2.0 TDI oil pump / balance shaft failure?

ok so im still concerned with my a4 2.0 tdi code bpw and have just taken out a planinum warranty with warranty wise. my car has full audi service history and 56000miles on the clock. acording to my warranty i can take the car in with and suspected problems and have it investigated and anything replaced if needed. im gonna just go down audi and say i want my oil pump looking at as i think its on its way out due to what info ive found out and see if i can get a replacement before it fails, bit of a long shot i guess but got to be better then it actually failing right? any thoughts??

I got mine changed over last year as I didn't like driving a car I knew would fail at some point. I timed it at the same time the cambelt needed doing so saved a bit of cash.

Todays date is the 7th December 2011 and in this weeks copy of AUTO EXPRESS on either page 26, 27 or may be 28 ( I am writing this from memory ) there is a few paragraphs about a VW Passat owner who has been waiting 8 weeks for a replacement Balance Shaft/Oil Pump module and something about a back log of 150 ( ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY ) on order for the VW Passat alone.
The journalist is asking for sufferers of the poor delivery e-mailing him as VW are saying only 50 are needed and not 150.
If this sounds garbled your correct , remember I am writing this from memory and only putting it up on the forum to keep you all posted about this related problem.

PS My Audi dealer called tonight to say my car will be ready for collection tomorrow ( and to relieve me of a few thousand pounds ! ).
I will get back with a report on the cost breakdown for the repairs together with what parts have been replaced etc

Back later.............

Hi Paul, did you post a few years back when i had my own problem?, if I recall you had just bought car and had read the threads and was therefore concerned but as no rattle it was not an issue then. If so what was mileage then, and what is it now?

I am still scunnered with VAG, and the more i read of people like you, the more ****** off i get. VAG know there is an issue but ignore, I am also ****** of at watchdog and press, how many people need to write in before someone takes on the story!!!

I wonder if nay one has had the balls to take them to small claims court?? Perhaps we all pay £10 and do a joint action and take VAG on in court?

Up for that Weggie...Paul B7 - nowt personnal meant here, not sure if i have missed something but how comes you have your part in but the general concensus seems to be no parts 'till Xmas,at earliest??? I am deff interested in the part numbers fitted though. Me and the wife took a gutting decision last night to agree on the fact that if the 'fourth' shaft that goes into our S -line is version 3 then we will cross fingers, keep the car, hope and wait....if however it is version 2 then the car will have to go.And we only drove it for prob 500 mile between us. VAG have certainly ruined what should be a superb motor. The posting above regarding the passat is a bit of a worry though...

Hello Weggie, yes it was me, car had 43k on and now has 68k. I wrote at he time I had a boss with circa 240k on his BLB with no issues and I still stand by that today.
As for filing a small claims court action I have already put "the wheels in motion" and will revert at the appropriate juncture with an update, now however is not that time and I will not be writing anymore on this action until it has been concluded, wish me well !

Audi UK always said the parts would be here at the end of November and they arrived last week, first week in December. One Bulgarian member was advised his parts wouldn't be available until week 51 i.e Xmas week.

Paul it was on page 27 VW has told Auto Expree the parts where dispatched 2nd Dec. Auto Express has asked for people waiting to e-mail them with how long you have been waiting the e-mail address is Jon_Morgan@dennis.co.uk

Many have threatened but only one person that I am aware of has put their money where their mouth is. I cannot say more but there is a Court date. Several things could happen, they offer a deal to make it all go away and they keep their gob shut or they employ sh*t-hot lawyers that would dismiss a case (lawyer vs. layman) or the person wins.

However, it will be easy for Audi to say they have sold hundreds of thousands of these models but only 100 people are on record with a problem.

Thats it, car back today and running silky smooth and very, very quiet.
Total bill ( Main dealer with 50% labour discount and 20% parts discount ) including VAT came to £2051.80.
This included Balance Shaft Housing, Repair Kit, New Sump , Gear, Bolts,Gaskets, Oil, Water Pump, Timing Belt Kit,Oil and the A/C regassing AND NEW bearing shells as these were reportedly showing signs of wear as not only was the chain rattling but the drive to the oil pump had started to slip?

