Running Issues at Cold

And what car was that ??

Ford escort is what I did the job on have known it on a 1972 land rover and a 02 bmw 330 too although they all smoked a fair bit for about a minute or two before stopping the bm was the worst it was like the turbo had blown!

I'm not saying this is what's wrong in this case it was just a thought

You can measure them, they get smaller on the opposite side of where the clamp holding them down are seated.

Now you mention it I did notice a flat spot on one side

They also harden up too

Seals changed, car runs smooot when coldstarted now, but still a little bit jerky to start on cold engine. (wery much better than before)
I had alot of wear inside my injector holes, so that might be the reason that it dident fix it 100%, the sharp wear-edges might have done damage to the new seals when i fitted the injector, dont know how to fix that... its a new head or pulling it and shipping it to someone that have the right equipment to fix those holes....
Maybe i will try to redo the sealjob and fill the wears with loctite weld, so that the edges dont damage anything when fitting.
But that wont be done now. i will run it a while and se if it gets better after some break in (cold/hot engine movements)
Damn VAG, they could have done this better.... mileage is only 140k.
Well all you others, if you change seals, inspect for wear too. the holes wears oval, and the wear is against the gearbox side.

If you have wear, my idea about filling it with loctite weld or similar compound, and lube it well before fitting might help saving the rings from damage.

Rich, having had a good read & recap on this thread I don't think my problems were the same as yours. However, just thought I'd post with an update.

Fitted a new battery & 6 nice new glow plugs & it has totally transformed my car. Outside temp was down to -1.5 today & she turned over with virtually instant fire & zero smoke

I was advised to do this over a year ago but had the battery checked as good @ 75% & thought that if there was a problem with the glowies then it would surely throw a fault code or at least keep flashing on the dash.........well, it would seem not.

Have you changed your battery / glow plugs since starting this thread ?
For @ £100 it might be worth a try

i have a 130bhp 1.9tdi sport. Have exactly the same problem. Have quite a lot of smoke on start up on cold or damp mornings. Drive for 5mins and the smoke dissapears. Its only when the car has been left overnight.

When the car fires up i can smell unburned diesel. more in line with leaking injector seals.

il need to have a proper look through the thread as i have vag com. how can i use this to identify the injectors being at fault?

cheers
Garry

Hi All,

Sorry about the delay in updating, been a bit hectic.

Still have the problem and since it's been really cold it's been worse.....starting sometimes getting difficult...and yesterday when I started it I got the brakes sign up ont he dash and the beeping....sometimes does this when it doesn't start or coughs to get started up (very occasionally)

I am going to get a quote for my injector seals.

Only things is, if I am going to get all that taken out, it's almost pointless not having the injectors cleaned and tested at the same time!

I could spend money on all he injector seals and then still have the same issue, as the issue is a dodgy injector!

~In anser about glow plugs - yup genuine bosch a year ago......battery is about 75% and I am thinking about doing it.....might well do that first.....

Just out of curiosity does your temp gauge work fine? Does it get to temp 90 degrees after a good drive?

I've just read this
''Puff of smoke on startup = coolant temp sender.''
On this thread http://uk-audis.net/forums/t/2839.aspx

Worth a look for 20 quid?

Have you checked the voltage on your battery? Brake fail light on startup is symptom of the battery on its way out. Might be giving low voltage on glow plugs too...
New battery reads 12.7v, if its 12.2 then its low....

I got the brake warning on start up recently too but my laptop has died so can't really research it or scan the car, i dont have an original manual so cant check the warning symbols either......I used the check function on the dash and all seems OK so i'm guessing it might be a warning to drive slow due to low temps??......or have I made that up?? Anyone got any other ideas on why we got the red brake light very briefly on start up when cold?
makes sense to give the injectors a going over if they're out. I will if I end up doing them.
Sent from my phone with fat fingers, small buttons and lots of patience!

Well known fault, cured by replacing the battery. Check the voltage on a cold morning before you start the car. When i had around 12.2v i would get the brake warning light on. Euro car parts have 15% off batteries at the moment...

