Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

haha, Sorry superK :p we collect wheels and tyres, can never have too many! We're pretty much stocked up for this year I think

Currently we have:

4 Oz superturismo's with Pirelli P-zero Asymetrico tyres - fitted as road wheels

4 Rota G-force wheels with Federal RS-R track tyres - 2mm left so still road legal

4 Leon Cupra Starfish wheels with Pirelli P-zero Corsa track tyres: tyres only got one airfield day left in them then scrap.

4 S3 Avus rims with scrubbed A048R tyres, just below legal limit, so a good 2-3 trackdays to be had from these

4 TT 6 spokes currently on the daily

4 B6 S4 Avus reps in need of tyres

4 almost new Yoko A048R tyres ready to go on the Rotas when the RS-R's wear out, all road legal for a Ring trip

4 Ex clio cup 200/620 slicks

4 Ex AMD touring car 235/610 slicks
Could do with one more set of 17'' lightweight rims really, as I don't have free access to a tyre machine to keep swapping things around.

Ideally, I'd like it to stay on some nice rims for road use so it looks cool, but at the same time, the nicer rims are lighter, so would be best off used on trackdays!

Prawn takes wheel whores to another level......

You've missed some 48s out. You have so many you don't know how many.

It MUST be a race car now, it has a white nylon gear knob!

You need an extension on that bad boy to bring it closer to the wheel :p

9a03020b.jpg

Nah man, I've got a plan for that :) Extension will lengthen the throw as well, which is bad. Going to raise the shifter up, and cut the stick down.

Short shift it is then. Its what i did last night, closer to the wheel and still shorter throw than standard was. You`re lucky you can raise the whole thing, Everything is sunken into the tunnel on the A4 :(

as standard mine's mounted from under neath through the tunnel, I changed to a later shifter type, and moved it inside so the cables run through a hole in the bulkhead

Yeah i wouldnt have that option with gearbox being mounted other way and its run on linkages not cables.

Also the added weight on the top of the lever has made it shift nicer and feel more precise. I now see why people go on about weighted knobs.

Mr Prawn here are some pics of what I was talking to you about at Ace, I'll be doing something like this to my mk4 track toy.

That looks dead Smart Nando, really like that.

Had an absolutely CRACKING day at Rockingham yesterday!

Any prizes for guessing what happened?

Boost hose blew out due to excessive heat, 1500 miles use on the road without issue, 2 hours on a trackday shows how much more stress it puts on things:

Unfortunately, whilst working in the area fixing it up, we noticed this beasty on the manifold:

Ohps. Looks like I'll be trying out a V2 manifold very shortly!

Wow! That's some split in the hose! Also I can't believe that mani crack. You are the first person to put one of these manis through it's paces so we don't know for sure that a V2 will last too much longer either! I know welly ran his for a while but we know that track days are a lot different to any hard road use.

remember what we said about temps... and "anything" which is in sight of the hot bits will melt (my personal experience) they will melt/fail

the colours of the collector and "odd" section of pipe look muchos hot..
high egt's when used on track

which is inevitable

hope v2 works out more reliable
you will be the official tester given your track use

strange how the collector and that one little section are different colours isn't it? Was on actuator pressure most of the day too!

Ah well, V2 manifold and WMI to come soon!

have just skimmed through this whole build alot of effort gone in a like it im building something similar at the moment my A3 is my daily so will only have a half cage but all the other trimmings :D

might i ask what resistor ratings you used on all the airbags you removed i was gonna use a 501 bulb but thought i would see if someone knows first lol

steve

I didn't use resistors mate, I removed EVERYTHING totally including the control unit and most of the wiring.

Light is removed on the cluster, as you can't code it out on my older car.

On newer ME7.5 cars I believe you can actually code out airbags and / ABS if you so desire on the CANBUS.

Be good to see some pics of yours at some point!

Any prizes for guessing what happened?

When I saw this I was thinking NOOOOO not the rods!!!! Happy it wasn't!