Remember my engine had not failed and this work was being done as a preventative measure as it had started to rattle.
The costs also include for replacing the water pump and timing belt etc which I decided to have done while the front of the car was off,i.e to save a little money on the long term. No I am not wealthy but I had set some money aside to cover what I had planned to have done at 80k (and not at 68k the engine has now reached).

I will write back later once I have pulled the part numbers off the invoice for you to decide if this is a new design ( i.e a third itteration ) or simply the current geared version ( remember that the third and "improved " version has never been confirmed, just rumoured from a Bulgarian source to be on its way by December this year).

For the record there was another 05 2.0 tdi Avant owner in collecting his car with the very same issues at the time I collected mine .
Not really such a common problem is it ?. THANKS VAG, Japanese next time !

Here are the part numbers of the MAIN items used in the repair to my BLB engine.
Those of you who have had the repair done can advise if we have the 2nd design of a gear driven balance shaft (was chain driven )and oil pump or a new Third design ( just a rumour at this stage , see my earlier posting to the forum).

V03G 103 295 AL 041666/Housing at £769.30p

V03G 198 119 Repair Kit at £154

V03G 103 603h Oil Pan at £92.01p

V03G 103 212D Gear at £31.60p

Whats the verdict, is this the second design or the rumoured third design ?

The parts listed on my conversion were:

03G 103 295 AL - balancer shaft module with oil pump - 748.78
03G 103 603 AH - oil sump with opening for oil level sensor - 84.94
03G 105 212 D - timing gear - crankshaft - 28.58
03G 103 305 C - drive gear - 20.72
N 911 213 01 - hexagon head bolt (combi) - 2.04 x 4
038 103 085 E - oil seal - 15.27
N 909 775 02 - multi-point socket head bolt with collar - 1.72 x 2
N 911 213 01 - hexagon head bolt (combi) - 2.04 x 4 - don't know why this is on twice, maybe a mistake
D 176 404 A2 - silicone sealant - 15.44

Total - 919.53 + VAT = 1080.45 parts only.

Hello Wrath,
The parts inventory on my invoice covers two pages and the Main parts I have listed correspond with the same part numbers on your list so I am assuming we have the same conversion.

Like you I had my repair done at NE Audi (Teesside Audi) but this is the first time I have heard of the repair necessitating new bearing shells ,perhaps an over zealous mechanic ?

Paul

Hi Paul. I know you will have newer parts as they were amended December 2010 and I had mine redone in April 2010. I think Teesside Audi get the same mechanic to do this sort of work as, they said, "he enjoys it". Only someone with ETKA can tell if you have the latest bits but I suspect you will have the latest parts particularly if they have been on order.

I dearly hope my colleague has success as this problem is spiralling out of control.

Interesting list there guys.Just to add for comparrison,our shaft that was fitted in August (that has now failed but due to incorrect fitment,NOT the part itself...or so we are led to believe...) carries the same part number and same price as yours Paul.My list from August;

03G103305C GEAR £22.30

KO15607XS CAM BELT KIT £126.19

TOTAL WITH VAT £2145.54.

Water pump had already been changed. Paul - what is the 'repair kit' ? Is this the new crank shells?

Regarding then this '3rd generation shaft'...in short we have 3 shafts here fitted between April and now,all carrying the same part number. If Pauls shaft is revised, would it carry a different part number,or remain the same???

The latest with our motor is as follows ...After reading that Paul B7 is getting sorted, the wife first rung our Indy garage guy to ask what's happening. He replied 'Yet another week'. The wife not being to chuffed at this informs him others are being sorted. He couldn't believe it as Audi are telling him 'no shafts yet 'guv' . Paul,i take it your dealer is Teeside Audi - our guy would like to contact them...?

