Hi guys. Please see eBay item number 170801173000. It's an 05 originally Red but has a full inside and out 2011 s3 conversion. Do you think it's worth the money? I'm going to look at it tomorrow. Many thanks guys

I highly doubt it will have had a full strip and respray? Under the bonnet/floors may still be red (Probably why an engine shot hasn't been included). This would put me off to be honest. Take a look at an original, unmolested A3 and then put your take on it. For the same mileage you could get a genuine S3 for a touch over the asking price.

Stolen /recovered says it all to me.

I know only too well what can happen after a car has been stolen and before it is recovered!

There's lots of very nice 3.2's out there, genuine ones too, keep looking is my opinion.

Bare in mind....insuring a stock V6 A3 is expensive enough. One with numerous mods like this? Might be worth looking into it before parting with any cash.

Just give you an idea I sold my 2007 a3 s line dsg 2.0T 57 reg 48k factory white 2011 s3 replica fully loaded with sat nav, bose, two tone leather ect ect for just under 11k so I think it's expensive for age, mileage and it's been sprayed a different colour.

It does look well done, but it's only worth what you're willing to pay. At the end of the day it's a 9 year old v6, stolen recovered, and probably worth 4k. So it's the conversion that you're paying for. You certainly couldn't do it yourself for that money, so if that's what your after then maybe it's worth it.

Can get the conversion done easily for less than 6k, cost me around 3k for everything for mine, and sold my old bits on for like 2k so only cost me 1k all done lol

By all means, view it and report back, but don't be tempted to buy there and then!

Stolen/Recovered puts me off, not only that a full respray? Firstly one thing about full resprays which i dont like is the workman ship and bodge jobs under neath the body panels.

I had a car fully resprayed stripped everything off, I can tell you its expensive and messy. I remember assisting with the stripping and everything. To do the job properly you need alot of money and skill. most body shops dont use the oem bolts etc end up loosing fixings etc etc.

My respray went well but thats because i was there gathering all the fixings and keeping a close eye on the progress...Alot of these conversions are just quickly patched up with underlying issues which would creap up.

If the car was 6-7k i would maybe take the risk because if it turned out to be a lemon it has valuable parts you can sell to make up your losses.....But at 9k i wouldn't touch it personally no matter how attractive it looks.

I agree but I bet it doesn't look as good in the flesh.

Another thing, as it's an 05, it is prone to cam chain stretch, before I paid money for an 05 3.2 , I'd want to see VCDS prove the chain is ok.

Make sure there's no lumpy idle and that you can hold the revs easily at 2k.

I haven't got lumpy idle or anything like that, although I do have the 2k hesitation which needs sorting. How can you use vcd's to check if the chains stretched? And how long would it take someone to check?

Dont even consider it would be my advise. The 3.2 is arguably the best of the A3's to drive. Certainly better than a std S3 but as the last ones made get older i would be very careful what i bought because they can go wrong big time. Most main dealers will not have experience of how to fix them. Parts are ****** expensive (£700 for a timing chain tensioner) !! Audi refuse to except there is a problem with the 2k hesitation and if your timing chain goes you might be better to right an early car off rather than repair it. Brilliant when they work and a nightmare when they dont. Anything like the one on ebay that has been messed about or dose'nt have a warranty or perfect service history ?...walk away.

TBH you cant. There is a setting in blocks that could read chain stretch but i remember Sarah had readings of -8 which was as bad as it gets but she had no running problems at all in fact her readings got better with an oil change. Have you had the ECU update for pre 06 cars ? that will help, the hesitation is overfueling at 2k and needs a software fix. Chains will show up on a vcds scan as Cam set point not reached.

There is a thread or 2 on the subject where instructions for vag-com were posted. As Paddy said, Sarah has this knowledge, drop her a PM, shes helped me with a few things, great gal!

I do believe it's someone who works as an Audi Mechanic.. because who else would spend all that money to get it to look exactly like an S3, but deep inside you know its a fake? If I was you, I'd look at

2008 AUDI S3 2.0T FSI QUATTRO , RED , BLACK LEATHER , 18" ALLOYS , 261 BHP | eBay

Less miles and a proper S3 (so you won't feel like a fool when one pulls next to you at the lights). I always think that when a car has been changed like this, it could be a unrecorded crashed car.. be careful!

And you can get proper S3's remapped :)

IMO the whole replica thing is a bit naff anyway but the 3.2 is a desirable (and fairly rare in relative terms) car in its own right, so
I dont see why you would make a replica out of it.?
Even as a rebuild, why not just put the effort and money into making it look like a really nice 3.2?

Paul

Its still a 3.2 V6 24v so i dont think he'd feel like a fool in that respect.

Agreed!

Odd choice making a 3.2 an S3 replica.

Stolen/recovered raises an alarm though, you can't be sure what happened between the two (might have just been parked round the corner for a few days, might have been thrashed half way across Europe). Without getting the car VERY thoroughly checked over, you won't know the quality of the build either.

I'd say leave it be, and either pick up a 3.2 and do the conversion yourself, or just go out and find an S3.

