tdi turbo upgrade

just had a **** load of work done to my engine (tdi 110) and had it remapped, but the turbo has decided it doesnt like the extra boost and is dying.

so wondering whether to replace with a reconditioned one or upgrade, but not sure what my options are. ive seen one kit, but its 900 odd quid and im not spending that sort of money.

the mechanic i use reckons the standard turbo is capable of anything up to 180bhp with a stage 2 map, i would be happy if i could get to about 160bhp,

anyone got any experience or recommendations on this?
 
Quite a few options really but the most common (from a lot of my friends which have pd130 engines) is a hybrid PD150 turbo which will do about 220bhp but if you`re happy with 160 then its probably a waste and you might aswell stick with a standard or a pd130 which will do the 170/300ft-lbs mark with just bolt ons.
 
if yours is the 110 bhp then it should be the VE style engine, not the pd, there not as stright forward as bolting on a pd150 hybrid on for 220bhp, i had one and got it to just under 170bhp with pd130 turbo (pd150 1749vb is better) .216 injectors and a custom remap, to use either the pd130 or pd150 turbo you need an adapter pipe for the lower intercooler pipe (sfs performance sell it)

so the pd150 turbo can be used then with an adapter, that is good i was under the impression it wouldnt be an option at all on the 110. thats probably the way forward to be honest, i say id be happy with 160 but realistically, i want MORE

Not without injectors.

Remember to budget for a new clutch and DMF or SMF conversion as you will need one before long once you up the torque even more.
 
what sort of power can you get reliably out of the stock turbo, using bigger injectors if needed?
 
What makes you think your original turbo is dying?

160 is probably the absolute max the original turbo will produce but you'll need injectors for even that and I'd guess the life of the turbo will be reduced.

After a map things get expensive as you need injectors, turbo ideally an FMIC and before long a clutch.
 
to be honest i havnt really had it properly diagnosed, but theres a bit of oil coming from somewhere around the turbo. enough to leave about 4 or 5 drips on the floor over night. and you can smell it burning off the exhaust after a hard drive.

Firstly i thought it may be headgasket leaking as ive just had it done, but thats dry.
not power steering pump either.
car was fine after top end rebuild, but within a week of having it remapped it started doing this so guessing the turbo isnt liking the extra boost. also the guy who remapped it said the egr valve is leaking, so putting an egr delete pipe on today
 
egr delete is now on, fiddly job. car seems pull much more smoothly, but possibly very slight power loss if anything. anyone got a part number for the adapter to fit the turbo from a pd130?
 
I've gotta be honest I don't think the EGR delete will offer any noticeable performance increases. I got told my EGR was leaking and it simply had a bit of residue inside. I fitted a catch can to try and reduce the amount of residue in the intercooler and boost system.

Personally, I definitely wouldn't be putting an EGR delete on if you think your turbo is leaking oil. If the turbo seals go the engine can runaway on it's own oil and the EGR houses the anti shudder valve, which stops air from entering the intake which is pretty much the last chance you have of stopping a runaway engine if stalling it doesn't work.

A PD130 turbo isn't plug and play power gain, you'll need another map and injectors and I also believe the pipes going to the turbo too. You shouldn't need an adaptor plate though, it depends on the bolt patterns and if it's from a longitudinal or transverse PD130 engine.
 
yeah egr delete was only put on because there was a significant leak from the egr valve and it was the cheaper option. i realise it is a (slight) risk removing this because of the possibility of runaway but its a calculated risk, the turbo will be replaced in the near future. having said that i think the shudder is going to **** me off so im looking for a replacement egr valve anyway.

planning on a stage 2 remap as soon as turbo and injectors are fitted, seem to be getting a lot of conflicting ideas on what work is involved in using a different turbo (fitment wise). the mechanic i use said he basically would rather not do it which puts me in an annoying position as he charges £20-£25 an hour, whereas the only other place i know of who i trust with my car charges more than double that so i may have to go with the cheaper option of using the standard turbo. is there a hybrid?????
 
Find out exactly if the PD130 turbo will fit without an adaptor. I was told it would if the engine was the same orientation.

You'd benefit from an FMIC if you're getting a bigger turbo.

What figures do you want, the PD130 turbo will struggle at 190hp
 
if i could get it to 175, id be very happy with that, i dont want to push the engine to its limits, as i do a lot of miles and ive spent a lot on this car, so want it to last a while.
hopefully the pd130 will bolt on, seems like the best all round option if it will, i will look into it properly, seems a lot of mkiv owners do the swap to pd turbos, so hopefully its not too much work
 
i have and im more than happy to help sounds like you just need a repair kit, the extra boost as pushed the oil past the seals i recon.
 
any of the 1749va PD130 turbos will fit as long as its from a transverse 8v, the only part that needs to be changed is the turbo to intercooler pipe work
