I know you can check car mileages with VagCom, usually in KM's, how accurate is it?

By that, I mean if someone has adjusted the mileage on the clocks, will the readout from VagCom be accurate, or be tampered with also from the ECU?

pretty certain you cannot change mileage on ecu , so if it has been tampered with it will differ from dash readout.

no if the milage had been changed it changes on the ecu aswell
i know for a fact it does
if its had clocks non virgin clocks in then the ecu will show the correct milage

You can read the mileage only on edc15 and edc16 diesel cars, ifs in the edc17 but I don't think vcds has been updated yet. The petrol versions don't support this. The ecu mileage can be altered anyway and even the dsg mileage can be reset .

Well, I guess I'm just going to take a punt then. Going to see a car hopefully, but this dealer seems to be selling a lot of cars on 110k miles!? Not the type of mileage that sounds like it's been tinkered with, but the area where it's being sold is not what I call great, hence my worry.

I'm turning up with VagCom anyways, if he won't let me scan the car, then it's a lost sale!

there is a section in the a6 forum called 3.0 tdi buyers guide where a fella put his vcds on 3 a6s at a dealers 2 had been clocked so i am guessing you can interogate the ecu for milage tampering

Just check online with the direct.gov website and look at past MOT's that I'll tell you if the car has stared in back to the future.

Didn't get to see the car today, gotta wait til tomorrow, getting frustrated now, been looking for over a month, everytime one turns up, it gets snapped up in no time, and this specific car is in the spec/colour combo I was after from the outset! Grrrrr

its the first 3 years thats the issue before the first mot . a car could in theory do in excess of 50.000 miles a year quite easily what if some unscrupuless owner turned the clock back before every service ie first service actual 50.000 on the clock 20.000 have it serviced book stamped at 20.000 second service actual 100.000 turn the clock back to 40.000 have it serviced book stamped at 40.000 and so on it goes on and who is to know what as happened in the first 3 years

Or if they do 40k a year and clock it before the MOT, knocking 35k miles off.
