Basically what these guys are trying to show you is hundreds of people have asked the same question before so the answer has been made a sticky.

Bottom line is, buy OEM xenon lights and nothing else otherwise you will constantly blow your wiper motor.

Also, as from 1st Jan this year all MOT tests will require cars fitted with xenon headlights to have auto-levelling equipment and headlamp washers.

Just go for some whiter halogens (legal and max 55 watt) like Osram Nightbreakers or similar. Again loads of threads to read on here.

Asked time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time again, save yourself the problems and don't bother.

What about an LED alternative? Think T8UPS provides a solution....

Not for headlights he doesn't just side lights, number plate lights and interior bulbs.

LED headlights are not yet legal for road use in the UK

The R8 V10 has LED lights which includes the headlights Mike, i think there must be rules to having such lights though, like Xenon you must have auto levelling, headlamp washers and projector lamps.

Point taken Aiden - but they must be type approved in that case.

I was really referring to retro-fit alternatives to halogen or xenon bulbs rather than OEM equipment ! :icon_thumright:

If fact both LED and Xenon headlights are, according to the Construction and Use Regulations, illegal for use in the UK. But the European Type Approval overrides the C+R Regs thus making them legal. But this is only the case if your particular type of vehicle holds Type Approval for the LED or Xenon headlights, the auto levelling and headlamp washers and they are exactly the same as the OEM units that were fitted when type approval was granted. Any aftermarket kits do not meet this requirement and are therefore illegal.

For the current crop of LED DRLs (as seen on new A3/A5 etc, some Citreons, Porsches, Mercs etc) I'm really surprised they are type approved as they are more blinding that any dipped beam and turn to extremely blinding in dusk conditions if drivers don't turn on their lights properly. I don't understand why the new ruling isn't just essentially dipped beam at all times like certain US states and most of Scandinavia have for years.