Fuming wife then rings Exeter Audi. They cannot explain why some cars are being repaired. To quote from that really rude one that answers the phone ' I wouldn't believe anything you read on there (here)'.She would not give any reason why our car is not being repaired. When the wife mentioned that we are 'joining the queue' of people writing to Watchdog, the 'one' replied 'if thats what you want to do then by all means carry on'. The patronising 'one'.

Hello Trumpyman,

Taking apart your post and picking out the salient points I respond as follows;

1) I haven't a clue what the repair kit is on my invoice i.e part number V03G 198 119 but it is NOT the bearing shells as these are all identified separately on my invoice.

2) The parts listed in my posting 490 are only the MAIN parts as there are two pages of parts on the invoice and I only saw the need to advise the MAIN parts. Nobody wants to see bolts and sealant etc ,right ?

3) Audi Teesside were also having trouble getting a delivery date for the parts until I intervened and called Audi Customer Care and wrote to them a couple of times, each time copying the Customer Service Manager at Audi Teesside. I really believe by taking this pro active approach to expediting their quite useless supply chain that Audi Uk secured the release of myparts in advance of others?
The number for Audi Customer Care is 0800 699 888 and the chap I dealt with called Dan McCabe. Remember these people are paid to be nice and in general trained to get rid of nuisances so you have to be firm but polite when dealing with them and you need to be persistent, keep calling and writing to them or NOTHING will happen.

4) I also believe I got my parts and hence the car fixed because I used an Audi garage to source the parts and to fix my car. An Independant will not have the same "pull" as the main dealer so you may well be waiting for the parts for some considerable time?

5) Has your Independant done this repair before? the Audi Dealer I used has a proven track record in sorting this mess out and the repair is not a simple task. My local independants didn't want to know and one Reputable Engine Builder wanted a LOT MORE than my local Audi franchise to make the repair. Audi dealers are not always more expensive and it pays to check.

I wish you the best of luck in getting you car parts and having them fitted at a reasonable cost and please keep the forum posted with developments.

Hi Paul - i sense an anger in your number 2 response - it may be me as im touchy at the best of times but i have not set out to upset
anybody on here ! I just thought by listing my entire bill it MAY help others ...I am still wondering what the 'repair ' kit is...

Ok so i have some 'latest'.

Our Indy garage guy rang us yesterday morning(saturday 10th). Bear in mind the following ;

We bought our A4 from the said Indy.

The balance shaft had been changed just prior to our purchase by a seperate Indy,NOT ours.

Are you following.

1880 miles later (not many of them are ours) the audi signature 'WTN' (whats that noise) appears.

WE book the A4 into TRURO AUDI for a checkover. They confirm BALANCER SHAFT and TURBO failure.

We ring our Indy to report bad news, just as well we have 3months warranty.

Car gets trailered from home back up to the Indy, who, instead of returning to the OTHER Indy in LONDON who did the job, takes it to Audi Exeter because he wants the job done correctly. They confirm BALANCE SHAFT is on its way out but the TURBO is fine .The car has sat there now for 6 weeks and 5 days. The turbo issue still to be resolved. i.e. TWO seperate dealerships giving differing opinions - oh dear, not clever.

Hope you are still following!

We (us and the Indy ) are now on first name terms and getting bored of the Audi board game called 'Thats Life Jim'.

So back to the 'update' - our Indy rings AUDI UK to make an official complaint. They won't deal with him because his name is not on the logbook. (even though it his his responsibility to sort this as it is within his warranty time????!!!!)
So he rings us,more or less pleading that to get anywhere WE have to ring because WE are the owners!!!??? WTF???

So the wife rings Audi UK,and this is the basics ( no bolts or sealants)

'What is the problem' eh,you.'Where is my car???' They could not give any reason for the delay. This is NOT a common problem we were told. But the delay is down to a lot of 'SUDDEN FAILURES' The wife states our case, the guy sounds 'shocked' and, apparently,we are now in 'Barrymore' territory,we are now a HOTSPOT (Top,middle or bottom) i think 'bottom end'. We are now a 'priority'

AUDI UK are also, alledgedly opening a case as to why it has taken so long,AND as to why we have TWO different opinions on the Turbo, which i will not let drop. WE HAVE BEEN PROMISED A CALL BY THE END OF TUESDAY.

