Right lads

them chrome window seals that always seem to go milky after the cheap TFR has eaten away at them over time,

Today i got into the mode of replacing them, well one of them to start with, Now i had to buy a whole seal unit as we broke the old one taking it off for the painting of the rear door, So a new one was fitted by taking the door card off, the window frame and it was a pain up the bum hole,

BUT after looking at the taken off bit and wondering how it was all put together i found out that the chrome part just literally clip's on with some great ease,

here are some photos of the old unit as i predicated on it,

I will be doing this job to a strip whilst on the car tomorrow and will take and upload more photos of the said action!

Peel back the old edge, bends real easy with fingers!

Flat nose screwdriver down the 1st bit to get it going,

then the rest will just peel off with ease, dont worry about bending it as its being replaced.

This may want to be put in the DIY section,

Right, Today got around to finishing the change over,

the photos will do all the talking,

first nip back the edge like so,

then poke a slip screw driver down it and get the lip off and peel,

take off fully and wipe off any crud thats got in behind it over the years,

new one will clip straight on, top lip to be put in place all along the top edge first,

then push down along the lower edge so that that part clips back on into place securlly, it will need a nice firm press, id advise using a flat bit of plastic or wood block as to evenly press it into place as you get only one shot at putting them on right as they will bended kink taking one off again, so yer, this is a one hit wonder,

how much did the new parts cost all in mate

thats not to bad is that trade ? also did you do the rear window suronds

its normal price from the main dealer, Iv not done the rear surrounds yet, I'm under the impression that the glass has to be taken out to be able to do them, Maybe a quick trip to an Glass fitter could assist in that part ? I'm sure we have a screen fitter here on the forum,

yes we do i just see him coment on a post some where ;-) i will get a prce for it on trade see if it make s a dent or not

to save loads of hassle after xmas think ill just wrap mine, will be cheaper and easier

i did look into that idea but felt it was not the right thing to do as i want to keep my B6 as original as it came out the factory and the chrome is a nice touch when all changed over, i am mixing my own waxing compound to protect the chrome from future TFR damage.

Nice work,

May have to get you to do mine??

not too far away lol

Is there a guide to how to get just to this stage?

I've heard it's door cards out, then drilling rivets? Or maybe that was the top strip? Either way, to remove the whole lot I'm drilling some holes in my car? :sadlike:

I'd like to remove all mine and get them painted black to match my roof.

I would LOVE to have the chrome strips around the windows on my avant, it looks like a Passat without it, and everyone is taping theirs black! Shame it's such a PITA to swap them over.

Looks like some pieces just pull off, but there's still rivets to drill all over the place. Worth it though, my chrome is looking pretty dire.

Fixing my zx-6r this weekend so once I have a spare set of wheels to get around on I'm free take the car to pieces and not worry about how I'm going to get to work. Then the dismantling can commence!

Cheers James.

Are the black ones different or are they just what it looks like without the chrome? I have milky chrome ones and would prefer black.

+1 i want to have the chrome as well!! :(

i think chrome looks better than black personally, but wouldn't it be just as easy to stick a vinyl wrap over them, and loads cheaper?

Serious question- why not just metal polish them? Can it not be done...?

Simply, No, there is a film on the chrome, you cant get it off without damaging your car doors paintwork, its just not worth it mate, I looked into it, new ones is the way to go with this one mate,

Hi! Are the pictures available yet? Thanks
