I suspect my rear diff may well be of the way out. Well, more specifically the Haldex clutch pack.

The other day, I nearly s**t my pants when driving down the A38 in the wet, I put my boot in in 6th to overtake and the front wheels lit up.

So that would be the Haldex not working then... ******.

VAG COM gave me one I've not seen before, but altogether bad. 'Haldex Clutch - Mechanical Mulfuction'.

However I drove it later and it actually was fine and dandy - Haldex working fine.

However over the past few days, when booting it in second when really working the Haldex, the thing is producing bangs and feels like it's slipping.

Anyone know if just the clutch pack can be replaced??

To be fair, a new diff and clutch pack isn't the end of the world at £130 + del...

Thoughts?

Damn car is falling apart.

Im glad I'm not the only one, yesterday i had a massive vibration followed by fwd. 2nd time now, but last time it fixed itself.
I'm really starting to hate this lame 4wd.

I was looking on the bay about 6 months ago for diff and/or haldex units and I was expecting to pay 200-250 quid. Which is a fair bit of dollar considering how old the units can be.

Have you considered doing a diff and haldex oil change? That's what im doing first, I also have a spare controller in my garage luckily.

I've looked into this & it's not a nice job to replace the clutches in the diff.
The clutches are only £120ish from TPS.

I think the best way is to get a second hand diff as I did & I was very luck as the person I got it off didn't know anything about it & I also got the haldex controller aswell & only paid £40 for Both ;)

There is a complete haldex/diff at Bill's mate... its Danes but not sure what the plan was for it now he has sold his S3 on...

Was done within the last 10K mate sadly. Wish it was that to be fair, not an expensive fix.

Rear diffs second hand seem to have plummeted in price though. Example: Audi S3 Rear Diff 2001 | eBay

Just wondering how much power the Haldex can take.
He used you as evidence of it taking alot of punishment and still going.

They are fairly resilient to be fair but age/mileage seems to be taking its toll... mines next then lol...

There has been a few more posts recently for the (seemingly) normal haldex issue of the diff locking at low speeds which is typically related to the lack of regular oil changes... haldex servicing is oil change every 20k and filter every 40k but this is probably based on a std power car with ESP on most of the time so is unlikely the haldex clutch pack is getting much abuse... a remapped car with ESP off and spirited driving is more likely to tax the haldex more and I have started changing my haldex oil every 10k...

I do as much AWD wheel spin as possible because it's cool. :). That's what has shagged mine guaranteed.

If it was me id open the ******** one up too and find out what on earth fails, because everytjing surrounding haldex seems to be a mystery and complete guess work.

P.s. where the hell is dane anyway?

Welly, please strip down your old haldex for us and get loads of pic.
Or send it to me and I'll do it. :)

I got no idea how the haldex works (Runs off to look at youtube) but can you not weld it up or make it constant AWD or something?

EDIT:=- Looking at Daves link. Interesting. Thanks.

i always wondered when this would happen, another 1 up for the "real" quattro boys lol

it would not surprise me if you could fit motorcycle clutch plates in it ! it's generally dealing with a max of about 130lb ft on your car.

i'd get the plates changed instead of putting on a second hand unit, you'll find yourself in the same situation sooner than you think if you dont, you may even be able to get some higher rated plates to deal with your extra torque, surely plates from the rs3 haldex would fit?

I broke te clutch pack in my diff trying to show off to some kids in a saxo. Made myself look a bit of a bellend.
Really easy to change the diff surprisingly, there's enough slack in the rear shafts to enable them to be unbolted on the diff end and drop down, so need to even take the wheels off.

Ooooh I like the sounds of that. That's made me happy. Does it just unbolt and drop down?

On a more positive note welly, katy perry might be single soon.....

I know mate, AND Katherine Jenkins as well!!!

A source close to the singer tells
HollywoodLife.com
that Katy, 27, is “absolutely devastated” that her marriage didn’t work out

Ahhh well, I'm sure I can make her feel MUCH better....

What a start to the new year. I now have a choice...

On new years eve I had a massive vibration in 2nd followed by 0wd.

Now I've got a 4 speed A3 ;)

Bad luck wellyboots, but you've got more power than everyone, and you've spent less money than just about anyone else, so I thought you're doing pretty ****** well!
