If it snaps in the head, Im f****d. Car's misfiring quite badly under load in higher gears above 50mph too so it has to come out, but It's risky and Im unsure how to go about this =/

Can't you book it in for a garage to change them, don't tell them it's seized, if it breaks then it's their problem?

Possibly, but I would assume once they were unable to remove it, they would call me explaining that it may snap in the port and they would attempt to remove it but at my own risk. =/

Soak k. Wd40 and slowly try to edge it out, shouldnt be seized though mate, you sure its not been cross threaded?

I'd second the soaking it option, try plus gas... not too much.

Oh, and did you really type FML?

Cheers lads, I'll give it ago, how long should I leave to soak? Is it advisable to try to work it loose with a ratchet?

Just a thought: Are you trying to remove it with the engine hot, or cold? Whichever it is then try the other one, let it cool OR run it up to temperature.

It should be removed with the engine stone cold. The head expands when hot and will grip it more. Agree with the plusgas or some shock and unlock. To be honest mate you're better getting a mechanic to do it if you're unsure as they'll have a way of doing it if they're any good.

Let the car cool down and squirt some plusgas down the hole, you wont need a lot. Go away and have a brew/fag/sarnie whatever for 20 minutes and then have a go at it.

I'd use a 16mm plug socket on an extension bar on a 1/2" ratchet but DO NOT GO MAD. If it doesnt come out then leave it.

I've changed the plugs on my car this morning and used the above method without issue, although when I did them last time I didnt ******* them up and put a little smear of copper grease on the thread to aid release next time. Use the socket to put them back down the hole too so you know they go in straight.

Did you put them in last time?, you only have to just nip them up. Sounds like someone has wellied it up too tight or wrecked the thread.

I've only had the car since April, looks like the plugs have'nt been changed in years. Who ever fitted them was obviously a tool.

"FML" has become a regular term for me since I bought the S3!

My concern is, if I am unable to remove it, how is a garage going to?

Ha, its the lingo of a petulant emo teenager :D

Head off I reckon!

Because they are more likely to have had this issue before and are usually equipped to fix issues like this...

I had this on my s3. One plug was tight as feck. I just worked it back and forth with a bar and got it eventually. I was ****ting myself the whole time that the thread would be wrecked or it would snap.

Cheers lads, got a guy who says he can remove it, hes aware of the situation and says it shouldnt be a problem. So fingers crossed by the end of the week the car should be back to running the way it should!

Yeah and poss get a poor apprentice sacked???
Yeah and then he goes home and kills his family, for god sake it was a suggestion, if he does it himself and it goes wrong then it'l likely need a garage anyway, don't see a reason for "sarcasm".
And as for the DV thread, I really apreciate the thread being closed Tuffty <sarcasm/> before I get to defend myself, your not aloud to swear but people can jump on somebody for asking a legitimate yes/no question, and that's what it was, a question, too chavvy for some?
Clicky much, I love my car and really enjoy coming on a site with like minded people but it's soured because of an ignorant few, rant over, I feel better. Hope you sort the plug out.

Kai

Ive had this problem alot, never on my a3 but usually on audi engines (old school 5 cyl usually). Plus gas is the key! and gentle gentle, dont swing off it repeatidly and be aware of how hot your making the threads, doesnt take alot to produce loads of heat from the friction (hence lube).

I will say balls are required and as someone else rightly said, you will be crapping yourself while doing it - but have faith, its gotta come out if it cross threaded or not!

...and a poor one at that... as someone that works at a garage I can tell you that it would be very much the problem of the owner and not the guy doing the work...

...and of course you are entitled to your opinion and to do what you like to your car but it is not really the sort of discussion that needs to carry on as its a pointless one... as I said before closing the thread, no one would ever recommend removing the DV and no tuner with any presence of mind would map a 20v turbo with out one fitted... you got your answer so I closed it before the discussion actually turned into a slanging match... you have nothing to defend...

soured because of an ignorant few? so you don't think this forum is being soured by ill conceived comments such as

Oh dear....

Ok I hold my hands up to the advice being ill conceived, I'm mean no malice to anyone, but wouldn't it be easier to say that instead of being sarcastic, is there a need from yourself, someone who has a bit more standing on the site, I for one look up to you and other people that have such knowledge and skill.
If somebody asked me directions to a pub that I didn't like I'd tell them the way, not start telling them they're wrong for wanting to go there. My point is, point out my misdoings by all means, but at least be fair and stop people from putting what ever they like to put you down when they haven't got the answers, I refer again to the DV post, I'll leave it at that, just unfortunate that I couldn't of said it on there.

Thanks Kai

Granted, the sarcasm thing wasn't one of my better responses as it did hit a nerve so for that I apologise...

Fair enough...

Not had the oppertunity to get it sorted yet, 16 hour shifts...killer -.- should be going to a garage at the end of the week. Hopefully all wil run smoothly, unlike the car atm whey!!

Just be careful that when you get your car just how you want it not to drive it onto the road. You'll let clobbered within 24 hours by some ****** and end up with a smashed up car :(

Well Tom, I think we should collectively change your name to Jonny Raincloud!! lol :)

LOL thanks for the advice Tom, there are plenty of tools on the road in Cardiff, so I always have to be on the ball when driving round.
