Afternoon All,

I have been pondering on getting a new car for a few months now, I have been bouncing between a Range Rover Sport new shape 3.0tdv6 or the RS3. The reason being these two cars is quite straight forward, the missus wants me to get something I will drive a little more sensible than my current S3 so the RR sport, which are very nice it must be said. But I keep finding myself looking through the Audi website at the RS3, Daytona grey...mmmmm I find myself driving the S3 a little crazy as everyone wants to have a go at it, I had a Porky 911 before and no one ever really tried it on as they just knew it was quick, so I drove it like a hearse, would I get the same in the RS3, as I do want to have a more chilled drive.
I know you will all say RS3 as this is Audi Sport Net, but if you had the choice for all round praticality, snob value, residuals etc what would you go for if you didn't have your Audi hat on!

I know what you are saying, I had (proper) Rangie a couple of years ago and it was lovely jumping in it and having a nice chilled out drive, however it cost me a fortune in fuel and a shed load of depreciation! If it were me I would be hard pushed not to go for the RS:) I tend to drive my S3 like a bat out of hell but recently I have been trying to kerb it a bit as I know there will be a copper around the corner with three or six points for me:)
 
Thats just it Lensey, its hard to use the power these days anyway, and I never arrive anywhere chilled out, where as when I drive mothers FFRR supercharged i just roll around in it, in no rush to get anywhere just plod! I am looking at cars in the region of £45k which will get me a 6 month old RRsport HSE low miles for the same price as the RS3. The fuel thing is a pain, but I was loaned one from the dealer the other week for a day and the 3.0tdv6 returned around 30mpg around town where as the S3 is about 24 so fuel is ok.
 
Slam the range rover and by the supercharged version. Map it to high heaven. then boom best of both worlds. probably weighs about the same as an RS3 anyway ;)
 
To be honest the v6 has enough poke for something that size, but the supercharged does sound great

I do like the Rangie Sport but what about A8 3.0tdi or 4.2tdi?
 
30mpg is good, I didn't realise the Sports were that good, sounds like you've made your mind up:)
 
Can't go for an A8 or anything like that as I have a springer and need a boot, hence the reason I got rid of the 911. If you are good you can get 30mpg more realistically its going to be around 25ish as I don't do many motorway miles. But looking at the duty increase and the price of fuel I will be using a peddle bike soon!!!!
 
audi upgrades
Im thinking of doing the same sort of thing myself and ive narrowed it down to the following cars.
Range rover evoque 2.0 petrol dynamic
Rangerover sport supercharged
Rangerover sport 3.6 TDV8
Audi Q5 3.0 TDI
BMW X5 4.4 V8

i dont do many miles a year and could do with a 4x4 as my parents are often cut off in winter as they live out in the sticks, im dwinging torwards an evoque coupe at the moment as its the best all rounder
 
Definitley Range Rover. So much more for your money, its pretty fast, very comfortable and very high status.
 
Well no ones going to pull up at the lights and thing hmmm RS3 i will leave that alone because no one will ever know its not a 1.4tdi SB...so forget the porker syndrome :)
Residuals on any £40k+ car are not going to be good but a Rangey will be better than most. Down side is it will be plagued with electrical problems so you need a spare car and despite being called a sport..its not sporty unless you think 20 Rothmans, 10 pints of bitter and a game of darts is Sport.
 
Why not hold on till later in the year and buy an rs4? Room, luxury, and pace, but maybe not great mpg. But they do hold onto their value well.
 
All great points, I went to have a look at the Evoque, 5 door though, I really liked it and like you said a great all round motor so that is still on the list but I think £40k for a top of the range one is far to much, so may wait till they come down. have admit the v6 i tried had plenty of ooomph and would get you out of most situations. Looked at the TDV8 RR sport, but then saw the facelift v6 which replaced the V8 and I have to admit its miles above the V8 in quality, they really raised the bar with the facelift. At the end of the day you get a lot of car for your money as new they are £60k so residuals are pretty good because someone else has taken the hit hence why I can afford the monthly payments.
But that RS3 is itching and needs scratching.......
 
I did think about an RS3 aswell but ruled it out with ground clearence as my S3 sometimes catches, plus the boot wont be big enough for my 2 dogs. So that lead me to think of Range rovers
 
i could real off loads of cars ive just found a nissan gtr black edition for 40k if i had the money that would be me ! the gtr is fast as feck seen a few drag races online and th gtr pee's all over a 458 italia
 
There's a fully loaded Daytona grey rs3 on autotrader for 42 k which isn't a bad price for the spec it has..

Yea seen that one on Auto trader but its a private so won't be able to finance. There are a few on Audis website so quite easy to come by now. What was your thoughts on it Abyss as you had one, I love to the DSG i had it in my R32 a few years back so that wont put me off like it did you.
 
