A3 S Tronic gearbox S3 S tronic gearbox differences

Hoping an expert might kow this!

The transverse 6 speed gearbox from an 2009 S3(not sure when the S3 switched the 7 speed longitundal DSG) is it different to the 6 speed DSG in the a 2007 Audi 2.0 Tdi sportback?

The A3/S3 boxes are the same but the gear ratio's are probably different. Neither has the, or did have the longitudinal 7 speed.

Thanks for that, I was wondering if the mecahtronics unit would be the same? certainly looks the same on the expoled diagrams but would need to be sure

I am sure there is differences from the old 7 Speed they fitted to the now 6 Speed fitted in the A3, I did find it odd that they fitted a 6 speed after a 7 speed as in my S3, another cruising gear would be great, but for sure ratios would be different between a box even on a different model in the same platform

The part number in ETKA for the mechatronic units are all the same apart from the "colour code".
The rev changed from AD to AM a while back but the AM rev is recommended for a few or the older models so is probably compatible. The description says "Mechatronic unit with software" so they are probably the same mechanically and are only different in software.
Here's some of the parts.... (don't take these for granted, I just had a quick search)
02E 325 025 AD Z7L (... AM ZFP new rev as of 01/03/2011)...for BYT engine
02E 325 025 AD Z7Q......for BKD engine (2.0TDI 140 PD)
02E 325 025 AD Z7Z......for BMN engine (2.0TDI 170 PD)...I think thats the correct engine for that code?
02E 325 025 AM Z21......for 09 S3 quattro

Now trying to get it coded or how to get it coded may not be an easy task.

I did read some where that tryingto get the right firmware/software on to a unit is vert difficult

I had no idea the A3/S3 ever had a 7 speed box..As far as i was aware the 7 speed is a low torque model for smaller capacity engines.

Looking back through the A3/S3 specification and prices brochures the only A3s that have been offered with the 7-speed S-tronic have been the 1.6, 1.2 TFSI, 1.4TFSI and the 1.8TFSI. This is of course the transverse 7-speed s-tronic as the engine is mounted transversely.

The 6-speed s-tronic was first offered as an option on the S3 in the December 2009 brochure. The 6-speed S-tronic was the same as the original 6-speed DSG offered by VW. The 6-speed uses the wet-clutch system and the 7-speed the dry-clutch system. The 7-speed was introduced on the less powerful VW and Audi models to help overcome the less power of the engines. Because of the level of torque available all 2.0 diesel engined A3s and the 2.0 TFSI have had the 6-speed s-tronic
