I Just did the 312mm brake upgrade to my 140 TDI 2007 A3. Awesome, easy upgrade. I managed to find 312mm calipers with carriers from a 170 2009 A3 on fleabay. 50 quid plus 20 quid postage. They fitted like a glove. I used my calipers as they were the same, so I'll be selling the calipers to regain some cashback, and my local friendly allparts have some great parts guys that supplied ATE pads and discs for 100 quid.

The initial bite is so much better, which I wasn;t expecting from larger discs, and they never overheat when I drive spiritedly!!!

Such a cheap mod, I would recommend anyone with 288mm discs do it.
 
interesting dude! ill look into this my 1.8tfsi brakes are weak! After a remap they certainly wont be up to the job (They arent now)

Also whats involved in doing this upgrade or change? What specifically do i need to buy

Callipers
Discs
Pads
what about carriers? Or do carriers usually come with the calliper unit.

wait let me rephrase so i have just searched!

The callipers on the 288mm are the same its just the carrier that you changed over and bought bigger discs?

i put R32 discs and pads all round and OMG so much better.

Farhan your is an sline so i would have thought you had the 312mm discs already? isnt the S3/R32 disks something like 345mm?

i am thinking of doing a bigger brake upgrade as i want to be fitting 19s next year
 
YES 345mm ON FRONT AND 310mm VENTED ON REAR

im pushing a bit more bhp through my poverty spec sport standard set up but i find them more than man enough for the job never had any issues with them at all !
 
Literally, all I changed was the caliper carriers, pads and discs. Much better than standard! I thought about the 345mm upgrade, but wanted it to look standard.

Ever since the day I bought the car, I thought the brakes were lacking. Now they feel like the brakes it always should have had, although my car before was a Civic Type R.

345mm conversion would be the ultimate option, I think you should go for it Farhan!!!

The replies to this thread have got me thinking about the rears now. Does anyone know what size the rear discs are on the 140 S-line? Is there a conversion for those from the 170?
 
good stuff so a straight forward swap pretty much. I will keep an eye out for some 312mm carriers

ash - although mines an S Line i have the same brake size as the 140tdi which is odd, My brakes are terrible it should have come with 312mm same as the 2.0TFSI unit and 170 diesel.

Elgy - I would dude but i really dont plan on modifying or doing anything major to this car, Im looking to purchase an S3 possibly in the future so want to avoid buying anything as such.

Im just keeping everything as OEM and mods as simple as possible so if i decide to suddenly sell i wont have a problem reverting to stock later. 312mm would be ideal as ill keep my OE carriers and discs and just swap back no big deal.
 
Sounds like your reasons for going the 312mm route and not the 345mm route are very similar. Don't forget that you can pretty much use the calliper carriers off of most vag group cars as long as its 312mm and fairly recent. E.g 2005 golf GTI, skoda vrs, Seat cupra, TT etc.... Just get the discs for the 312mm Audi A3 as I have heard some others are slight different, but I'm not sure which ones or how they differ.

I hope you find it as easy and problem free as I did!!!

I did this mod earlier this year and uprated the rears too - big difference for a relatively small outlay

Can't say I've found cause for complaint at the brakes on either of my 170s, and one of them has been blatted round the 'ring :)
 
Farhan, it looks like Chris has what you're looking for, especially if he's willing to label which side the discs and callipers came from, so you can re-match them all up. The pads look like they have plenty of meat left on them too. I would think the pads, discs, callipers and carriers would be a very good upgrade for around the 100 quid mark, but postage could be 20 quid on top.

M'coupe, what size were the rear discs and what size did you put on/what did you need to do it? I'm very interested in doing the rears too!!

I can see fella, do i need the 312mm calipers though? They would be surplus and im also planning on going for brand new discs and pads later anyway so would rather buy the other components new.

Also is it certain that my OE calipers which are for 288mm can be used on the bigger carriers

Theyare the same as what you already have. I figured 100 quid for the lot was worth it, even if you didn't use the callipers. The going rate for the carriers is 70 quid on there own. If Chris was willing to sell them at 100quid, you could always fleaBay the callipers to get a few quid back.

Or are my current pad size fine for the bigger discs. - Yes the discs you'll need are from the 170tdi or 2.0T. The pads are the same as what is already on your car, but if you're getting new discs, you must use new pads too.

I fitted front and rear calipers from a Mk5 Golf GTI with 312 x 25 front discs and the 286 x 12 rear discs. The front calipers came with the 312 carriers. I also fitted new brake dust shields and new rigid brake pipes as I completely refurbished all the calipers, fitted new seals and repainted with VHT Automotive paint
 
Id sell for £100+ postage don't forget the sale also includes the hoses and dust shields which u'll also need
 
Thanks M'coupe, I think I'll be searching the net for some rear callipers that will take the 286mm.

Chris, your post has worried me that I've not done dust shields that I should have. What do you mean by the dust caps?

sorry mate didnt mean to worrie you, the dudt shields are what protect the dics for debree from the road e.g stones, dirt, water, you will have some fitted now hovever they will not cover the full new disc as they will only be the same size as you old discs, its not a must but i would advise on fitting the right size ones to save damage to the disc.
