Tyres noise on 19" tyres HELP!

Hi Guys

I have a set of 19" BBS CK's on my A3 sportback with 235/35/19 Falken 452 tyres and although the ride quality seems to have not changed much the noise from the road has. When I first fitted the wheels I actually thought that there was a wheel bearing on it's way out.

What I wanted to know is if this is normal for these wheels/tyres and if buying different tyres will make a difference?

Any help from people with 19" fitted to there A3's is much appreciated.

Not sure if it helps you much but I went from Conti Sport 2's on 225/40/18s to the 452's and didn't notice any difference in road noise so I don't think they are a particularly noisy tyre.

Yeah i'm thinking that going from 225/40/18 to 235/35/19 is what's made the difference. Just want to see what other Audi owners have the same experience as me.

Strange others report them as quiet as Falken 452's are well known to be one of the noisiest tyres around...so swap them out and see if problem goes away.

The A3 is susceptible to tyre and road noise so any even slightly noisy tyre will be amplified. Continental seem to have a good rep for quiet tyres.

this noise you say sounds like a drone, right??
do you know the history of those tyres??
the reason i ask is that i had an idiot guy from
a tyre shop highly over inflated my tyre to 45psi.
by the time i reduced the tyre pressure back to 32psi
i started to get this drone and thought it was the wheel
bearings, so i ignored it till i sold the rims & tyres to this guy in wales.
the guy got in touch with me 3 weeks later to complane about a drone
noise which wasent on his car prior to fitting my rims & tyres.
he took the car to demon tweeks who confirmed that the tyre was highly over
inflated at some stage and thats where the noise originated from.

in the mean time when i put my new set of rims plus new tyres the drone myteriously
dissapeared.

There must be something wrong somewhere as a lot of people say the Falkens are not that bad tyre noise wise.

its was just through a process of elimination.
once the offending tyre was removed and replaced with a brand new one then
the problem dissapeared.
bering in mind that the tyre was Nankang and Continental sport.

you havent answered my question.
do you know the history of the tyres on the 19 inch rims.
were they used by someone else prior to you???
its possible that the wrong tyre pressure was used
and this could be the root cause of your DRONE noise.

from my notes above Demon Tweeks in Wales confirmed this.

I find the Falkens get worse with age. Very quiet when new, pretty loud when worn. But then again i think all tyres do this to a certain extent!

I would not complain about their noise levels though and this is across a 350z, mazda 3 MPS and a megane R26.

I guess you get what you pay for, Falken are cheap so a little more noise should be expected so I guess its time to turn up the stereo or move onto a better brand, I can't see 235 v 225 making much of a difference.

You could try a process of elimination if you still have your oem alloys by replacing one at a time to see if the noise persists, a bit of a pain but could give you the answer.

I don't know the history of the tyres. I got them from a member on here who got them form another member on here.

They may have been over inflated but they've done be over inflated by me.

I may need to just try new tyres and see if that makes a difference. I do have the OEM wheels but they need new tyres too.

of course they are going to be louder you have got bigger wheels with a thinner side walls and less rubber !!! pretty obvious isnt it ?

I did expect this but as I have to drive an 80 mile round trip to collect and drop off my son I still expect a certain level or comfort when driving. I was fully aware that when the new wheels went on I would get a drop in comfort levels but It was so obvious that I thought a wheel bearing was on its way out.

The tyres came with the wheels so I think the only thing now is for me to buy a few new tyres and see if that makes a difference. Now what to get??

Conti sport contact have the best noise levels according to reviews, the a3/golf/octavia platform suffers from greater than average road noise, seen on octavia forums people complaining of this problem, think someone has mentioned above the A3 is susceptible to road noise

The more I read about the Contis the mroe I'm thinking about going for these next time on the A3. I recall having some on my BMW when I frst got it and remember it being quieter that it is now.

The don't seem to get good reviews in the auto express tyre test.

stay away from bridgestone then as they are very noisey but last for ****** ever ! usually use tyres in 12 months got 2 and a half years out of them . was well worth putting up with the noise lol . goodyear efficency grip tyres are very quiet with good comfort .