Any further news will be posted. Anyone not having any joy, ring AUDI UK,the EARTH WILL BE PROMISED....

ive done several of these repair on these engines now. its not a difficult job for a seasoned mechanic.

again i call "bs" on a blb making 240k without being took apart atleast twice.

and dont use longlife oil!

Hello Trumpyman,

Audi UK Customer Services promised to call met at least on two separate occassions and they never did. I would suggest you make the point of calling them and up the pressure? At this point in time there are VAG customers with this parts supply problem running Passats (2005 onwards) with balance shaft issues that are reporting waiting times of 8 weeks plus so don't think you are alone, the VAG supply chain is a mess !

Paul B

what a nightmare! ive decided im going to get these parts for my car and have them fitted an a local friendly mechanic and have it booked in as as a normal warranty claim. ive got a good third party warranty and i know the mechanic well. my b7 is on 56,000miles now with a full audi service history. from what ive been reading the parts have recently been revised correct?
is there a part number for the new oil pump balance shaft assembly? im happy to wait as my car is still fine

I would suggest not to *ring* Audi UK, but *write* to them as there is a written record forcing a response. The escalation route would be next to the Customer Services Manager and if that doesn't work to the CEO of Audi UK and Audi De. I believe the UK CEO has recently changed.

As mentioned previously, don't go in with all guns blazing as you'll get nowhere. At the end of the day, the customer service advisors aren't the ones to blame so winding them up is going to do no favours.

.

For what its worth my tact was to call Customer Services and then follow up the call with a confirmatory letter ( see my post #495) . This worked for me as I got my parts after five weeks ( still a very long time to wait) which may have been luck, but I would like to think my "micro management " helped truncate what for me was fast becoming a lengthy and unacceptable experience.
GOOD luck and keep the forum posted .

More latest, although nothing of interest really...Had our Indy ring me this morning, asking me to ring Audi UK re our conversation a couple of days ago...i replied the wife rang them on Saturday blah blah so no comunication there then.He was off to re-ring Audi to tell them we HAD rung on Saturday yawn...

Next thing i know my phone is going again...'This is Ben from AUDI UK...' WOW they are ringing me! (no doubt reverse charge).

By what i gathered Saturday's conversation doesn't exist, different guy, blah blah delay tactics delay tactics had to go through it all over again. It was confirmed no parts until the 17th December. He knew nothing of the Turbo farce so,apparently 'it will be looked into'. I told him i do not want the car back without either a) new turbo b) in writing to say all is well. I will be getting a call within 24 hours of that call,apparently.....

Probably the wrong post but kind of linked and the most viewed...murran...long life oil...Have been picking up bits and pieces regarding this but nothing conclusive.

Have picked up that VAG vehicles 'prefer' their own oil. So a week or so after buying ours the wife pops into local motor factor for a liter just as a safeguard that we have some in case of a top up being needed.Didn't have the car long enough to need it.Having looked at it tonight after noting your post, they sold us at £13.00 for a liter, 'LONG LIFE ' oil.

So can anyone tell me what oil they use.

Am i being advised that if i ever get EO05 returned, that my first job is up on my ramps, drain the long life that Audi would of filled it with and replace it with???

And i thought, foolishly, that finally making the step 'up' to Audi i could put all my tools to rest.

Well we are not going to be getting our audi back. 16 days of driving an audi, and that was it...

We did NOT get our phone call back. We rung them again yesterday and they won't deal with us,they will only deal with the dealer, which is completely opposite to how it was on saturday.

Wife rings Audi Exeter this morning,'the one' would not talk to her.So she rings Audi UK , only to be told 'your case is now closed'. EH???? Does that mean the car is at home in the drive, all up and running??? So she rings our Indy and tells him that if that part is not here on the 17th as has been ,ahem, promised, then we will have our money back.