As for why the manifold cracking where it did your pic tells the story really, the k04 turbo turbine housing is a bit on the small side so heat will start to build up in that area and for track use you may need to look at a cast or steam pipe manifold. WMI and maybe lower AFR's will help keep that hot spot under control.

It would actually help if they had welded the fkn thing properly, to me that looks as if they have fused that part in with no rod....as you can see it slightly con-caving...
I think you are going to need something beefier like the frankenturbo manni perhaps?

ok cheers prawn lol ill get pics up of mine very soon ! promise :) and yes the manifold does look fused lack of rod is a ***** maybe its due to the rise in metal prices  lol

is it a xs power ??

ah yes, JBS-ko4 file name, makes sense :)

Will contact XS today when Welly gets back to me, and see what can be done.

I want to stick with the XS manifolds because I think they're great, just hope the V2 is better made.

Prawny, I know I text you but I thought I'd ask the question here too as it might be good info.

I was wondering if you notice any driving difference between all your sets of wheels as the OZ Superturismos and the Team Dynamic wheels are a good 3kg per wheel lighter then a genuine audi 17" wheel like the S3 Avus?

I'm looking at buying either a set of 17" 7J OZ Super Ts or 17" 7J set of Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2 and these would give me a huge weight difference to my current 18" 8J S4 wheels.

Don't get 7J westy, it's gay. they will look lost on your S3 arches, and 225 tyres will be properly over-tiring the rims. I ran 7J with my leon starfish wheels and they're just not wide enough really.

both the wheels you mention are avail in 8j, my superT's are 8J, and TD PR1.2's are available in 8J if you go direct to Rimstock motorsport division, you can also get them in any offset you want, with the correct centre bore so no need for spigot rings. price last time I enquired was £100 per wheel + VAT, so great value as well!

You do notice a difference for sure, it feels more lively and nimble on the lighter wheels, and the suspension seems to cope much better too, it's a better ride.

Torque steer is also reduced, not that you'd suffer from it anyway.

Just don't buy 7J! it's gay.

Only reason I was looking at 7J was because there was a set local to me going for £250 with tyres. I'm after a bargain if I can get it. Would 7J not look ok with spacers, also I would run 205 tyres and not 225.

Why would you want to go down to a 205? No point in getting lighter wheels and decent tyres if you're going down on size so backwards on grip in that front. Stick with 225's at least! we want to try 235/40's next!

A4 TQS came from the factory with 225/45's on a 7J rim, they fit fine.

They fit fine Kev yes, but they're on the upper limit of a 7J rim, with the tyre being almost 9'' wide and the rim only 7'', it's very much like a baloon, and they can roll about a bit. Coupled with the fact that track tyres tend to be 10-15mm wider than an equivalent size road tyre, and i think a 225 section trackday tyre will be **** on a 7J rim. my 225 yokos on 7.5J S3 rims are fairly baloon like already.

they would fit for sure, but it's not ideal IMO

The tread might be 9" wide, but the sealing bead is always inset.

I agree that 7.5's would be better though.

8's IMO need a 235, 225's always seem to look a bit stretched on an 8, and i properly hate that look. Sidewalls should be flat, not curving inwards!

Fair point on the track tyres, i knew proper slicks were wider, didnt realise the semi-slicks were too.

225s on an 8 would be fine, they dont look stretched at all. 225s on a 9 barely have a stretch. Obviously its there and visable but its very minimal tbh. I was looking at 9s with a 225 tyre but expected a huge stretch so was plesantly surprised when i saw in person it was so small.

Depends on your definition tbh.

I like my tyre sidewall sitting nice and square, and the rim protector tucked down and protecting the rim.

225 on an 8 ends up looking like this:

http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/1271315/WP_000209.jpg

With the rim protector bent back from the rim edge leaving that huge splayed gap, and the tyre sidewall sloping inwards.

Does vary a bit from tyre to tyre ofcourse.

Be very interesting to hear how you get on with it Bill. I've e-mailled XS to discuss getting a v2 manifold to put it through it's paces! waiting to hear back them.

Quite happy with how it looks on the S3 rims too (225 track tyres on 7.5J rims)
