I'll be fitting a new thermostat tomorrow night as well as giving a general service, so will report back on temp gauge and mpg readings (currently temp is just over or at 70, and trip calc mpg is 40.2mpg).
Haynes reckons the thermostat is a tricky job with intake manifold and alternator removal, but I've read on forums that people have managed to do it with just removing the alternator, or even removing neither.