Couple hours later, indy rings up and says money will be returned,NO PARTS UNTIL THE 29TH NOW. How many dates is that now? I smell a stinking rat and if i didn't know better i would say it may have something to do with me kicking up regarding the turbo farce between the two garages.Pull yourself together Audi,do the honourable thing and admit you ARE hopeless.

So i am car hunting again, nevermind the £500 odd quid and all the hassle that this ridiculous saga has cost us. No idea what to buy,i must be mad to think 'maybe a 1.9...' I will keep an eye on this posting, see how you all get on.The very best of luck.It will be interesting if anyone gets there parts before today's latest date. So much for being a 'Hotspot'.

Well after much discussion the following day between the wife and myself, and taking into account many factors we decided not to throw in the towel and stick it out. So as of yesterday the wife got a call from 'Janine' at AUDI UK and she very politely informed the wife that they simply do not know when the shafts will be here. And according to her there is NO modified shaft,it is the same one.

interesting comment from the audi uk person. i take it this is the balance shaft assembly she is talking about.? the rounded hex shaft drive i carry around with me, to educate prospective audi/vag buyers, is hollowed out and i believe the newer shafts are solid centered...that to me constitutes a modification of this part at least....??

You have to take what customer services say with a pinch of salt. They told me a bit of technical guff that blatently wasn't true. As soon as you escalate to CEO level, that's when you get noticed.

MearnsA4 - your comment is way more interesting.I was not aware of what you have stated. As you say, that sounds like a mod. So not putting you on the spot are you suggesting that the hex drive issue is no longer a problem?? I have big concerns that even after the car is returned, the confidence will still be low due to the fact,as i understand it from earlier postings, the pump drive is still prone to breakage?? Which is why i have been disscussing with a few knowledgable friends about modifying the bottom end ourselves i.e.dry sumping or welding the drive. He has another idea which i don't know yet. I just want some kind of confidence in it ! A chap in Wigan received his shaft yesterday...

These issues ( failed oil pumps/balance shafts ) are now appearing in the Skoda Superb 2.0tdi models.
I have a neighbour who runs a taxi firm who says his last car failed at 70,000 and his first one at just over 50,000.
Apparently there are issues with the clutches and DMF units as well, where will this all end ?

Hi Trumpyman, from reading this thread sounds like you are having a bit of a saga to say the least.. I am no mechanic or engineer and so am not qualified to suggest that this is not, or at least now less of, an issue with the parts replaced…but let’s hope so. Personally even after having the shaft/pump replaced by granite city audi I have low confidence in the car and very rarely drive it i.e. job was done in May 2011 and car has done 3,000 miles since. I have a 10 year old merc that takes the main millage hit even although this should be a Sunday drive vehicle, lol! With issues like oil pump/balance shaft drive, egr valve, air con, (my a4 has suffered with all these) diesel injectors and dmf to name the ones I am aware off I could perhaps be forgiven for being some what cynical about the likelihood of the car keeping going trouble free in future.. noticed last week that there was ice inside the back window and it appears there is a leak some were letting water in, far too much for condensation, what a great car this is....where will it all end indeed?? Good luck with the planned modifications though and keep us posted..

More interesting comments from you Paul...mearns A4,low confidence you don't say...this is why i do not wish to get shot of my 13 year old Vectra, or my 36 year old Triumph...Really have zero confidence in this A4 and i feel really really sad to admit it.As stated in earlier posts i think it is a superb car in idea, but in reality ...a waste of space.

Our latest ...Our Indy contacts Audi regarding others getting shafts...he is informed our shaft will be here on 6TH FEBRUARY... he goes mental...so now our shaft is due on MONDAY,19TH DEC..fitting on the Tues /Weds so the wife on a high, assuming sorted by the 22nd,until i reminded her about the Turbo issue...Aren't Audi's wonderfull .

