When it starts to go, does it just get worse or will it fail completely?

Bottom line is if one totally fails then it can wreck the gearbox.

What I meant was, does it get worse before it fails completely or is it a case of it starts to go and then totally fails all of a sudden?

Mine has the symptoms that its started to go wrong, clattering on warm start, slightly uneven idle etc, so I am just wondering if it is all of a sudden going to let go or will I get more noise , lumpier idle etc?

I had mine changed when my clutch started to slip a few months ago. Was only gonna do the clutch at first, but decided against that cause I didn't wanna end up doing it all again I'd it did fail. Hurt my wallet when I collected the car. Lol

Normally it tends to go slowly, with more erratic loud clattering and harsher gear changes, less 'torque' from the engine BUT sometimes it can just go unexpectedly soon after it starts showing signs of wear. Mine was rattling from 135,000 miles. It started becoming really loud and horrible at around 145,000 miles and by 155,000 miles i changed it. As you can see, i live on the edge ;-)
