Yeah, most likely! I had already planned to try ubuntu on it, but was wanting to give chrome os a shot first. Ubuntu it is! Now, to see whether this dodgy cd drive works!!

When you open it, it all but falls out. I am doubtful a cd will work in it, but we'll try. :)

just scrap it all and go out and buy a "macbook pro"....Done.

If you can't use the actual CD...

Get a copy of VMWare Player - it's free and will allow you to run Ubuntu (or pretty much anything else - even Chrome) on a virtual machine from within Windows... To install it (Ubuntu etc.) to VMWare, use Magic Disc - Virtual CD/DVD-ROM - also free.

Sounds doomed to me.... lol.

Some BIOS varients have the option to turn USB booting on or off, how old are we talking here?

Good shout Rob, I use that quite often for testing, and then delete when I'm finished... Gotta love virtual machines :)

Absolutely, they can be really useful.

When I tried ubuntu I struggled to get things working on it like Wifi. My linux skills are basic at best so I just got fed up with it.
Yeah, the 'proper' distributions have still got a little way to go before they're really user-friendly, but they're always making progress; Ubuntu improves with every build.

The other advantage of virtualising to play with OSes, is that things like networking etc. tend to be all sorted out for you too - VMWare can effectively bridge your host-OS's network access to the virtual one, in most cases 100% automagically. USB works well too, you can switch which OS is using a device using the VMWare system-tray controls.

I already have a macbook, this is a play toy that I might give to the wife as she drops things, or sell on eBay if I fix the disk drive.

Windows needs a format, it runs really slow so think a virtual machine would just crumble.

Spec is 1.73GHz, with 512mb RAM, no idea when it was bought. You computer people can suss that one out :)

Mine too, I gave up and reinstalled windows last time I tried years ago.

As mentioned though, I think I might just try fix the dvd drive and sell it on. Even as spares/ repairs they go for about £20 on eBay, better than a kick in the teeth.

Why yes actually, twice since sunday i'll have you know. Smash-On

Actually...it works :) Basically, the cd drawer falls off when you open it, but I just inserted a cd and it reads it fine. :) I had assumed it was screwed, but turns out it doesn't really need to be attached to work. It's a bit fiddly to get it back in, but once in works fine.

I've just checked on eBay and there's a replacement drive for less than a tenner. Might risk buying one to fix the drive and sell as a a working laptop. Some go for about £50 i've seen :)

Or, keep it as a special-time laptop...we'll see.

Yup sorting Shiz out I know nothing about really today, so it was a bit of a learning curve with a manual. I hate them days and hate manuals more.
Yeh thats the plan, Im going for braided when I change the pads next/ brake upgrade whichever I end up doing. It was the feed pipe apparently(don't know the correct ne for it). The solid part. Just read Dave and Dane had theirs fly through, happy days. Bet Danes *** was twitching though ;)
You might wanna give Yr mum solly's number I reckon they'd get on great with the bow wow action :lmfao:

Christ mate, you don't half sound like scott.
You don't need a brake upgrade, yours is only a standard s3 anyway, a tatty blue a3 tqs with a few mods could keep up with it!
No mate, you retired her. After an evening with you she knew she needed a change of profession, as she wasn't getting any job satisfaction :lmfao:
