I’ve been asked about doing a thread on occasions but never really had the time. However, I managed to find an hour this afternoon to sit down and pull something together. So here goes…

I picked up my Ming 1999 S3 pre-facelift in October 20010 for £4995 with 96k on the clock.

To describe it as ‘unloved’ would be an understatement but, at purchase, I felt that I had got a good deal at the time and set about giving it some much needed TLC.

I’d previously owned some BMW’s, an M3 and a 335CD to note but when it came to selling them, I wanted something pratical, that could be a bit of a project and retain some pace.

After reading many posts on ASN, I plumped for the S3 as it seemed to fit the bill.

As standard, like many users on here have described, the S3 felt underpowered and too heavy for it’s own good. A car wanting to go quicker but seemingly unable to do so…a bit like a german gundogon choke chain…tidy looking, muscular where it needs to be but some what restricted.

I was content in many ways but dissappointed in others and set about seeing what could be done to free things up a little. Here’s a brief description, with accompanying photographs, of what I’ve been up to ever since.

I’ve never liked the standard 17” Avus wheels and when I picked the car up, as the tyres were appalling, I immediately exchanged them for RS4’s with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres.

Here’s the car shortly after it’s purchase with very minor modifications…the RS4wheels, new tyres, aero wipers, a green air filter and forge 007dv. I also immediately remapped the car at SWICT,Bristol, using a custom code to around 250bhp.
4722-1.jpg

I replaced the standard gear knob with one from the S3 8P, added JL speakers throughout and an Alpine headunit.
4723-2.jpg

The standard floor mats were replaced, with custom ones from Hamburg, TT pedals were added and a matching leather armrest with rare internal cupholders.
4724-3.jpg

I added LED internal external light bulbs, including H7’s and upgraded to 6000 HID 2 Xenons in April 2011.

Rear mats
4727-6.jpg

I then started the external cosmetic changes to make it look a little bit more modern and aggressive. This included the private plate, the LCR splitter, painting the front upper grill surround black and the calipers red. I also uprated toFerrodo DS2500 pads and Zimmerman drilled discs. When on the ramps, I uprated and added a KW suspension kit, lowering it 20mm at the front and 15mm at the back. I added 11mm forge hubcentric spacers to thefront and 16mm to the rear to fill the wheel arches and H&R anti-roll barsto aid the handling. All in February2011.
4728-7.jpg

I then added the Forge FMIC with forge red silicone hoses in June 2011 with 3”downpipe, 200 cell sport cat and full custom stainless from infinity exhausts. Good sound and performance gains.
4730-9.jpg

The plate, a gift from the wife, with ‘vorsprung durch technik’ the Audi slogan meaning ‘advanced through technology’ was added, an idea I lifted from Sandip,as I thought it was a nice subtle touch.
4731-10.jpg

I then had the rear windows tinted a factory smoke in August 2011, trying to avoid the ‘van look’, to provide more privacy and modern appearance.
4732-11.jpg

Due to the black Recaro leather interior, I was sensitive to the fact that this would make the tints look too dark but, as you can see in the image below, you can still see through them but it’s greatlyreduced and achieved what I wanted.

4736-15.jpg

LCR 4-pot Brembo’s fitted in October 2011. I had them treated and entirely reconditioned/repainted after an ebay purchase, of £500,before adding new pads and pagid 323mm discs at a cost of £200. They are still my favourite upgrade.

At the same time I had a neuspeed quickshifter, wishbone bushes, lower enginemount installed with forge adjustable rear tie-bar to sort the camber out.
4737-16.jpg

I added some facelift rear light clusters, in January 2012, before I had the carback on the ramps following a cracked K04 for further upgrades; including the XS Power manifold (Sam Bryantspecial for £197)and a Turbodynamics stage 3 K04 hybrid (£800 trade price).

4738-17.jpg

4741-20.jpg

4742-21.jpg

I then added a new custom made tip, red Forge upper tip and aluminium lowersection. The vehicle was custom remapped again, taking into account all upgrades, up to 310bhp and 295lb torque.

The level of torque then caused my clutch to rapidly slip within the next month on the 130k mile vehicle and replacement was necessary. I approached Linda at CG Motorsport whoprovided me with a 6-paddle racing clutch and dual mass flysheel. All in all the parts were about £500 + labourbut well worth it, with the car engaging with urgency but now able to deliverythe increased power to the wheels. I cannot recommend CG Motorsport highly enough.

Currently the car is back on the ramps for uprated upper engine mount replacement, boost gauge install and some other minor modifications in and around the engine bay to resolve some little niggles that have emerged. I’ll post the photos of the old mounts andamendments to the vehicle when I have them to hand.

Good stuff Jim, you've done more on your car in 2yrs than I have done in 10! lol

Thanks guys. Glad you like it.

I have to say jojo your posts, along with a few other, provided the inspiration and much needed guidance for the progress that's been made. So many thanks for posting those experiences. I hope this helps the next gen.

Love the car mate. I'm currently waiting for the S3 floor mats to arrive anytime between the 3rd and 9th of this month. They look really good.

Where abouts did you get the tint done? What shade is that? And also may I ask how much it cost you? Just i have the same colour car and think it looks brilliant.

Keep up the good work dude!

Thanks. The mats are a nice touch, you'll like them.

I had the tints done by a guy called Adam who owns perfect tinting. He is based in bristol and his telephone number is 07810300464. I paid about £130 for back three windows. He used high quality/grade tints though and not the cheap stuff many use to make it more durable. He comes out onsite too. Took him about 2 hours in total I recall. I wanted it to match the factory shade seen on modern cars today and he stipulated that that was about 30%-35% I seem to recall, so I have in all three rears matching. I was mindful of keeping it subtle, avoiding too much of a contrast and especially with the black leather interior. Hope that helps.

how big is the lower alloy part of the tip?

If bolts directly onto the turbo but I do not recall the exact measurements. It was custom made to effectively funnel the air into it as the standard silicone ones didn't do enough. I was aware of the badger 5 products but wanted to experiment with alternatives to see what could be done. An aluminium guy worked on it for us and did a tidy job. I'm out doing bits on the car today, so will come back to you with measurements when I can.

Good interesting read Jim, im especially liking the wheels (are they rs6) and the red brakes. Totally transforms it. I think i nice fbsw would look ace inside though. :)

Thanks. They are RS6 reps but very good quality. You never know what wheels look like until on and I'd never seen them on an S3 but think that they work well.

Having lots done today and will post some stuff later on. Seems to be a weekend of builds.

Cool, I will check out this thread later for progress reports and pics. Hope it all goes smoothly. Have a good easter weekend. :)

Looks great Jim! Nice to see a pre-facelift shine :) rods soon then ey? Btw how did you do your grill?

Thanks. Rods will be done at some point but I like my current mapping and smooth delivery, so no great rush. Not chasing any more power to be honest.

Only sprayed it last year but I'm having all of the grills and plastic surrounds covered in vinyl in the next week to finish those off. Needs to me at least 3mm thick to be durable enough.

Lol...So I keep getting told. :) I need to pop up there to test it on bills ramps anyway. If he does red ones, I might be tempted...

Thanks. I'm very happy with the wheels...they look great in rotation and immense on the rolling roads. Wasn't sure when I bought them but a real head turner on an old vehicle.

Hi Rory

Welcome.

Ha...thats funny. Small world. I love the Nogaro blue ones, we'll have to meet sometime to compare notes. Is yours standard?

Infinity are great. Mines been there for 2 weeks more or less. I thought that i had a manifold problem but instead my engine had been rocking due to perished mounts after running high power on old ones.

As it was there, martin at infinity is doing the work. He's a top guy and will be familiar with s3's having gone through the mill on a few including mine. Im Having upgraded top mounts installed, new brackets, turbo boost gauge, 6000 hid 2 xenons, new red silicone ancillary hoses amongst others things put on it.

Funnily enough, I've just missed a call and am now picking it up tomorrow 9am.

Then it's vinyl grills and a modification to the footrest for the TT look.

Gear knob is an S3 8P one.

looking great jim, where did you get the s3 mats from?

It is a small world indeed!, and yeah my S3's got a couple of mods on her, she's a facelift and rocking a remap to a proven 240 something, BBS CH's, lowered 30mm, forge 007p and I just fitted a debaffled charge pipe last week.

On the note of meeting up if the weathers nice on the weekend then I could pop over clevedon way, drop me a PM ;) I'd love to have. A good look at her ;)

Cheers ;)

A German guy from hamburg in germany off beat called castor. I emailed it to a few asn users. Pm me and I'll send the details to you. Great mats.

Finally back off of the ramps.

This is the engine Bay today...new top mounts, new engine mount brackets, new Porshe Oil cap, new Porshe Water cap, new red silicone ancilliary/vacuum hoses.

And for those that haven't seen this...the S3 leather armrest with the 'cupholder' optional extra...

Car certainly feels different with the new engine mounts and much more raw.

Some good progress there Jim. Looks excellent. Whats next? :)

Great work Jim, really coming along nicely.

...The Porsche bits look ace.

Some good progress there Jim. Looks excellent. Whats next? :)

Thanks.

Professional detailing, wrapping in black 3mm vinyl for all of the grills/great plastic parts, rods and then footwell lighting to finish i think.

What is hat cup holder?
where did you get it from?

I bought the armrest from ebay and it came with it. I believe that it was optional extra on original purchase. The dual cupholder fits perfectly into it. I might be able to take it out and grab the part number if you want? It's genuine Audi.

Btw Scott...thanks for the porshe bits. They look great!

Can you even get cups in it without knocking them? Im all elbows haha.

Also mate, where did you get the material from to do the boost gauge? I wouldnt mind wrapping mine.

I have to say that it can be quite awkward but serves a purpose on occasions.

The material....You can order it from Audi using the chassis number.

How much is it mate? Do they just supply you with a roll?

Per meter/roll I think.

They sent the wrong one first time around... They always get it wrong.

Not much. About £25/£30.

Gauge, pod and material all in for about £100.
