The time has come to sell up and buy a diesel car!!! It costs average £84 quid to fill my tank and that only lasts 4 weeks=400/470 miles I generally only do 10 miles a day. Also need larger car to fit 3 very large drain on my resources in the back with out them moaning about not having any room. Been looking at Audi a4 tdi and ford Mondeo st tdci both in estate, can't make up my mind
 
Same here..... a full tank only last's me a fortnight if i'm very carefull..... it's just too expensive, gonna give my A3 to the wife and sell her Tigra , i've already got myself an A4 1.9 Tdi Avant Quattro thats sat in the garage whilst i fix it up a bit as it's had a hard life but should tidy up quite nicely .... didn't really want such a big car but i got it for a song and the Tdi will be welcome ... least i can still have a blast in the A3 should i need a buzz :p

Diesel ? Hope you saw Watchdog on tv last night.

I only mention it based on the fact you say you will only do about 10 miles a day.

How much MPG do you guys get?? I get around 530-600miles per tank in oil burner
 
Was it not to do with the new emission filters in all new diesels?
They dont get hot enough with town driving and break costing alot of £££
 
Mpg is for gays.

Never mind watchdog, my grilfriend basically works for Texaco and they were being warned months ago that retail diesel will be £2 a litre before January is out.

Personally I have seen 55mpg out of my 1.8t on a 140 mile run, and my car is full stage 2 KO3s running a decat, fmic, pcv delete etc.
 
55mpg ??? i find that hard to beleive is that average ???...... my car is stock and if i'm to beleive the DIS i've never ever ever ever got the average mpg to go over 30 mpg .... and i drive all motorway too and from work.... yes i can get to read 55mpg as actual in fact if i hold off the throttle going downhill on the motorway i can get it to read 80 odd mpg but never average .... what i do notice out of the 1.8t is it dosn't seem to matter how i drive it ... cruising at 60 mph seems to offer no benefit over cruising at 80 mph

u need to get behind a lorry and crawl at 55mph barely touching the pedal. Dont brake and carry your speed. Ive only managed 49.9 and tried extremely hard to get the magic 50 but it just wouldnt budge

Its the weight of all that 4WD guff you are lugging around.

It DID happen and I would do it again tomorrow if I cared enough. It was an average as I said, driven from Basingstoke to Plymouth. Sounds like there is something wrong with your motor, both my car and my girlfriends average 40mpg EASILY and hers is a 1.8t with a TIP, DECAT, PCV delete and stage 1 R Tech map. Unless the quattros are as bad on fuel as I suspect they are.

There is a thread I made on here and all my friends on facebook saw the average creep up every 10 miles as I posted a picture as I went.

Was it a black one by any chance? These things sell like hotcakes, even overpriced ones, been looking for a month!
 
My last car only managed around 21-23 MPG.. the 1.8T is far better!!.. When I picked it up in Burnley I brimmed the tank and still had over half left when I got back to Edinburgh (and I wasn't exactly hanging about) - pretty economical car by all accounts..

going back and forward work I seem to be in the high 30's -which isn't bad as I'm in a lot of stop/start traffic.. great wee car and engine! :)
 
Wow i'm shocked .... can only be the weight then as you say because the engine is running tip top ..... the Avant is a Blue one ,,,,, actually bought it off my Dad for a grand 2002 model as he was upgrading to a newer 5 door A3 .... he's not treated this one well though and a lot of the interior was damaged and scratched plus he kept catching the keyfob in his pocket whilst sat in the house causing the total closure system to open all the windows.... great when it's raining so there's quite a bit of water damage inside.... it's getting there now and should be on the road soon ... it's a nice motor , or will be ;) idealy i would have bought an A3 Quattro Tdi but there's not many 2002 models around for a grand :) maybe i could do a swap when this ones finished
 
Jag X type estate ftw, ford engines and chassie (its a mondeo) so not expensive to maintian if you go to an independant, dont know what your budget is or what age your after but 05 plates with 80k on the clock can be picked up for 5k higher milage ones even less. loads of toys too (leather, leccy everything, satnav) and from what i've briefly read reliable too (dont quote me on this thou). the 2.0 does 50mpg and will hit 60 in sub 10 so not too slow

they have an inherent design flaw in their sills (which has never really been fixed/resolved) - which leads to chronic rust.. the early models had open rocker panels.. the later ones or ones covered by warranty had box sections done iirc (which weren't rust proofed treated properly).. some dealers even drilled holes to help drainage (without then rust proofing the holes properly!! LOL!)..

