Looking for some advice all for my B6 A4 tdi manual box, 130 AWX.

Driving round today and I started hearing a metallic clattering from engine/transmission (very noticeable), think its louder from drivers side, put in the clutch and it slightly improves, drive a bit, it goes away, turn off engine, start engine to check and it comes back, turn off, try again noise gone. Im guessing itll do it after ive driven again. Gearchanges are smooth and nothing wrong with performance of clutch, geabox or engine.

Im guessing its the DMF? :(

Any other ideas? This car is costing more than its worth after fixing door switches, CCM and programming.

Thanks for any advice

sounds like DMF mate. I feel your pain having had one go on me before. Does your car wobble at idle which stops with the clutch in? that can be a sign.

Not yet mate but imagine it will do soon enough. Just a very loud clattering.

What are the sort of costs involved? How long do you think I could drive it roughly as I need to do a 70 mile trip tomorrow?

if it is the DMF you may as well stick a new clutch in whilst the box is out. You'll probably talking the neck end of 1K. you're best getting it looked at to determine what it is before panicing though.

Spose could be anything clutch related. Its a Y reg with 105k miles in good nick, not so sure its worth spending anymore money on it as its probably only worth 2-2.5k. Do you guys know what the options are if I dont repair?

Also worried wether Ill make it to work and the garage etc tomorrow without breaking down?

Thanks for the excellent advice so far guys.

take it easy and you should be ok. if you dont repair it could **** your gearbox. it seems like a lot of dough (which it is) but if its fixed then you're laughing. you could go and spend X amount on a new car and have a lot more probs. better the devil you know and all that.

a clutch kit is under 180 and a new dmf is under 280 thats top prices so hunt around and you will get them cheaper then its just the fitting but with you having the parts already it will cut the price as a garage always mark the prices up when they supply them for the job

if you're quick, there's 15% off clutch kits at ECP at the moment. Good advice from simon there, get a diagnoses and tell them you'll buy the parts.

iv made the mistake letting them buy the parts and then getting a bill after and thinking how the hell do they put the price up that much if it cost them 80 trade and to none trade it is 150 you can bet your *** you will pay the 150

I know some mechanics that will do labour for a good price for me, they usually allow me to supply my own parts, so Ill take your guys advice and get a diagnosis, then Ill hunt for parts. Just went out to start it and it started doing it again, a little quieter but still there, clutch out rattle, clutch in, no rattle (or far less noticeable). Car isnt shaking with clutch in or out so I guess its at its infant stage. Sigh.

Thanks again guys.

just had dmf clutch rear mains fitted, done it lots cheaper than expected but in with a few contacts lol.... would of been nearly £900 paying to have it done though...... i supplied parts gen vag and vw specialist fitted them for £200 and whilst stripped i threw a turbo on her aswell £100 labour to fit turbo....... sounds like the release bearing at bit the dust to me m8... but also check the rear gearbox mount as mine was totally goosed causing a clatter noise when pulling off/slowing down but my dmf was causing a juddering when pulling off and twice as bad in reverse

ive googled solid flywheel conversions but for me i choose not to because pple say the become sharp pulling off and heavy to apply the clutch not sure why this is but enough to put me off....
gen parts was expensive m8... £190 ish clutch kit 038 198 141fx / £470 dm flywheel 038 105 266 an / flywheel bolts £14 / rear mains seal 06a 103 171 a £53 / 8e0 399 105 hb was rear gear box mounting £57 and £200 labour for fitting i got amazing discount lol on the parts.... i was looking on fleabay at a luk dmf/clutch kit for the awx for £440 which was the way i was going so 440+200+vat= maybe £750 ish

Again guys, cant thank you all enough for all the info. PM replied Turkster.

when mine was juddering/clattering m8 it was quite violent under your left foot when low revs then planted...... my old dmf was mega goozed when removed full of dryed black cruddy grease

simon the correct dmf vag part number for 130 AWX is 038 105 266 AN.... try this number in fleabay search

ebay is nearly always over priced now days imo if he puts his reg in on the link i put up it will give him the right one for his car with the price

Got my DMF from ebay, £240 delivered. Clutch cost me £160 for a valeo one, lets not even get into the first clutch I had put in haha.

Eurocarparts....

Clutch kit is - £146 LUK
DMF is - £294 LUK
Bolts - £11 each?

So..... les 15% is 374, but would need bolts.

Im guessing labour is around £400?

lol @ simon..... yeah i was looking at these kits for weeks but my m8 come up with some goods for me .... twist 123 i know vw specialist that will do it for £250 for you in west mids

I priced up a new clutch and DMF the other day can get a Valeo clutch for £90 and a DMF for 180ish good job my mum works for a car spares company, but looking at the posts above what other parts on top of those do I need?

hey tom i changed the rear main oil seal flange as there was slight damp oil around the bell housing, also with 130k on the clock thought while it's stripped best to do it now than a possible failure shortly down the line i also changed flywheel bolts but that was also my choice as best work practice....

Hey Mark that more of an issue on the TDI's? I have the 1.8T!

to be honest tom im pretty sure it was the grease from the dmf not the rear mains but didnt want a possible failure later on so got the parts m8

Spoke to garage, DMF on its way out, he can feel a slight movement on engagement/disengagement, clattering gone which he says isnt unheard of. He said it mustve only started very recently as clutch etc still feels pretty good besides slight movement. He also said I could get another couple thousand miles out of it before failure which buys me a week or two till I sort out other things I need to get done also.

Quote for fitment of DMF and clutch kit £250, I supply parts.

good price for fitting mate where abouts are you if near me in kent i can get trade price on parts for you

Hi Simon,

Thanks thats a very kind offer, may take you up on it. From what I recall we arent to far from each other.
