Arite i currently have a 8l audi s3 which i love, but due to work i need to sell to get a van. The missus has a 10 plate corsa which we will be selling to get one car between us. Ideally id get a s3 sportback but dont fancy the 20'000 or so it would cost, she wont have a 3 door car because we have just had a baby so she wants more doors. So i was thinkin of an 06-08 bmw 330d or if possible 335d saloon, all the a4 3.0tdis have higher or newer an too expensive. An was wondering what peoples thoughts are who have had bmws? Mainly due to the fact its rwd an she will be driving it mainly with the baby. Cheers

If it were my choice i would be going with the BMW 330d/335d (either are fantastic engines). I will probably get flamed for saying this but i just don't trust any VAG diesel engine as far as i could throw 'em. My dad's got the 335d engine in his X5 and it pulls like a train even though the car weighs the moon.
When it comes to snow a set of proper winter/snow tyres and it will be fine.

I'm not saying they don't have some issues but they are (in my opinion) superior to VAG diesels in terms of power, refinement and reliability. The swirl flaps only seem to have affected the E46 model and the E9X have a revised design.
no I agree mate, BMW diesels are much better it's only the swirl flaps that need to be looked at...other than that they are cracking units, my E92 had to have its flaps done though which was only a couple hours work
If by "Audi will have a fight on their hands" you mean "BMW will knock Audi down in one punch and leave it crying on the ground" then yes. If that engine is even as refined as current models and has similar or better MPG, it's going to scoop up entire markets on it's own.

I have a 2010 320d M Sport 184bhp and its a superb car, although you will want leather and Nav, preferrably Pro Nav like mine. Apart from the obvious benefits it lifts the whole cabin to a premium level that is missing on poverty spec cars. Mine is for sale BTW.........
Everything is VERY well screwed together,and the quality of the materials are excellent. The driving position is top notch as is the cabin layout but doesnt have the wow factor of a specced AUDI.
RWD isnt an issue unless its snowing but that is addressed with winter tyres, much of Europe and Scandinavia get mush harsher winters than the Uk and manage fine with RWD BMWs, Mercs etc, they just make sure they have the right rubber on for the conditions. I guess this can be a pain when you are not used to it in the UK though.
Having looked into 6cyl BMWs myself, they are not as frugal as you might think just because its a derv, all that grunt comes at a price.

I had a 335d, remapped to 350 bhp, and ran it for almost 2 years & 34000 miles, averaged 38mpg, more on a run.
Performance was astounding, the torque on offer has to be felt to be believed, downsides were extortionate price of run flat tyres and only available in auto.
Other than that have to admit I wish we had never sold it, agree you need sat nav and leather.
BMW diesels, actually engines full stop, are without a doubt far superior with Audi still holding all the cards when it comes to interiors

I am in the fortunate position that I have both an A3 Sportback S Line 170 which is fully loaded and also a fully loaded E93 (conv) 330D. The BMW is far more comfortable to drive and returns 40 mpg. The Audi is thirsty for a 2.0 lump and a lot more noisy, good for blatting around in though.

I had a e90 330d a few years ago and it was an amazing car. Had a 325i e46 before that. You can't beat the drive of a BMW, however Audi interiors are more superior in my opinion. If you could mix the two then it would be thd perfect car!

my mum had a 330d e46 - was a great car until one of the swirl flaps dropped at 70k and bent a piston! £2500 later it was fixed enough to trade it in but was smoking like a chimney. I've had a 120d and I think the bmw diesels are so much more refined than the audi engines

330=335d blow turbo's a lot mate they seam to be another weak point of a otherwise cracking engine , why don't you get a 2.0tfsi Q sportback that ill save you some ££ and they are 200hp standard little bit of remapping and your away
