Boot Build

My mate had the Skoda version in his Octavia and I thought it was brilliant.
So I nicked it and built my own.

First, take 1 Audi A4 Avant.

Second, take some wood and throw it in the back of the the avant.

Third, arrange the wood in to some form of order.

Forth, Cut some more wood to help strengthen it and arrange that wood as well.

Fifth, Lay the lid and check for sizes.

Sixth, check lid for hinge location and rotation.

Seventh, Place trim on top to check for colour and size.

Eighth, Load foam and film.


I need to cover it in the carpet, trim the foam and add the finishing touches.
Handles, load hooks and the bits that goes in the foam.

Access to the spare wheel is compromised if the hidden floor space is full of things?

My boot only shrunk by 90mm in vertical measurement, so no massive loss as I don't really use the height.

The spare wheel is useles as it's 16" and my new wheels are 18".

The main reason for it is that it gives me a nice place to store my tools, spares, fire extinguisher, tyre sealer, picnic blanket, amps and other such items.

I keep those in the side pockets where the cd changer was and on the other side.

I ran out of room.
The CD changer side is where my 12v, 240v sockets live and the first aid kits.
The other side was and is at the moment, Warning triangle, tyre sealer, bulb kit, hand cleaner, water spry (for bird poo) and central locking pump. It all got a bit cramped in there.

It can all be moved to the base, along with the other items that's in the boot, mainly my tool bag, picnic blankets and spare tops.

scott, in a b7 you get a factory fitted false floor! aka as an underfloor storage compartment!
would it not have been easier modding one of these to fit?

I binned the polystyrene insert that sits inside the spare wheel, then used the freed up space to put the jack/wheel brace (in a bag from a saloon) axle stand, set of jump cables, heavy duty seat cover and a can of tyre sealant.

Its odd that only avants got the polystyrene bit!

The whole unit comes out in one peace weighs less than two bags of sugar.
Move the seats forward, life the back and drag out.
Not more difficult than having a suit case in your boot.

No idea mate.
I doubt it would cost less than this.
The wood and foam is from a trailer we built, so it cost me £0
well, bout £1 in screws and wood glue. lol

You now got a bag in your wheel?
What about the centre unit that keeps the floor up?

Well saloons dont have the polystyrene thing, their jack/wheel brace sits in a cloth bag in one of the side pockets, and the wheel is held in with just a plastic screw thing.

So i got the wheel hold down screw and the bag from a saloon and put the wheel changing stuff in there, and just placed it inside the spare wheel. Then chucked all the other bits in as well.

Not sure what you mean about supporting the boot floor? the floor has reinforcement around the wheel well.

I you look at this picture.
Right in the middle is the plastic giant screw thing.
That sits in the middle of the boot carpet and helps support it.
With out it the carpet sags and will fall in on it.

my saloon doesnt have the cloth bag, or polystyrene, it came with a proper hard case tool kit that contains the jack and all the tools, and it locks into frame in the side pocket above where the cd player sits. and i use the space in the spare wheel fro putting things like towels and hand cleaner to wipe hands etc if ive had to do anything on car when out or if hands got dirty for whatever reason.

also the floor in mine covering the spare wheel has a solid panel attached under it apart from round the edges so it doesnt have problem of falling into tyre well, but can course still get it out, but guess tis must be standard on the saloon

Is it a facelift?

The prefacelifts had the bag, as on a PFL there was no cubby on the left, just a little pocket thing and the CD changer sitting in a plastic thing.
My facelift saloon was missing its tools so its also just got a PFL bag in there.

I think it's a great idea now I know why you built it!! Keeps it nice and tidy, hate a messy boot with stuff flying round all over the place when you turn a corner. Good work

Thats the next thing I need to make.
Some form of shelf or something to put down the sides to stop the dogs.
Or I could just no take them. lol

I bought some more cloth off ebay but its ****** black not grey like it said.

Did a bit more today to try and get this finished off.

Got some foam, cut up to size, cut shapes out of it and fitted some bits in.

In the boot.

To help stop the items from rattling on the lid I carpet the top of the lid but the black trim I used is to thick (I think I said that further up). So I only trimmed the storage sections and it looks utter crap but since it will be down most of the time I'm not bothered.
I'll use the rest of the black trim to do the underside and inside of the box and what I have left of the grey to do the top sections so what you see matches.
