We're getting quotes in West and North Yorks of £230 and £250. This is for the first service which is due (according to DIS) at 18,600 miles.

Is this about right?

Cheers

Just had mine serviced - same model - here in Cambridge - cost £240 inc. so sounds about right.

Think there has been another post about servicing and it implied there was a reasonable difference across the country. Might be worth a day trip if the saving is significant.

Which Vindis garage did you use, Cambridge or Huntingdon.

Ouch...

That's expensive isn't it,for what amounts to an oil and filter change and a wash and hoover,if you're lucky?

I just paid £120.84 for a main dealer 18000 mile service for my wife's Honda 4x4 and they valeted it as well.

I doubt they did any less than Audi,so where do they got off charging exactly double ??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/noidea.gif

My thoughts entirely. My Civic Type R is in this month as well (expensive month at the Smith household!) for a major service and I've been quoted £220. I know I will need brakes (discs and pads) as well and will be pricey /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif but I am still amazed that Audi want £240 ish for, as you say, a minor service. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Just had a quote from Wakefield Audi - £290 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif

Yeah right!

You Guys! Those dealers up North and the in East have seen you coming! I'd speak to Audi UK!

I just had mine serviced at Parklands Audi in Gloucester. As with you, it was the 1st service at 18k. It cost me a whole £201 inc VAT, plus collection from home, and returned to my home, washed, hoovered, old phone bracket removed ready for new one, and the wheels waxed! How's that for service. They also told me that the next one at 40K will be £300 as the DSG gearbox oil has to be changed.

I was very impressed with that. My wife has this thing that Audi are expensive, but her Peugeot 206 Diesel costs us about £150 for service, the dealer is mile away, and I have to take the car to them. They do wash it though! She was very impressed by the service Parklands offer, she now wants an A2!!!

This will ensure I order my next car from Parklands I reckon, even though I have Northfield Audi (Tetbury) slightly nearer.

All Hail Parklands Audi!!!

Does the service on a Honda include a years Brakedown, Recovery etc. If you have your car serviced by a main dealer you keep you free Audi On-call going for another year. Take away the cost of the full AA or RAC membership (current full RAC membership is £147.00) for a year and the service cost is not so bad. Also how often do, for example Hondas have to be serviced? Do they have fixed interval or variable servicing.

Hondas come with 3 years AA membership automatically. I think it can be renewed after that. So we get 3 x 147 = £441 included in the warranty if you look at it like that.

Servicing is every 12,500 miles (was 12,000 until recently) or 1 year.

My other half drives the Audi - she's doing around 18,000 per annum so that's a service every year it would seem.

I think when you look at the "lifetime" cost then the costs may come closer together (Audi -v- Honda).

£ 240.00 though...
Jeeeeeezus....

Here was me starting thread yesterday about BMW garages being a rip off.

If Audi can charge £240 for an oil and filter change, what would they charge for the same work as the BMW I mentioned...

Perhaps there'd be little difference.

Wonder what the major service costs? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It's a con,there's no other way to put it,IMO.

There's no reasonable justification for it.

Their mechanics are no better or worse than any other make ( I drink regularly with an ex Audi mechanic who will tell you some tales )and they don't do anything 'special', but they pray on the fact that people will swallow the charges because of the fear factor about warranties and the fact that's it's a 'premium' make.

I'd be interested in seeing figures as to how many cars are still serviced at Audi dealerships when the warranty runs out.

I'd hope most people would see sense and seek cheaper servicing elsewhere, perhaps at an independent specialist.

If I were buying a used car I would look for a full service record, yes.

However,I would not look for main dealer stamps all the time.If the owner showed the car was serviced by a reputable garage or independent specialist I would have no problem with that at all.

I certainly would not pay any extra for a car just because the owner has thrown his dosh away on main dealer charges,to help pay for their lovely glass showrooms and designer flooring.

Well it seems you southerners are getting ripped off BIG style, because I have just phoned Highland Audi ( Elgin ) who quoted me £180.00 inc. VAT /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now that sounds reasonable, seeing as it costs me £100 every 12k miles to service my wife's fiesta.

Yup Japper, that's certainly easier to swallow.

Good job.

The listed price for the parts for the service including oil is £65.00 and I'm sure the technicians don't work for a teener an hour.

[/ QUOTE ]

That may be the listed price, but it's sure as hell not what they'll be paying.