Hello Trumpyman,

The Audi timecard ( at my main dealers here in the NE) for the oil pump/balance shaft repair is 9.0hrs and the actual I was charged for was 8.0 hours so theoretically this repair could be done in a day. Now bearing in mid that when stripped mine had reportedly excessive wear to the bearing shells I had these replaced at the same time as the repair was being made ( this added a few more hours to the timecard ). In total the Audi main dealer had my car more like three days and this is from people who do this repair on a regular basis ( although they won't admit as much). Guess what I am trying to say is I think it would not be unreasonable for your "Indy" to take three maybe four days to make the repair so I would assume he will have the car for the week as this to me seems a more realistic time under the circumstances ( Xmas parties, cold workshops etc..........). Now look on the plus side, you will have the parts a lot quicker than some of the Passat owners who are on an 8 week wait as I understand it to be at the current time.
Once the Turbo is fixed ( are you sure its bust ?) then you should have a firm basis for a car that will last for many years to come.
Keep us posted and we all hope it goes well for you .

Ummm ...our Indy isn't doing the repair,Vincents Audi (Exeter) are doing the repair, through our Indy. We HAVE been waiting 8 weeks,as of tommorrow. And no,i'm not sure if my turbo is bust, thats the whole point. It SEEMED ok to me,but Carrs Audi (Truro),which is where i took it for the initial noise wrote in the report that it is not good. Vincents however, told my Indy that it was ok. Until I rang Vincents to ask them to put that in writing - they declined. THAT is my issue with the turbo - the only thing i have in writing from ANY audi garage is that my turbo is f****d.

Unbelievably the wife received the call today confirming the part is in and the car will be under the knife tommorrow.

good luck with the repair and the turbo.... i'm sure not all audi models are bad, you just have to carefully do your homework when planning to buy one. my brother has a 14 year old a4 1.9TDI and just went through mot with only a seized front brake caliper to sort. pity my a4 at 4.5 years is not as good..

Hi All,
I have just found this useful thread as now know I'm not the only cheesed off guy out there!.
I have just used the useful contact email from previous thread for magazine and have sent the following:

Hi Jon, I found your email from an Audi forum thread which states to email you if I have had a delay in getting a balance shaft module for my car. I have a vw passat new shape on a 55 plate engine code bkd. I lost oil pressure on 6th October to discover balance shaft module failure causing my turbo to blow. Tried to order balance shaft with vw but they couldn't give me date for delivery but would have to pay up front. Wasn't comfortable with pay up front with no timescale. Took it to two engineering firms who didn't want to try to repair shaft. Local garage ordered shaft through Yeovil TPS now owned by vw heritage as they gave a date of 9th November. On 9th November date was changed to 2nd December. On 2nd December it was reported that no date is available. My car is stored in the garage not knowing when a part will be available. I spoke with vw customer services who couldn't state whether it would be 6 days, 6 weeks or 6 months. I have been hiring a car for the period so therefore out of pocket. Overall I think it is a disgrace, I just do not know what else I can do. Can you advise? If you wish to discuss I would be more than happy to do so. Kind regards.

So folks what do you think of my delay? Any advice?!

Morning All

I contacted Audi Customer Services direct to ask whether i needed to be concerned about my 4 year old BRE engined 2.0Tdi 170 quattro with this issue and this is the reply I got:-
I have spoken with our technicians regarding the issuethat you are describing and they have advised that there is not a known
issue regarding the balance shafts and oil pumps on 2.0TDI vehicles.

As I'm sure you can understand, we can't guarantee thatindividual parts will never fail. This is one of the reasons that that
we provide a 3 year, 60,000 mile warranty on every newcar that we sell, which can also be extended upon expiry.

I'm at 66k miles at present and aside from the injector issue That was all sorted in June) haven't had any problems, but this one is spoiling my enjoyment of the car.

Any assistance would be gretafully rceived although I doubt whether tehre is much else I can do short of selling it on or waiting for it "to go bang" so to speak. Does anyone know the name of the nex Managing Director as the mail I sent to Jeremy Hicks bounced back, so he has obviously "moved on"

Thanks in advance