Range rovers are nice but the sport doesn't do it for me.
has to be a proper one which is never going to handle at 3 tonnes.
they need to be supercharged for an entertaining drive.
cant compare an rs3 to a rangie, totally different beasts.
give me handling very time. Rs3 it is.
new rs4 avant out soon also.
 
how about an s4 avant?

gtr's are fantastic value until you research the running costs, strict servicing schedule and replacememt part costs....
 
I had the RR SC when it first came out. It was fun for awhile. It didn't have paddle shifters and shifting using the knob was a PITA. It has so much lag at WOT when using the regular drive mode but using the "stick" was decreasingly fun. Then I noticed everyone driving the RR was a soccer mom and it just became a mom's car. The RR forums are boring and the mods are limited. I wanted that go cart feel again and went to audi and have never looked back. If I had the choice ... RS3 anyday of the week
 
A few of you have mentioned a Nissan Gtr, where in there do I put my two springer spaniels after they have jumped in a river and through every muddy puddle, I had a 911 before the dogs and got rid due to the dogs so can't have a Sports coupe, it has to be a 3/5 door with a boot. Plus as well I want something that is new or 6 months old as I want the piece of mind of the warranty.
 
Why not idulge yourself and buy the RS3, whack a good deposit down, have it on 24 months PCP but sell it after 12 months, the residuals are good so repayments low, done this a few times in the past and the loss in depreciation was minimal as long as you don't count the monthly PCP payments and just factor these in as fun rental!!. Audi will always want good quality PX cars that are nearly new for the forecourt and they market them at close to new prices so good for negotiation.

I'd run it for 12 months to scratch the itch then look at it again in 12 months time - phrase cake and eat it comes to mind.

I do like the RR sport but I also think that itch needs scratching otherwise false economy, personally I'd buy another Porker and run a small van or old estate for the dogs !!
 
if you need space for dogs even the RS3 sounds a bit too small.a GTR boots probably bigger, or at least close. Why not try a few Sporty estates. RS4 or RS6 avants. Rapid and loads of space.
 
Spin you talk a lot of sense, I may look into what the amount maybe, I don't really want to put down anymore than 5k, paying for a wedding in May so 30K is going there!!! I think with only 5k it would make the monthly payments to big to stomach. Not really interested in the big boys RS toys as the fuel economy on them is horrible and sadly that is something I have to look at although I don't do the mileage I can't stomach giving the government anything more than I have too!!! And the Q7 is just dog ugly IMHO, look like dumbo with those wing mirrors.
Talked about it with the missus and she really wants me to get the RR Sport. Well lets get the wedding paid for then I can look at this more seriously, but you guys are a great help.
 
I'd be more inclined to go down the RS3 route purely for exclusivity. I've seen two so far and they've been out for a fair few months, plus that 5 cylinder sounds bbeeaauutiful (so glad they're coming back). I do understand what you mean about just cruising and having a chilling drive in a range in comparison to driving an S3 around. But what you have to remember is you could have a chilling drive in either of the two if you wanted to, its just that the S3 eggs you on that little bit more being what it is, whereas you know you can't hammer a range around so why bother. Another thing i'd say, it doesnt matter what you drive, ull always get someone stuck up ur a**e, hammering it off a line next to u, undercutting etc etc. There are people who just drive like that on the road regardless of what your driving, its just how u choose to react to it. Having two dogs in the back of the RS3 is enough to make me cry with my OCD though. Can't imagine how that would be to clean. The range will definately be the better option for taking your dog around places.

Just another suggestion, Volvo estate with a 5 cylinder turbo? or even a D5? You have AWD available on some models too.
 
The allroad is a good shout or an A6 avant. IMO the Sportback boot just isn't big enough for 1 dog never mind 2
 
I hear you, but the A6 or Volvo just don't have that oooomph factor the Range or the RS3 has, I sound like a bit of a **** but I do like the snob factor of the rangy and the rare factor of the RS3. My dogs are only little things so plenty of room for them in the S3 at present so SB would be fine, the range rover on the other hand they will think its a new room in the house! I laughed at the OCD thing, the worst thing it their noses up against the window, I have the boot tidy thing to stop the carpets getting ruined, sadly with two dogs you can't be too precious about the boot of the car lol
 
maybe thats something else to think about then Lucas - how easy the boot will be to keep clean if you don't want too much depreciation when it comes time to sell. if the RS3 is going to be wrecked by the dogs, but the RR will be easier to keep tidy it could be something else that pushes you in that direction.
 
Yes very true but i must admit my S3 is spotless only because I wipe and clean it if they have been out for a walk where we have had to put them in the boot, otherwise they are only in there say once a week, so its not as if they are always in there its just I have to have the option on the car I choose.

Surely it would be better to have something that you can drive sedately but also know that when you feel like it you can put your foot down and get that big grin on your face!
 
Yea I kinda am leaning towards the RS3 its just talking the missus into it as she thinks I will drive it like a loon!! RS6 to juicy for my ******.
