Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

Pretty evident isn't it! I had thought it might look a bit weedy on the S3 rims, but the massive tyres have helped it look mean still :)

Boost hose blew out due to excessive heat, 1500 miles use on the road without issue, 2 hours on a trackday shows how much more stress it puts on things:

Unfortunately, whilst working in the area fixing it up, we noticed this beasty on the manifold:

Ohps. Looks like I'll be trying out a V2 manifold very shortly!

At least V2 fits a little better... BUT..... only time will tell on how they fair.
Weld construction looked no different on the ones I have seen.
Its a shame you dont have an egt log of it, as that would have been good data to see what max it went to on the track day. (I have zeitronix which logs, and was always usefull to press the max tell tale at end of the race, track session etc

V2 I have here picture for you here Prawn..

1.2mm wall thickness max I think these are as a guess.
Welds not full penetration, and in the odd places they do penetrate, there's no back purge and they are coked welds.

S3Dave can tell us I expect what this will mean re weld strength etc etc

You'd have thaught the EGT's would have stayed fairly sensible given it was on actuator pressure though!

This is track use......... the materials colour tells the tale
12sec on my dyno and its glowing... You can imagine what Prawn in maximum attack on track use is like :p

I would have thought there maybe little hot spots and maybe slightly porous on the coked welds, they just want going over again with some rod to beef them up a bit, it looks like they have gone for them looking pretty rather than belts and braces, which is a shame as the hard work as definatley been done getting them to fit correctly, like bill said, road use these may be fine....track use a different ball game..

How come you're back to conventional wipers now? Looks like a good day out, shame about the failures.

Got to say, Andy's S40 looks properly cool now, really like it! (...and yours obviously! :p)

Single wiper was cool, but to be frank, it was utterly useless for the passenger in the rain. because it doesn't come down far enough, and it's parked right in their field of view, it's a nightmare.

Dad spent the whole way up to Rockingham moaning about how horrible it was, and i told him to deal with it.

I spent 5 minutes as passenger in it on saturday morning on the way to the circuit, and instantly realised Dad was right, it made me feel so ill looking out through half cleared screen half soaking wet blurr.

I liked the single wiper, but it feels MUCH safer in the rain when you can see properly!

LOVE how mean the tAngo3 looks! (<---see what i did there :p)

Cheers SuperK, I'm really liking how the tango wagon looks now too, Very happy with the image on S3 rims and fat track tyres :)

Dave, you are about to get a PM ;)

I like it Reesy, High miles and proud in this camp! It'll almost be a shame when it gets a new engine, as the miracle engine magic will be lost. I'm so proud of what the car is capable of given it's hard and long life

that's a highly sensible option folks, you're right, I'm just unsure at the moment.....

It smokes a LOT after it's been idling due to valve stem seals, and on track on saturday it was breathing fairly heavily through the catch can.....

Makes me wonder if it's worth throwing rods in this one, or just building up a new lump alongside this one to drop in when the time comes.

Well if you have the space, time, and money to build up a 2nd block i'd go for that ;)

It will need it... Its done 200k.

My old 195k AEB had a healthy bore lip, and scored/scuffed pistons. Certainly not in any way sensible to strip an engine down to that level, and NOT fix it properly, especially if your aiming for a reliable track engine running >300hp from 1.8L!

Well those are my thoughts really kev, if I could pick up some ultra cheap rods, as I had thought I'd managed to, then I'd have just thrown them in and left the rest untouched, but as that's now not an option, I think picking up a lower mileage AGU and rebuilding with new rods, shells, Rings, honed bores, and a rebuilt head is the way forward.

Where did you guys all get your WMI kits from? I'm looking for a decent price on the kit with the 25L tank preferably.

Just need to wait to hear back from XS power about a manifold....

eBay seller xenonlv

He did me a 3% discount on my kit and it cost £280 for a brand new AEM progressive kit with everything you need. The bottle I have is only 4L but I think you have to buy the bigger bottle seperately but you can ask the seller.

you see that's the problem Westy, I was talking to nando last night (Moredoor) and he said on his mk2 golf he used to use 1.5L of Water/meth on a single lap of the Ring. your 4ltr tank would mean that I couldn't do 3 back to back laps of the Ring. We've only ever done 2-3 back to back laps during TF before, but I'd be worried on a 3rd lap around that it could run out at any second.

if I get the 25L tank like this:

aem%20meth%205gal.png

I reckon that tank would sit perfectly on the flat to the left hand side of teh boot floor above the exhaust, i'd mount it on spacers so the exhaust heat didn't radiate up into the tank, and mount the pump power down either behind the drivers seat, or in the spare wheel well depending on how close it needs to be. the filler neck would also sit perfectly by the opening of the bootlid too :)

I've not used mine in anger yet so I dont know how long it'll last. I'm also only using the smallest nozzle which doesn't allow much mixture out. you'll definitely need the biggest tank you can get.

The way I see it, 3 laps of the Ring before having to top up the bottle sounds like a PROPER pain in the ****, having to carry Meth around in germany which if frowned upon anyway, carrying large quantities of meth on the ferry is also not allowed. I don't have to keep a 25l tank full either, could just have 2-3 gallons in it for normal use, but it'd be nice to bring it with 25L at the start of a trackday and not have to fill it up again.

As a guideline, 1.5 litres of fluid per lap of the Ring equates to roughly 1/8th of a litre per mile covered.

At Rockingham we did 160 miles on track in the day, so similar driving conditions, and that'd equate to 20 litres of WM, so the 25L tank sounds perfect I'd say. Brim it before leaving, and it should last all day. take a gallon along as a spare.

I've measured it up and the big tank fits perfectly on the LHS too, and there SHOULD be room in the wheel well for the pump bottom left, whilst still allowing a full size wheel to sit in there. we'll see!

ahh.

fresh motor, balanced etc
1900cc becons? :p

Awesome :beerchug:

Do you do interest free credit? Buy now pay later? or anything along similar lines? 2022 is looking good to start repayments

Hmmmmmmmm, The prices of these kits are confusing me.....

1 gallon kit is £295 ish

1 gallon tank alone is around £40

5 gallon tank alone is around £80, so you'd expect the 5 gallon kit to be about £40 more than the 1 gallon kit, but it's not.

the 5 gallon kit is about £380, so it's as if you're paying for both tanks!

Makes no sense, and makes me sad :(

Yep, it's dirty money making tricks.

Can't you buy the kit with no tank and get the tank separatly?

<tuffty/>

yea I could do PT, but then I'd be stung once on postage from latvia, and once in postage for the tank from the states!

can't win either way i don't think. can't see a way to make it come in under £380 :(

Scrap that, sound idea Tufty! Found the tank for £80 shipped from the USA, and the kit with no tank from latvia for £261 :) Might contact latvia man and see if he can match that and send a 5 gallon kit for £340.

Just noticed on another site too, it's 5 US gallons again, so only 19 litres. I DEFINITELY want the bigger tank now, 19L will be OK, but I wouldn't want smaller!

I'll drop him a line nearer the time when we've actually got the money to spend right away, cheers Westicles :)

prawn are you running any wheels spacers on those wheels seem to stick out more than mine lol

steve

finally spotted you yesterday Prawn

on the viables roundabout, car looks good mate

OH really? thanks :)

Early morning I assume? Think that was the only time I took it out yesterday, about 8am?
