RIP my K04 - Replace...or Hybrid K04

good luck buddy, what's the spec if the turbo?

Thanks

Spec copied from the site is typically sparce but listed below:-

MD212 - Stage 2 Hybrid turbo comprises:
  • High Flow K06 Billet Aluminium Lightweight Compressor Wheel
  • Re-profiled compressor housing
  • Turbo Dynamics designed uprated 360 degree thrust kit
  • Lightened turbine wheel also modified to help reduce backpressure
  • Turbocharger fully blueprinted to motorsport standards
  • Max recommended boost: 22-24 PSI
  • Estimated Power Output: 280-300 bhp

Stage 2 - £895.00 +VAT

Very little difference between this ans stage 3 to be honest.

Stage 3 has the rs6 turbine wheel, yours has the k04 wheel but lightened ie some of the nose is removed to lighten it. Basically it's a k04 with a larger 2283 compressor wheel.

Agreed. It'll do the job though I imagine. Any experience of this turbo anyone?

I was told mine was a stage 4? it as a rs6 turbine....

I would have thought so, I guess who you bought it from and what they rate their stages at will dictate what you actually have. One mans stage 1 might be another's stage 3. I would have thought though that stage 4 would be the rs6 exhaust wheel with 2283 compressor.

A 2283-spec wheel like the one in your new turbo is definitely 300bhp-capable, even when paired with that clipped 50/42 turbine wheel. Yes, it'd be better to have a bigger exducer like on the RS6 (which is 50/45), but that would necessitate sourcing of a new turbine rotor, which is costly. Instead, they retain the stock rotor from the K04 and modify it. I've worked with a car over here running the same turbine design with a lesser 2280 compressor wheel. He was getting 300+bhp. You can too.

Best of luck with the build.

That's music to my ears.

Many thanks for that post.

Just another quick update...and following this useful discussion, I have managed to contact turbodynamics and agreed to go to stage 3 instead with the rs6 compressor. For the sake of £36 inc VAT it was a no brainer on the end and provides more growth opportunity at a later stage. Delivery for next wednesday. Hopefully the xs power mani will be here by then too.

Link and spec is as follows:-

MD364 - Stage 3 Hybrid turbo comprises:

that doesnt really make any sense?

The stage2 turbo stated "k06" compressor, which is presumably the 2283 previously mentioned, what you've just posted there says "k04" which is not the same thing.

Theres also no mention of the 45mm turbine in that spec list.

As i said earlier, you really need to know exactly what they're giving you, "Stage blah" means nothing.

What you want, is the k06-2283 Compressor wheel, and the 45mm RS6 turbine wheel.

Ha...classic!...Just checked with turbodynamics and you are correct, it doesn't make sense and there has been a type error on their website which they will be amending tonight apparently.

It's true spec, lifted from another part of their site, and confirmed over the phone is as follows:-

"High Flow K06 “Billet Aluminium” Lightweight Compressor Wheel, Re-profiled compressor housing to
suit, Turbo Dynamics designed uprated 360 degree thrust kit,, Lightened turbine wheel also modified
to help reduce backpressure, Turbocharger fully blueprinted to motorsport standards.
Max recommended boost pressure 22-24 PSI"
APPROX 320-330 BHP

So, happier...to a degree but there was no mention of a 2283 but use of a K06-2014....though!!??

5306-123-2014 is the part number for the K06 series Compressor wheel used in the 8P S3, which is otherwise known as a "2283" on account of its Exducer (2.2") and Inducer (83% of 2.2") measurements!

Are they actually using the RS6 turbine? The revised description still doesnt mention it, instead saying its "lightened" and "modified to reduce backpressure" which probably means they've clipped the 42mm S3 turbine, rather than actually using the larger 45mm RS6 wheel.

For reference, the standard S3 turbine wheel is part number 5304-120-5015, and the RS6 item is 5304-120-5018

I would seriously ask them which parts they are actually putting in the turbo.. There is no reason for them not to give them to you.

Agreed.

Not yet. Will be severely limited until the rods are in but it's just a matter of time I imagine.

What would an approx quite be for rods and labour for install?

Thanks

I bought rods and big end shells yesterday with the intention of doing the work myself. Rods were £350+vat and an extra £75+vat for rifle drilled. Bearings were then £90+vat.

I've also gone the full hog of buyin a new water pump, oil pump, large port head, belts, gaskets etc etc. It really depends how far you want to go as there are lots of other jobs that can be done while the head is off.
