Should I go for a 2.0TDi S-line?

Stay well clear. It'll be a BLB engine so not only will it have the balancer shaft fault, it will also have the pretensioner fault. Approx 2k to fix or 5k to put right when it goes wrong.

In the B7 range don't go for a 2.0TDI.
 
well i have a BLB engined 2.0 tdi 140 s line avant! with 78k on the clock and not got any problems with my oil pump balance shaft shizzle yet!
not saying that i wont have, but audi sold thousands of these, and only a fraction had had this overrated problem!
(i will probably eat these words one day when mine goes tits up)
but in reality, if you get a clean well looked after, well serviced example, i cant see any problem with them! i love mine!
 
Just like any car in reality Chez, always hear the good old horror stories! :p

Going to see it tomorrow and you can always tell straight away if something has been well looked after. Not to say that something major won't happen a month down the road any way. Sure its always a gamble.

It's either one of these or a Golf and I've already had 2 Golfs over the years :-/

Listen to wrath. Far more than a "fraction" of these produced cars had/ will have this problem. Just look at the thread at the top of this section and you will see exactly what the problem is and how many people have been affected by it. You have been warned.
 
I got a 2.0TDi 90k and no problems but that one is unbelievably cheap if you can view it and all the paperwork is good and obviously do a hpi check then go for it that would be a right bargin
 
I fully understand where people are coming from in that the internet is packed with people raising issues about their cars and not really how good they are. I must point out when the BLB issue raised it's head, there were people saying "My car has done X and it's fine, blah-blah". Some of those people have then had the problem.

A lot of the balancer shaft issues occurred without any initial symptoms. In fact, I have received several reports where the pretensioner has snapped while driving on a motorway, engine seized immediately...you can guess the rest.

There are always faults with all cars but this one is serious, you can't detect it and it's costly to fix and put right. Lowest mileage to have the problem was 43k! This isn't a case of a pipe coming loose or a dodgy switch of a cloggy EGR valve, this has ramifications and the damage done will mean your car will be a writeoff in many circumstances as the car value drops.

Definitely no to a BLB (I have one!!!!)....I can't shout this loud enough, NOOOOOO!!!
And I would guard against the later models as it has only been in the last year when problems with these started to manifest themselves. The A3 does not have these problems, possibly something to do with the engine being planted the other way on.

I obviously can't stop you but I will wait in the wings ready with "I told you so" :friends:
 
I have a 2.0tdi how will I know if it the BLB engine or not?
 
Wrath, does this affect other VAG cars? We have a 2008 VW Jetta 2.0TDi, just wondering if I should be looking into this?

Not sure on the extent. A4's, A6's, Skoda Superb's, VW Passat's and some Chryser 300's are susceptible but Seat Leon's, A3's, Fabia's aren't. I suspect it's down to the engine layout. Seeing as the Jetta is a Golf with a boot, I doubt it has the fault.
 
Without wishing to hijack. I have a feeling I'll be looking at a TDI Avant B7 shortly too.

It will probably be a manual 170 on an 07/57. Whats the fault history like?

Injectors are the main one for 170's although it seems like dealers will change these for free. I don't see a lot of mentions of the 170s with balancer shaft problems but expect it must run the same thus same rules apply.
 
Wrath you need to get out more! ,I bet you have a room in your house with all the walls covered in balance shaft failure info,pie charts of how many have failed mabe a cut out of the Audi CEO'S head on a dart board for not replying to your letters.

it does indeed involve a lot of shizzle which to be fair is probably why this injury costs are so much to rectify if caught early and is probably way past the capabilities of most garages i know of!
i dont know of any back street garages who would or could perform this cheaply! lol
agreed this is a terrible problem
agreed this is a common affliction
but, not every blb is affected
and not all will be,
but many will, many wont! sods law it seems!
at least we have forums like this to highlight and pinpoint such problems and how to rectrify!

To be a pedant, all BLB's *are* affected as they all rely on a piece of plastic with a shelflife so at some point it will fail. Agreed that some will last longer than others. Remember, it never gets checked, it's not part of a service schedule and no other manufacturer is dumb enough to do this, not even Ford, which is surprising.
 
Well I've checked mine and its a BRD code so I'm happy :)
 
Sorry to dissapoint, and stop your short lived happiness, but BRD is still known to have oil pump failure due to hex rounding off in both 140 and 170 2ltr tdis.

engine codes affected by balance shaft failure: BRD, BVF, BVA, BRE, BLB, BNA, BRF and BPW, BRC

Hmm... Worrying. I just got my 2006 A4 four months ago and it's a BRE-engined model.

How likely is it that this balance shaft failure is going to happen to every single model that apparently affected by this issue? Is it something that Audi will amend if I take it to them, as I got a year's warranty with it?

We don't know how many area affected as it's really only been recently the non-BLBs have started having problems. Audi will not do anything under warranty unless it goes faulty and then they would.
