Self levelling headlights???? Please help

Please! does anybody have a clue as to why my usually awesome HiD lights seem now to automatically after turning on but seem to end up pointing down as if i am carrying loads of weight. There is no provision to manually adjust so can i presume their is a fault?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Fairly common problem... the motors for the self adjusters are the culprits... typically fixed by replacing the motor on the affected headlamp... you can take the motor apart and clean the level potentiometer (there is a guide on here somewhere) but its not always successful and you may end up having to replace the motor anyway...

Resetting the headlights is done through VCDS software or a dealer... there is manual adjustment to fine tune as the software adjustment is to sync the motors so the lights move the at the same time not to adjust where they point..

Having a working self levelling system and headlamp washers is an MOT requirement for Xenon/HID headlamps from Jan 2012

happened to me recently, ended up being a broken rear sensor, the tie bar that runs from the rear arm had snapped the little plastic arm on the sensor, fixed by drilling a little hole in the remaining palstic arm and re attaching the 2 with a cable tie, been fine again for weeks

I had what Rogo says happen with mine. Unfortunately my sensor was beyond repair and had to buy a new one in 2010. After 6 years of living with the lights being random, it's nice to now have headlights that consistently point at the right level!

haha i used to be like that.. id live with stuff not working properly for ages, then id end up getting it all up together and sorted a week before i got rid of it!! lol

Just checked the bill and it was £60.85 plus vat in summer 2010. I also thing there is a mounting bracket that you might need, depending upon the condition of what is on the car. Mine was completely destroyed when my Forge adjustable tie bar snapped.

TBH when my lights didn't level I was put off trying to get them fixed as I thought it was the motors in the lights themselves (i.e. expensive!) Had I know it was just the sensor that was playing up I'd have fixed it sooner.

mine keep playing up also, every time i turn them on they would level out then as soon as i drive one points at the flour lol, i always wondered how to fix them, but for temp i turned them on to level them out then unplugged both of them.
been like that for the last 2 years lol

If one drops to the floor then its normally just the motor thats the problem... the self levelling system is on the K-line too so will throw fualt codes... if the self levelling system has a problem then a scan should show them up and give you a better idea on whats going on...

One under the passenger side front wheel arch (bolted to inner arch and connected to the lower wishbone) and the other at the rear bolted to the rear subframe and connected to the lower tie bar for the rear suspension again on the passenger side...

cheers for that tuffty will have a look at the weekend and see if it shows up anything, as long as I remember to plug them back in.

Sorry to revive an old thread but .....
When I had my coil overs fitted. The muppet fitter has broken the self leveller on the rear axle.
Didn't bother to tell me though. Just tie wrapped it up.
I have spotted it and want to replace it.

Does anyone know the part number for it please?

Just wanted to check they are the same across the different models. Looking at a TT one now.

No not worth the grief. Just wont use him again.
Found a number of **** ups he made.

does anyone know the vcds procedure for resetting the lights?

Im sure mine do not auto adjust

they dont point down but deffo do not auto adjust... like my M3 does

The adjustment should now be learned.

Don't forget to check/clear fault codes afterwards.
