I didn't realise until now that the original back S-line bumpers don't have a detachable diffuser (unlike the similar looking 08-on facelift bumper seen on most new standard A3s).

It's actually part of the clipped on lower half so it must be sprayed dark grey after the rest of the bumper has been painted? Does anyone know a similar colour to this to repaint it? as it has some scratches on it and the body colour is showing through.

Sounds obvious enough! hehe, I was after trying to maintain the OEM look which appears to have some kind of metallic finish to it, but I suppose a flat dark grey will look ok! I'm thinking black will look too black if that makes sense.

lol... yeah it does make sense.
As long as you keep it matt then it'll look fine, imo. It'll get grimey in no time so that will take the "too new" edge off of it, and as its located low down and partly under the car it'll look fine.

it does come off... but you need to take off the rear bumper and then remove the 50 odd clips and extra screws to get the bottom part off.

be wild and paint it red!

I think he's talking about the diffuser part of the lower valance which is attached to the main bumper. That bit doesn't come of as its all one piece.

noooo stay! i still have an hour to go at work :(

Lol well the bumper is red right now and the scratched parts are showing red through - this is when I noticed it's one piece (the lower half). I've had it repainted all a different colour to match my car and will probably mask and paint the "diffuser" are satin as suggested.
