So everyone has a boot right? Lol anyways the button to unlock the boot is quite useless.. Is there any sort of mod that when you press the unlock boot button from the key the boot actually opens up (rises) like mercs etc rather than just unlocking where you have to press and lift?

Thanks

Not on the A3. There is the option on more upmarket Audis but not the A3.

I agree with you 100% it serves no purpose if you still have to lift the lid up. Lol

The idea is that you can un-lock the boot/tailgate without having to un-lock the whole car - security and all that. Similar to be able to choose whether you open just the drivers door or all doors when you press the normal unlock button.

I have just done a search on the internet and come up with this , so it looks like it can be done.

Automatic Boot Opening.

i was thinking about this mod for a while, but can't decide which size springs to order.

The article in my post suggest a size and supplier.

When Audi fit it as standard it is electrically operated rather than by springs and I assume has it own button on the remote.

On the proper Audi factory option pressing the button unlocks the tailgate and releases the catch so it opens. There is also a button in the tailgate to electrically close it as well. I can understand this on something like a Q5 or Q7 as I'm sure some drivers, ladies in particular, may not be able to reach the tailgate when it is in the open position inorder to close it.

I'm sure it could be done, perhaps using parts from say an A4 Avant but it sounds like quite an expensive modification.

The best solutions to problems are always the simplest, and I like the idea of the additional springs, as long as they dont mess the strut up in any way.

Really like this idea.....anyone actually done it already or tried it ? I see there was another thread about this last year, but it petered out !

Where's boydie he was the guinea pig on the us style cup holders lol maybe he will come to the rescue again. Super boydie

that has only item number not the dimensions. i've searched and when you go to that web you get different kind of springs. i think i will order some springs when i find the ones i think would work. then will have a little play.

The Bearing Boys website list the springs 31135 mentioned in the article I posted a link to as R16x51. Their website is Bearings, Ball & SKF Bearings, Safety Boots, Castors, Wedge & V Belts
If you search for Springs and choose the heavy duty die springs (red) and go down the list to R16x51 it gives all the dimensions and prices.

I've just been out to measure the point on the existing struts where the tailgate begins to rise by itself on my SportBack, and it is approx 100mm from fully closed ( from the bottom mounting ), which means I am not convinced R16x51's will do the job.

Being only 51mm long, i dont think they will provide enough impetus to get the tailgate high enough up the guide for it to then raise the rest of the way under its own steam ?

Mind you, they aren't expensive so it may be worth just trying in case I am wrong...........

Sorry to drag this one up....did anybody get something working with the springs on a hatchback? Thanks!