That's shocking! Glad to know though, won't be going near one anytime soon, even though I think they look pretty good in estate form!

Have you reset the one that displays the average mpg? It calculate the mpg over the time/distance coverd from last rest, might Be why it seems like your only getting 30mpg. I get about 28mpg driving like a nob :)

Just to name a few reasons...

I enjoy working for Mazda, mainly because their brand aim for the past ten years has been to keep Petrol alive and prove that diesel is the devils work. Next years 1.6 120ps Mazda 2, 3 and CX5 will be better on fuel and chuck out 40% less Co2 than the current range of Ford diesels as well as being over 100KG's lighter than they currently are (which is already over 100KG's than their rivals). Which keeps them faster than their more powerful petrol and diesel market share competitors.

Their new diesel and petrol Sky Activ engines are 14:1 compression ration with optimized injection timing.

Wow, I'm a boring brand slave.

I have been a petrol head all my life, and like most mocked all the oil burning soot bags clanging around like useless tractors. I thought I would never drive a diesel EVER.

Then my circumstances changed, I got a mortgage, and my job is 50miles away, so 500miles / week is simply not feasable in a petrol. Along comes my first diesel the old 110bhp 1.9tdi a3, pretty lack lustre engine, nothing to shout about, your run of the mill diesel. Bored after two months I sold it on before I'd even had a chance to sell the old 1.8t, so went back to that and the 30MPG grind of £120/week.

Then after lots of looking around I discover there is a different breed of VAG TDI engines, the PD ("Pumpe Düse") engines, which are the performance line of TDI engines. After owning one for 18months now, I am a total derv convert. 130bhp with 180bhp from a simple remap, 50MPG without even trying, even driving around like a hooligan getting 45MPG at worst, being able to get where you want when you want without breaking a sweat, and quite happily revving out to redline, despite being only a measly 4k affair, does not detract from performance driving by any means. Not only is the engine a peach to drive, cheaper to maintain, has decades of lineage evolving from the original 8v 1.9tdi over the past 25years.

One of my fav things of the diesels is the complete lack of an ignition system to have to worry about / maintain. None of this spark plug, coil pack drama and complexity. Just squirt it in and compress jobs a goodun.

Diesels may be for gays, but i guess with all the money us diesel drivers save we got time aplenty for bumming.

Thought someone had to balance out the racist views. :p Team diesel, erm.... represent blud.

Oh and another thing, Mazda hahahaha now that is truely the sign of a gay boy, the only thing they have going for them is the rotary w@nkels, the rest of there tosh is just souless, heritageless, mass market, granny supermarket fodder, and the only reason they buy so much is they couldnt see through their cataracts and thought it was a honda. Any way good luck with the sales.

No thanks doublem lol I only do 10 miles in the s3 all over mullahs is done in the family focus but that's petrol and also getting tight in the back maybe I should buy a bus lol. I don't know what to do money is getting tighter and I work 7 days a week so running out of options when it come to saving money, tried putting kids on eBay but couldn't find appropriate category!!!!

In all seriousness though, I hate the ****ing things and have done since day one. Diesel drivers always give the economy argument, but that economy is coming at the cost of everything I think makes driving worth while. And it's terrible on the planet.

It's a silver 52 plate. TDI Quattro Sport. 160k, full black leather in very good condition. Ive fitted xenons, ambient lighting, EGR delete.

Hey I'm a screaming Hetrosexual and have a sad boring A3 1.9Tdi 110 remapped with .216 nozzles to 168 hp and 350 nm

does 45 mpg round town and 55 on motorway.

and it's not cost me more than £1500 including buing the car
so much for Diesel being Gay ;)

168bhp, thats pretty impressive. Its probably as fast as a standard 1.8t now :p
