use as it can burn the motor out.

All you need to do now is include full closure at the same time on 1 click as mine & you've sussed it :)

ok i'll double check on VCDS again but i was pretty sure it was coming up as separate functions depending on what button i pressed.
While i was out there fitting in the relay i did check the button on the door side again and it is the bottom one that lights up and the top one that stays off.

the relay uses power from the main fuse box, and sends a signal to the mirrors via the mirror fold feed on the 16 pin connector (pins 14 and 15)
it picks up the lock/unlock signal from the 'CL safe' wire and open/closes the mirrors based on that.

what do you mean by full closure on 1 click?

Yeah thats the only thing thats a pita, going to each door for the new feeds, I had another design on top of this one which was allot less hassle, but it relies on a few things that audi deemed necessary to disable after a period of time, hence havnt bothered following that further as I cant reprogram the modules (yet) lol

Only 2 ways to do it were latch relay or timer relay, so it had enough time to fold/unfold as my previous S3 system had issues with the time it had from the central locking command to fold/unfold fully, hence sometimes you had a floppy mirror, resolved with timer relays though.

Meaning you can get a full closure of all windows/roof of 1 click of the remote button for lock :) rather than holding it down for 3 seconds or so to full close.

Nigel and Ash, I sure hope you both get together to write a sticky thread for the Faqs section when you have finished. Would be useful informative addition for others to use. Thanks in advance guys. :respekt::)

ahh i get what you mean with the full closure on on click... though if i tried to use the same relay i have to do that then the windows would all open when the car is unlocked :p

I'll see how i get on with the mirrors now as they are, should be ok as i was testing them as i went along.

Not if you use it as a trigger 1 way only :moa:

yep thats the one :)

The issues with designing circuits & installing for others are damage control, so including circuitry that stops any current/voltage feeding back down wires they dont need to have, thus so no issues later, the 361 is a good design, easy to implement, but if you want to supply a kit that allows for these, then you need a proper pcb unit for this to include diodes & possible mini relays etc, other issues are if the design holds power in a state until such time the state is changed, it can shorten the life of the system its feeding, if you get me.

Done a good job there mate, kudo's, be nice to see some others taking the initiative more :)

What pees me of about audi, is the simplest programming of several modules & adding the on/off feature within coding or dis would allow this option, I've tested & know exactly what triggers the mirrors to work either way using the audi system in place, but as they damn well disable some systems when car is turned of, I cant trigger the oem system to run, so damn annoying that is, as it would have been iirc, minor wiring, 2 relays & maybe a resistor all in the drivers door, argghhhh.

hmmm i was thinking about that earlier, that the mirrors will be in constant fold unfold state now so what will become of the motors... but lets see how it goes, its a nice novelty to have.

the thing that i dont understand with the Audi system on the A3 is why they wouldnt include such a basic option to make it fold on lock... you can do it on the A4, A5, Q5, Q7 etc... through the MMI with a little coding beforehand, why then give the A3 a manual switch the doesnt work as soon as you take the damned key out of the ignition?
Dumba$$ Audi

I cant remember which wire it was for closure, lol, I left it in a test state, didnt go back to it due to kid was along then, that was 2 years ago lmfao, so thats taken precidence for the rest of my life, I'm back sunday so I'll pull the card of & check :)

Eccellent work bro, I really need that mod in my life :beerchug: got a few other bits to do as well I'll drop u a pm soon. Really good work on the folding mirrors:respekt:

Cheers Nigel, much appriciated.

Rich its a nice mod, should have been a standard for anyone that has folding mirrors, but yh just let me know when and we can start organising

Great work Ash :icon_thumright:........I'm now very tempted to buy some folding mirrors ............."leaveeeeeee it yehhhhh" lol :hubbahubba:

Excellent work Ash. You now need to write a condensed sticky with pics to put in the A3 section and the job is complete. :respekt:

Sandra. :)

hello itwasntme187!!!

i've got a seat leon fr 1m,i've already bought the audi relay and i am very interested to do this modification on my car.i've already got the automatic folding mirrors .
i've read that it can be done on all vag group vehicles.
so,can you please help me out to to this?
i've been studying many diagram but i need someone that have already done this modification, cuz,i don't want to ruin something.

HI there,

Thanks, i am trying to get as much as i can done on the car to get it to the way i want it with a good spec.
What year Leon do you have? i thought on the leons you just needed to hold down the lock button for a few seconds and they should fold up themselves?
nonetheless the diagram you posted looks roughly the same as what i did on mine though there are a couple minor changes on the newer mirrors that dont need a couple wires that you have in your diagram.
Where abouts are you based?

Ash

You think thats annoying, on my Dad's touareg you can't open or close the windows the remote button. The option is not there. You have to put the key in the lock.
He has every other option under the sun but VW thought they'd miss this on out. Stupid VAG!!

I've been reading this thread trying to work out what you did to the 361 relay and I can't find any thing, I might have missed it.
What wiring did you do?
I run the 361 at the moment for my mirrors..

Scott funny enough you could use the 361 to make the touareg close the windows on lock like Nigel mentioned earlier with the full closure system.
Its actually easy theoretically so it should be a walk in the park for you. The install is just a pain with all the wiring that is needed,
Ill pm you some details on it. I'm just waiting for another sunny day so I can go back and do another little mod with the 361 and something else I have planned with the mirrors :ninja:

Cheers man.
Just looking at the wiring diagrams.

hello friend!

finally i did it,now i've got the automatic folding mirrors when i arm or disarm my car through the remote control.
you are right that in the diagram there was couple of more wires that i really don't have.
no,on the leons if you press for a couple of seconds the open button on the remote, the mirrors didn't fold in automatically.

but there is a small problem that after this modification with the audi relay,i am not able to use the fold/unfold mirror button that i was using before to fold/unfold them manually.is it same to you?
i'm from italy,so pardon my english.
thankx mate
