Hi peeps,
Last week I became a very happy man, I've alway wanted a S3 for as long as I can remember & now I have one.
Its in really nice condtion with full service etc but one thing that did play on my mind was that the person I got it off only had it a few months....
Anyway, after getting it home & down my mates garage on a ramp I find out that the 4x4 isn't working!
We put it on VAGCOM but couldn't comm with the haldex, which reading about it on this forum could be a problem with the muti plug.
But now that isn't really a big problem as 2 of the big end shells has spun has damaged the crank & 2 of the rods.
which leads me to a question for you guys, which engine codes can I use as a replacement?
My engine code is APY, could I fit a AGU engine with all the bits off of mine?

Many thanks
Pat

Not to state the obvious but did you check the fuse? Sorry to hear about your problems :(

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Is that fuse 31? If so yes I did check that.

Check the earth strap too... there is a braided strap connected from the body to the rear subframe... can't remember exactly where it is but you will be able to see it looking underneath the car

Not sure which fuse number, should say in the book or on the back of the trim cover. Like said, check earth strap too. Also, has it been vag com scanned?

Read the posts above mate, he has checked the fuse and used vagcom lol ;P

You could fit an agu engine in place of yours. The agu lump has a different compression ratio but it does work fine. You could fit your pistons with new rings in a good agu block and it would be spot on, complete with a built in large port head conversion!

Thanks for the replys,
It's coming up to 110k so still low mileage wise really, the person (kid) was a bit of a breaker as I've found out!
Are you sure the comp is different with the AGU?
Also what else would you say to do as the engine will be out
Cheers, Pat

yes compression is slightly different, 9.5:1 compared to 9.0:1. this can be considered a good thing and possibly give some extra power when tuning (going off wellys car).
if you can get an agu engine for a good price its well worth the swap imo, large port head, high CR, and still has 20mm wrist pins.

have yoiu consider rebuilding yours with forged rods and new bearings etc? this would be a good basis for mods in the future if you do get carried away.

stuff you should consider doing if it hasnt been done is, oil pump, cambelt tensioner, cambelt, water pump, head gasket.

We have thought about a rebuild, but the crank is shot, I put a new set of gen shells in & with in 8.7miles it picked up again on the crank. The AGU does sound a good way to go. Where is the best place for uprated parts? Rods etc?
Many thanks
Pat

so is the AGU block a different compression? I thought its was the piston that altered the compression or am i getting mixed up? haha.

Get yourself on JBS, hmmmmmmm yummy!!!

IE Rods are what I want.

an agu can be picked up on ebay relatively cheap, and any parts not used can be sold to recoup some cash.

bill @ badger 5 sells IE rods. backdraft motorsport also. a quick internet search will bring up a few. just be careful of import duty etc.

Thought so, so you could run AGU pistons with uprated rods in our s3 blocks?

Looking at that sheet, its says APY/BAM/AGU are all 9.5.1 CR!

Wow, cheers for all the info!
I'm not in any rush, as I want to get it right first time, & now the engine has to come out I mite as well do the hardest jobs now.
I'll do some searching over the weekend for rods etc.
I'll keep you all up to date on what I'm doing, but anymore info/links would be great!
Again thanks
Pat