Cheers PJ. Kwik Fit tested the battery at 86% recently albeit once the car was warmed up and if i'm honest i've no idea how this percentage relates to cold voltage measurements. I don't have the means to test the battery myself but i know there's a 2.5tdi battery discussion on here recently so I'll give that a read before deciding to get a new one. Cheers for the info on ECP. Appreciated.

Another update peeps!

Had the pressure checked through the tandem pump to see if worn seals on injectors...

no pressure drop and holding fine.......

Had the battery checked.......75% on the proper German meter thing that puts it under load...
Interesting though that others have still replaced at that level....

Might do that and buy some more glowies again!

Warmer weather its SO much better again, still smokes mind, but not jerky on start up!

I got a Bosch S4 battery for £64. It's not made any difference to the smoking but I couldn't take the risk of it dying on me so replaced it as a precaution. I was getting the red brake light warning on cold mornings and I cant afford to lose a days work.
eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace
I haven't had the jerky starts symptoms, just an embarrasing amount of white smoke.
My new neighbour is an Audi tech and says it's nothing to worry about.......and that high mileage Diesels just don't like the cold......still doesn't give me confidence though.
Probably not much help but thought i'd add it in anyway.

So.....my Audi is now in for injectors out, ultrasonic cleaning, new bolts and seals!

Will know in a week or so if things have improved......will keep you updated as we go!

Interesting times...i hope I don't need any new injectors :S

This will be the MAJOR deciding factor!!!

Injectors out and clean and test and seals made no difference...still just as bad in winter again...

using non supermarket fuel has helped a little but still not great...given up caring now! LOL!

A friend of mine had same issues on his navara.
Took ages to diagnose, spent a few hundred to finding out.

Nissan dealers wanted £3k because its the timing chains!

Took to diesel specialist.
= wrong fuel was filter fitted.

Just read the whole thread with no result...
It's like reading a story and waiting for happy ending.

Mate done the same thing.

We've just bought some matches.
See if that helps. :)

Mine still chucks out a load of smoke on a cold start. I've learnt to live with it, no other symptoms. The wife waits in the house until it's cleared coz she's embarrassed!

So finally got to the bottom of it - chocolate Camshaft syndrome! New camshaft, tappets and bearings all sorted!

anyone else having cold start issues id take a look at my symptoms - took 50k to finally come to fruition though!

Since the cold weather has arrived, my car is slow to crank when it's been left overnight. Fine the rest of the day though regardless of outside temperature.
Doesn't seem to smoke at all during starting or normal running, but runs lumpy for 10-15 seconds once started.
I also get the brake warning symbol come on the LED display while cranking if it's really cold, even though I changed the battery yesterday and it's showing a healthy 13V.

I've got the car booked in for a new thermostat and temp sensor as it's not reaching 90 unless I have the heaters turned off.

My car currently has a 3rd party warranty on it from the dealer, so if there's anything I can get replaced on the warranty to cure my symptoms before it runs out then great!

Mine is a B6 1.9TDI 130

I've got a multimeter already, so I've been checking the battery voltage. Right after the car is turned off it shows 13V, by the following morning it's showing around 12.5-12.6ish. Do I need to do the test for parasitic battery drain or is this normal?

And the stat and temp sensor will both be OEM when I get those changed in the new year.

I have the same engine mate, and the lunpiness is sort of normal, but it may be beneficial to put some new heater plugs in, I didn't this year, but will next winter.

How does it run when warm?

I have fully charged my old battery and put it in the boot so I can parallel it with the new one tomorrow morning just to make sure it's not slow to start because something is draining it overnight.

Heater plugs are cheap enough so I'll get those changed anyway.

When it's warm, or even when it's cold but has been run within the last 4 hours or so, it runs like a dream.

Mine isnt sorted either....camshaft didn't fix it....worse again overnight ....Same issue as you sprinter....if you sort it let me know...I had a battery test and it was fine but you maybe onto something here with it being drained.

I don't get any smoke as far as I can see, just slow to start then lumpy idle for 15 seconds.

If you haven't got one already Funkyfin, might be worth investing in a multimeter so you can keep tabs on battery voltage over a period of time.