The ex Audi mechanic I know buys 45 gallon drums of the same oil that Specialist Cars Audi Aberdeen use,or at least did when he worked there around 2-3 years ago.
From memory (I've seen the drums myself) it's made by Mobil and has the name 'Quantum' or something.
It's obviously trade only stuff.

He charges £10 for 5 litres, and he's making money on it.

He was on under a tenner an hour when he worked for Audi.

If that oil is Mobil and Quantum then it's not the correct oil for the AVS service. The Quantum oil is for the normal fixed interval service schedule and is much cheaper. The listed price for the 4.3 litres of Quantun oil for a service is only £24.00 as opposed to £41.00 for the higher spec AVS oil.

The dealers in Scotland must pay their technicians less than those down here in Cambridgeshire !. I am basically retired and just work 12 hours a week at the local B+Q as a Customer Advisor and I get nearly a tenner for that. I know a couple of the technicians at my local dealer quite well. When I see them next I will ask if they will tell me how much they earn. Perhaps dealers in Scotland just charge the same a pocket the difference.

The oil was an example and I'm aware of the fact that it wouldn't be suitable for the AVS cars.

If Audi state the AVS used in a service costs £41 retail, what do you think they're paying for it in the vast quantities they'll order ?

Japper has shown that Scottish dealers are cheaper by as much as £70 for the same service !

You're obviously happy paying over the odds for your servicing (maybe you got to keep a fair proportion of the £400 per hour your employers' charged /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif) but I think it's a shocking sum for 66 minutes work and some parts and lubricants that cost them sweeties.

I've also got a 2.0TDi Sport (53 plate).
Had mine done at 17,600 miles in December.
Cost me £156.56 at Bolton, checked this with Warrington at the time and was quoted the same.

They told me that all dealers should be on the same pricing structure. I wouldn't expect it to have increased so much in 6 months.

£100 saving is worth a drive.

I agree it's a lot of money, but it's not unrealistic.

[/ QUOTE ]

It clearly is though Eeef.

Other Audi dealers are charging much less than £240.00,and Honda can do the same sort of service for £120.00.

I can only assume that dealers see customers as more "corporate" rather than "personal" and so can quote and be paid higher prices.

I know it's anecdotal but of those people I know with Audis, only one is a personal customer rather than a company car driver. And that one person is my other half - merde!

Yes bowfer, but Ford / Daewoo / Citroen can all do it cheaper than Honda, but you dont complain about that. The reason is they're not as nice cars as Audi. You have to compare like for like, Audi-BMW-Mercedes-Lexus-Jaguar. Servicing a Ferrari costs a fortune and they probably do little more than an oil change. But if you can afford a Ferrari then you can afford to service it. It's the same with most nice things in life, Designer clothes - are they THAT much better than Primark?. Is a Sony item that superior to Dell equipment?. Is a high class hooker that much better than than a 'Torry' slapper /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif.

There must be more Ford / Renault / Vauxhall company cars than BMW / Audi etc. Only the lucky ones get prestige company cars /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't even tell me about Wakefield Audi there a joke. I went in to ask how to turn off the Service oil light as I had just changed the oil inbetween the recommended changes & they tried to tell me that it had to be done by them?

rubbisshh!

Did a search on here and found it combination of button pushing!! Plus its written in the manual somewhere!
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif to them Cheeky /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/swear.gif

I agree with you about "corporate" customers. Perhaps if all Audi customers were personal it would bring the prices down a little.

Agreed Japper.
Most Audi customers probably don't even ask the price, coz it's being billed elsewhere.

At least this thread has shown their are 'inconsistencies' and shopping around is worthwhile.

I reckon £150 is fair.

£240 and I'd be asking **** Turpin if I could pat his horse.

I have to get my car serviced at a dealer approved by Leaseplan (company car) which, in England at least, is always the manufacturer's dealership. However, for my mate who lives in Dumfries, the approved service centre is an independent garage who charge £170. Go figure?

PS,

When I got my car and worked out the fixed service price, it didnt work out any better. As it would only really cover 2 service intevals and potential one set of tyres.

[ QUOTE ]
All that time spent polishing and you don't notice when your tyres are bald ?

Get a grip man !