A lot of people would say the 3.2 is the best engine and should have been in the S3 anyway. The new v6 in the S5 is also a peach and should have been in the S3. The 'S3 has the best looks. I can understand why someone might build a hybrid, Sarah's is smashing.

The v6 is a amazing sounding engine and a cracking car but if your looking for the looks of a s3 then I would buy the s3 as to take the chance of getting a well done conversion is a big risk.

I really don't care what engine is in it.. at the end of the day it's not an S3.. it's a FAKE.

And that's their choice.. but i'd put money on it that the majority wouldn't own one.

If you owned one you would understand what its all about.

Owning a fake S3? I'm not doubting that the 3.2 v6 is a good engine.. just wouldn't have a replica!

What determines a replica though?

The S3 badges?

The bumpers, skirts or wheels?

Theres plenty on here that have a mix or both or either!

And they look good.

Exactly Wez an S3 is only a A3 with a bolt on body kit. What dose matty think about s-line spoilers on sport models ?
Take the badge off that 3.2 and its a A3 with a body kit. To me a replica is a fibreglass Lambo with a MR2 lump :)

If you want an S Line, buy an S Line. If you want an S3, buy an S3. Don't kid yourself your cars something it's not. Mines as much of an S3 as the car in question... mine isn't one either!

so why has yours got S3 peddles ?

TBH mate if you dont like people moding their cars with S-line spoilers or S-line bumpers or putting 09 defusers on 05 cars then you are on the wrong forum.
Audi moded the A3 2.0tfsi to an S3 so you can hardley criticise others for doing the same.. You spend your hard earned cash on a car you buy the right to do what you want to it. It may not be to your liking but then it has nothing to do with you either.
You go round disliking posts because other people have an opinion you aint going to make many friends here .

So what is the definition of car modding to you?

lol, so what if some of us choose to alter some of the parts on our cars for what we feel is an improvement. I did it not to make a cheap S3 but because I love the look of the S3 body. For me I have the best of both, a V6 and a more agressive looking car.

Not everyone can afford an S3 etc and all on here take pride in their cars they drive. Its nice to hear opinons on the work we have done on them but sadly not from someone who can only add negative comments yet chooses to use higher models parts himself.

I never said that small modifications wasn't a problem? Not sure where you got that from! ;)

Yes I have added the S3 pedals to my car. I only put these on because I thought it looked better and it doesn't look like a 'wannabe' S3 - If it did, I wouldn't of put them on.

In relation to these fake S3's.. I do think a lot of the time I am on the wrong forum - and it's been said before. Some users on here think they are god's gift because they've managed to afford a 5 year old A3 with an Audi badge on it.. Big deal, everyone can - Get over yourself!

My opinion hasn't changed. :)

I find myself in an uncomfortable middle ground between the rather polar views in this thread.

I think, for me anyway, it just comes down to having S3 badges on it. Fair play putting the body kit on (I know a LOT of people have put S-Line bodykit on Sports - making them the same as any s-line - and S3 kits on any derivative) and even swapping the interior out, but actually claiming it's an S3 is where I'd draw the line. I know the 3.2 is a great engine, and I often wish the S3 had the pick-up of an n/a V6, but it's not an S3.

Sarah, your car is gorgeous, but I've never heard you claim it was an S3 (why would you). I think that's the bottom line for me. Make/mod it as you like, but don't claim it's something it's not!

Maybe people just need to realise that everyone can have their own opinion, and that's all this is about - personal preference. So stop trying to pretend that your opinion counts for more than anyone else's, and just be content voicing your own view (I'm sure if you had the time, and inclination, you could find at least 10 threads where I've not followed that advice... "oops").

I think the issue is whether other bits have been used to make the car look like an improved version of itself, or to make a deliberate replica of something else.

Thank you and you are right, I never have or ever would. If you look at my car it has NO S3 badges on as I know its not an S3 and dont want it to be, I just like the more aggressive look of the S3. My car retains all its original 3.2 and S Line bages and I even modded the grill to accommodate them.

I like the S3 and could afford one if I wanted one (well could have when in the UK lol, over here they are stupid money!) but I chose the V6 as I just loved the engine. Its each to his own and doesnt mean any derivative is better or worse than another. Its what you want or can afford from a car.

Each to his/her own I say. I do love seeing all the mods members have lovingly done.

lol only you can decide that although a few may have their own opinions. As far as and I quote... 'Some users on here think they are god's gift because they've managed to afford a 5 year old A3 with an Audi badge on it..' .... I really dont agree with you here. Alot who have a 5 year old A3 as you say are probably chuffed to bits to have one. ok, they are more affordable now than a few years ago but ive not met any with that outlook.

You will note i said "Take the badge off that 3.2 and its a A3 with a body kit" ie, take the S3 badge off and i dont see a problem.
Sarah has built arguably the ultimate A3, maybe even the S3 Audi should have built given Audi's choice of rather tame std S3 engine over the V6 with its instant flexible , usable power .... S3 owners like me and Paul and Warren all spent £30k + on a new car and had to take it straight to the nearest Revo dealer and spend another £600 getting it put right..that should tell you something about Audi's choice of set up.. In 265bhp mode i still think the V6 is a much more usable fun engine. Hats of to anyone that can improve on Audi's offerings and thats what Sarah has done :)
