I'm in the process of reducing my electric bill and want to know what options I have to replace the prehistoric ballast and starter setup I'm currently using. I've been recommended high frequency tubes and smd LED tubes but have been given conflicting information about both. Basically, when a salesman tried to push a product, everything else is just rubbish! I'm after more solid answers, this could save me a packet in the long term!!

they have just changed all ours at work for LED, they seem to cost a fair bit but give a better cheaper light. I think they come in daylight and natural. One is a very bright harsh white light the other has a warmer glow to it.

Don`t know what the savings are or the payback as I wasn`t involved in the project but we have changed 1000`s on our site

Yes, expensive to buy now as they are in demand, but electric prices have shot up, and in commercial usage, these LED replacements are offering a 50% reduction on electric usage, plus they are suppose to be longlife being LEDs. Need to weigh up my options, they are not a direct swop, I need new holders and wiring I think?

LED will cost more for you to buy over new HF lights which have well over 10000hrs light. But then again LED should last longer so it may work out cheeper in the long run. Ive just finnished working on a new office block which was going for green status and used a lighting control system to reduce their consumption. The system used photocells in the lighting rows to detect ambient light from daylight and lighting. The system would Dim down the lights if enough natural light was coming through the window, reducing energy. Ive also worked on big shop refits and they have a system which turns about 60% of the lights off when the store shuts to allow enough to stack shelfs etc.... Depends how big your shop is for this system to viable to you.

So long as you want the lights to switch the same as what you have now there is no reason for any additional hard wiring. The lights however will need to be replaced to LED fittings. The fittings have all the internal wiring to control the LED lamp. You can buy retro fit LED lamps which fit most domestic lamp holders but these arnt great for comercial applications as the lamp is longer/bigger as it crams all the control gear in the base of the lamp holder. You wont however be able to retro fit any led lamps to your current light fittings if they are the old choke and starter based fittings.
