driver side rear arch rubs when there is 5 people sit in the back of my a3 s back ??

whenever there is 2 people in the back of my a3 sportback the DRIVERS side rear tyre rubs the arch i have no idea why and neither do the tyre places does this happen to anyone else and how do i sort this out because i want 19" alloys and if its doing this on my 18" alloys the plan for 19" alloys is cancelled

the car is on standard sport suspension and has not been lowered or had spacers put on the wheels

its on 18" BBS CH's originals not copies on 225/40/ZR 18 all road same tyres

ive had four wheel tracking done it hasnt sorted it im stuck with a dilema

please help me its doing my head in

well it sounds like a spring shocker combination, measure the gap between the wheel arch and the ground on both sides is it the same, is it easier to push one side down compared to the other? but I would guess it is a shock absorber weak on that side.

Does sound very weird to get rubbing with standard sport suspension. Is it all the time or just over bumps? Have you removed the legendary rubbing screw?

haha no fattys is the car lol an im not fat either lol, hmm good idea must check distance between the floor first and check if its easier to push one side lower down than the other hmmmmm, and whats the rubbing screw :S ?? and what happens if i remove it nothing will become loose will it ? any pictures of the screw ?

im getting a horrible extra line on my tyre as well due to this problem

I had Eibach springs fitted last week and it was rubbing like hell on every little bump in the road. Removed the dreaded screw and no more rub. The screw also gave me a nice line round the outer edge of my tyre.

The screw is located right where the rear quarter panel meets the bumper. You'll need a torx bit (can't remember the exact size) to remove it. It only takes a minute or 2 to remove both and don't worry, the bumper won't fall off or flap about in any way.

Don't just remove the screw and move on.
Removing the screw will probably stop your rubbing but will only be disguising the problem rather than fixing it.
Your car should not be rubbing at all if it is at standard sport height, and especially not just on one side.
You need to get it looked at properly.

Sounds like a suspension issue if its only rubbing on one side. Could be a duff shock or broken spring

I may be teaching a chicken to suck eggs here, but are the BBS CH's definately the correct ET/Offset for your car ? That size wheel and
tyre shouldn't give any problems whatsoever, regardless of how it is loaded up as it is the standard fitment for the S3 which sits even lower than the Sport......something's not right.

Open the boot and push down on the boot frame to see if your car bounces down and up more than once.

Yeap I'm with Ads & co, with your current setup, no way should the screw need to be removed, its stock so it is probably a spring or shock at fault.

i had the car checked last night the performance garage i use couldnt find any fault with the suspension its had s line springs fitted at some point in its life not sure when so its not sport suspension i only found out yesterday, im going to remove that screw as you guys advised me and see how it is with that removed,

the people in my car are not fat and im not fat either lol.

the BBS's came of an audi s3 8P2 but a 3 door and there are no spacers just standard alloy wheels with the right size tyres

not 5 in the back obviously, 3 in the back or even 2 in the back on either side and the car rubs goin round sharpish bends and bumps unless i got 3mph over them thats to slow lol

i will try the screw as you guys sugested and get back to you guys cheers for the help guys owe you one if it works


one more question slightly of topic but my brake pad light has come up which pads do you guys recommend all round rear and fronts ?

I agree. If they Were a different wheel width to the OEM item then id say just remove the screw. But seeing as they are Pescaras they shouldn't rub at all.

ill take the screw out mate and see if it sorts it if not going to have to check the camber setting, because thats the last thing i can do because i aint got a clue what else it could be

your wheels should never be rubbing. I have BBS CH 8J which are half inch wider than yours. Lowered -25mm on a car which is already lower than a 2.0TDi and didnt get any rubbing. only when i added an additional 10mm (spacers) did i get rubbing. It would be safe to say there is something wrong.

As expected... there is LOADS of space at your rear arches. If it is the screw that is catching then you've got FAR too much spring/shock compression going on at the back.

With all respect, I cant argue with this as you're getting nowhere fast, something is not right, for me its still a spring or most likely shock on that side that when weight added is acting very differently to the other, no way that should rub, I mean look at it, its higher than the tip of the eiffel

F this forum its jus abusive lol, i will look into lowering springs then aroun 15mm bit risky because i carry alot of weight in ther when i go cash and carry for my shop now and agen so cant have the car too low otherwise wont be able to get anything in there.