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL...got a grip and it makes you blin /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

[ QUOTE ]
Yours may be different Japper, but my only problem with full maintenance has been that they will tell you which tyre depots to use and what kind of tyres you can have,so there's a lack of choice and control.
They also will flat refuse to replace tyres until they are absolutely on the legal limit, which is 1.6mm I think.
I usually prefer to renew long before that as I find grip and stability suffer.

Like I said though, yours may be more flexible.

[/ QUOTE ]

bowfer, I asked speccy cars this before agreeing and they themselves will change my tyres. I dont want qwikfit muppets anywhere near my car. I also believe they will replace if 2.5mm or lower.

What ever way I cant lose anyway as I'll get 3 services ( DIS showing 15k ) DSG oil change, brake fluid. That'll total £900 before tyres, brake pads or any other unforseen wearable component goes belly up. So 2-3 tyres on this and i'm breaking even.

2-3 tyres in 45k miles /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif more like 8 tyres at the rate they're wearing out.

So I wouldn't be entitled to a 12 month service for each of the 3 years, even if the car was telling me it doesn't need servicing? It doesn't mention variable servicing in the leaflet. I will be doing low mileage 10K-12K. if i am not careful I will be told to s@d off into the relavent forum. apoligies.

All new Audi's are set to AVS. Your monthly figure would / should be around £25, but you would only get in 2 services. So you'll pay out £900 in 3 years and 2 services will be £400. Even Mr average will waste 4 tyres in 33k, so if yours is a sport model then that's your other £500. Throw in wipers, brake fluid, if you have DSG box then an oil change for that, maybe.

It's a close call on lower mileages, and dependant on what monthly figure they quote. Their quotes vary from month to month, so I would recommend you get a quote now, which stays guaranteed for 60 days. Then get one when you collect car and take the cheaper one.

I'm assuming your tyres aren't lasting too well then Mr Japper? I looked at mine the other day and after just 5,700 miles they are looking decidely warn. Not in need of replacing yet but definatley looking a bit on the low side.

See bowfer occasioanlly I must look at my tyres and I wasn't even cleaning them, actually god knows what I was doing looking at them as I wasn;t even washing the car let alone the wheels..

Not too bad MB, as the fronts will be 'replaceable' at 15k and the rears are wearing out quicker now that I upped the rear tyre pressures for better handling, but should still last to mid 20s.

I know that the thread is about TDI servicing, but ...

I'm having my 2.0FSI serviced for the first time next week at Bolton Audi for £168 inc VAT. Mileage will be 18500.

My wife's Corolla has recently had it's first service (fixed 10k intervals) at a Toyota stealers for £76 inc VAT.

So, considering my A3 goes approx. twice as far between services, Smith Knight Fay Bolton don't appear to be taking the mickey.

Fortunate I must be to know an Audi technician still employed by Audi. He uses the workshop on a Saturday morning to do a few jobs, and did the first service for my A3 at £120 cash (and still stamped the book and entered it onto the computer system, so warranty intact still*). If I had booked it in normally he would still have been the bloke doing the work (apparently there's only two who are qualified to work on the 'new' A3s) and it would have cost near the £250 mark, much the same as many of you are saying.

*well, that would be intact if I hadn't fitted a non-audi head unit... sigh...

I've been reading an interesting article in a bike magazine this week, which can easily be carried over into the car world..
The article stated that there is no actual need for services to be carried out by main dealers, even if the bike/car is under warranty.
Most warranties merely state that the bike/car must be serviced by a 'competent mechanic using the correct equipment' (or similar wording,I don't have the article to hand).

My servicing is paid for by the company,so it's not something I have to worry about, but if I were paying for my servicing myself I would be investigating this further and seeking cheaper alternatives as main dealers' rates merely serve to pay for their vast overheads.

It would be interesting to hear Audi's comments about this as they, apparently, cannot insist that you use the main dealer.

bowfer, Your right, it's the new EU legislation or something. The only thing you gain by Audi dealer is your extra two years roadside assistance and maybe resale could be affected by not having Audi dealer stamp /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/noidea.gif

Japper,
What is this 2 years extra roadside assistance? I've had my car serviced at an audi main dealer about six months ago, does that entitle me to roadside assistance? What is covered? Am I covered by RAC or something? I assumed that my roadside assistance expired when my warranty expired which was about 8 months ago? I took out RAC cover as part of my insurance cover, did I waste my money. The dealer didn't mention anything about roadside assistance. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
