Hi all,

My PS3 decided to give up the ghost on Monday night after a few hours of GT5. It was running fine and then just cut out beeped at me and left me with a flashing red light.

I switched off the PS3 at the mains and left it for 5 mins. I then started it back up again and it ran ok for 2 mins before cutting out again.

I've read on the net that the issue could either be the HDD or the PS3 overheating. I've tested the HDD in a caddy on my PC and it detects it so I think the issue is with the PS3.

Has anyone had this issue before and how did you fix it? I've read about re-soldering the motherboard but I need to be sure of the issue before I make things worse.

Cheers
Westy

I heard this was a common fault on the eary ps3 where the joins on the solders on the motherboard split due to overheating. I may be mistaken on this one. Try contacting Sony directly to see if there was a recall and whether they will fix for free.

Cheers mate. It is an old one. It's already had a replacement bluray drive. It's starting to get like Triggers broom ;)

Take it to a small Indi computer store that fixes them get it fixed the fix will only last about a month then once fixed take it straight to game and trade it in against a new model ps3. You will need to get it fixed as they like to check them and make sure they run.

Nice idea but I've put it on eBay now. The faulty ones still seem to fetch £40 as people are willing to have a crack at fixing them.

I'll have a nice shiney slim one in a few days anyway :yahoo:

I went with this in the end:

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Seller has 100% positive feedback so I bought it and waited for his email. It never cam so I contacted him asking when I will receive info on the courier to swap PS3s. He replied to say it will be tomorrow (which is now today).

I have taken a day off work and spent all day waiting for the courier which currently hasn't shown (time now is 4pm).

I emailed the guy at 3pm asking if he could update me with a tracking number or some courier details but he told me he would chase it tonight as he is just about to go to bed as he's been working night shifts! WTF.

If my new PS3 doesn't arrive today I will be putting a blemish on this guys 100% positive feedback rating for messing me about.

Thats good to hear westy. Guess you will be catching up with gt5 tonight then.

It's been on for an hour and a half doing updates! Only on 10 out of 14 :(

Patience Westy, it wont be long, then the gaming can commence, lol.

Shame there will be around 2 weeks of playing catchup to get to where I was. I must do backups religiously with this PS.

Yes you must Westy, nothing more frustrating than losing your saved games. Have fun.

******** wish i had seen this cheers for the link westy :)

Ive already bought a replacement for £210 for 120gb slim and new f1 game :(

Mine used to freeze up and overheat but have had in bits 3 times since i bought it (day it was released) and cleaned it out and removed dust etc but have admited defeat this time as wont even power up long enough to remove the disk, so had to dismantle the br drive to get it out as couldn't bear the idea of not having COD ;)

Will try and repair it when i go back to work if not will be going for spares

Screw it all back together and do the swap on ebay in the above link. Then just sell the slim and make some money back.
