Audi new owner - Advice needed

Hello all,

Im new to this forum and also new to Audi, I have currently just purchased a 2011 Audi A3 Black Edition and I'm after some help regarding the below:

1) I am looking to upgrade the head unit in my car and really wanting to go with the RNS-E. My car currently has bluetooth which is running through the driver information system which is obviously separate from my current head unit and I don't want to loose this function. I have had a price off a chap on ebay for a RNS-E fitted and coded with a GPS module hidden in the dash for £999.99. The problem here is the cost and I will need to complete a very long drive to get to there garage. Can anyone advise of anyone selling one or know any contacts? Would it be worth buying one and getting someone to code it all in / fit? I'm pretty handy at fitting things myself so would give this ago. Just for info I currently have installed the double din Concert head unit. Would it also be worth considering a aftermarket head unit, if so would the bluetooth still work and also the steering wheel functions. Further advise on aftermarket head units will be grateful to.

2) I'm also looking for a S3 full gear nob and gator (manual) including DIY guide

3) S3 metal pedal set (manual) including DIY guide, do these just fit like the rubber ones apart from the accelerator pedal

4) Any other nice touches any of you can recommend?

Just for info I live in the Lancashire area and willing to travel.

Hi & welcome Jimmy,

You can get the latest RNS-E fitted for much cheaper than that - check other Bay prices, being aware that many are cheap for a reason. Others on here can get legit units & fit them - they'll be around soon & will reply.
There are also comprehensive guides on the forum showing how to install them, as they're such a popular mod. Just do a search.

Other mods for your new car? Lots really - more power / lighting tweaks... For ideas, keep an eye out on the for sale thread at the top of the 8P threads page to get ideas for what people are doing / selling. There's all sorts.

Welcome to the forum fella.
Good choice about the RNS-e although some may talk you out of it as prefer after market for better functions. (Ash may be along soon, lol).
you will not lose the function of your Bluetooth, if anything you will gain, as you will be able to get all your contacts, see missed, dialled calls, make calls all from the RNS-e.
It is pretty straightforward to install the unit and put the gps on top of the glove box, or I am sure there is someone here near you that will fit and code for a few beer tokens! :)
A problem that you will occur though is the radio reception as it uses a different antenna module than the concert, symphony etc. You will get reception but may find it cuts out easily, so ideally you would want to upgrade, but the bad part is it can cost a couple hundred.

There are a few people who can do this for you, the one nearest is probably Jonny (jb0o) who is in Hartlepool, or Nigel (NHN), he is in the south but does travel. Two great guys and you will not be disappointed.

Was hoping that I could get the RNS-E fitted cheaper than that. Just want to get one off a trusted party and know that it will be fully working in every way it should be. I'm 99.9% sure I will prob be able to do the install myself but it will obviously require coding.

I know people will have mixed views on the RNE-E, I just love the look of it installed. Not really seen any aftermarket ones that look as good! So will the RNS-E be able to view my contacts, missed calls, dialled etc. as standard as I'm sure i read somewhere that bluetooth was an optional extra if you want it to run through the RNS-E and if so you had to buy some extra bluetooth bits?

Install / code sounds like a plan with payment of quite a few beer tokens! ;-)

Im a bit concerned about the radio reception you have mentioned. When you say upgrade do you mean that it is quite costly as it will require the small standard "bee sting" antenna which cubs installed if factory installed? So will it not just use the antenna i already installed which is hidden somewhere on the car, or may be use an adapter?

Just read somewhere that to use the sat nav on the RSN-E you have to keep the sat nav disk in the DVD drive, is that right?

Will see if i can find out for you, but im pretty sure that is correct.
 
this is correct , the dvd contains all the infomation for route guidance ,so the rns-e has to read from it to work . so the latest 2012 disc should have the up to date road changes on them .

Yep, that is correct mate.

To answer your questions in previous post, no extra wire is required for the Bluetooth, it should all be incorporated into your existing harness which plugs into the RNS-e.

With regards to the radio reception, the actual modul is located in the boot or tailgate, can't quite remember. Your actual aerial is your tailgate window, but the wires go to this module.
Some people don't bother to change because of the price and just live with the reception.
Hopefully someone will be along soon who can explain it better.

The rns-e sat nav can be quite picky I have found. it won't let you enter a full postcode. and often the street you want it doesn't have. Sat nav wise the portable garmins and tom toms far exceed audis attempt. everything else isn't bad :)

So is there a way to boost the antenna to improve the reception? Or will it be a full install to solve the reception issue?
