H&R springs and shocks or Bilstein B8 shocks with H&R springs

Right have narrowed my suspention upgrade down to 2 choices. I want to go for a 50mm drop so I can either go for the H&R full kit springs and shocks or I can buy the Bilstein B8 shocks and twin them with the H&R 50mm springs. just wondering if anyone has used either of these set ups. The H&R full kit is the cheaper option so would be keen to hear from anyone who has used their kit.
 
The H&R Kit is a great choice but it can be a liitle harsh ride and the stance of the car is not good (back is higher-huge gap :O )
but the cornering is just beautifull with that kit!

Personally i would go Billstein+H&R Route and later some Arb's!
 
Consider Eibach Sportline springs for a more comfortable ride. I've just upgraded to these and they are of a similar comfort to OEM Sport springs.
They are also a progressive design (wider spring spacing at the top and more compact at the bottom) giving better small bump absorption but nice and firm when needed.. i.e. under hard cornering etc.
They lower 50mm at the front and 40mm at the back to even up the arch gaps, unlike the H&R 50mm. Although I think that H&R now offer a 55mm/40mm spring kits to achieve the same effect.

What model is your car.... sport/s-line/etc????
 
Its a sport already running eibach 50mm on the standard dampers and the ride has got shocking. don't know if I can get away with using those springs as they have been on the car about 10 months now thats why I was going to go for new springs and dampers at the same time.

Why do you think you need to change the springs?? It should just be your dampers which are causing the ride problem.
 
Just assumed that the springs would have bedded in one the standard dampers and that I would need new ones. Is this not the case? What damper are you running?
 
Your dampers are probably just shot. Your springs should be fine.
When you say the ride is now very poor, what do you mean?? Is bouncy??

I'm running Sport dampers too, so I'm looking at changing them somewhere down the line.
 
The ride is just very crashy and when you hit bumps and pot holes etc sounds like the suspention is on rocks.

why not just go for coilovers?
 
As you've already got Eibach springs, just go for a set of Eibach Pro dampers. They will be perfectly matched to your springs.
They cost about £450.

The H&R spring and damper kit is about £520, but I wonder how good they are because that's quite cheap when you consider a good damper kit alone usually costs £450-£500.
 
excuse me if I'm wrong, but aren't coilovers matching dampers with springs plus damping and height adjustability?

Weitec are in this price range and I've only read good reviews about them
 
Coilovers are matched springs and dampers, but are different to a spring and damper kit.
The general consensus is that spring/damper kits are more comfortable than coilovers.
Coilovers will also lower more than springs/dampers and, as you say, are adjustable.

If you pay £600-£700 for springs/damper kit then you'll be getting something which is pretty good, but pay the same for coilovers and you'll be getting a lower spec/range set.

If the OP is happy with the height of his current set up then there's not much point in him getting coilovers, he should just replace his shocks with uprated ones. It will work out cheaper and probably more comfortable than starting from scratch with coilovers.
 
my OEM shocks are totally knackered now, gonna get some Bilstein B8s on. Whats the best price people have got, and also which strut diameter do I order, 50 or 55 mm, as its not clear?

How many miles did your OEM shocks last??

Your strut diameter should be 55mm.

DPM Performance price competitively and will price match if you can find cheaper.

Damian, how do you rate Bilstein B8 dampers against Eibach Pro dampers??

I've got Eibach Sportline springs so I guess the Eibach dampers are the best match??
 
There is a thread on this forum specially about Bilstein B8 + H&R combo but i cant find it anymore.
This is a perfect combo and no coilovers or any other kits will not work like B8+H&R for daily use,track days,...!
My mate is got them on his S3 2007 and the ride is superb!!!
 
I was just looking around and the Bilstein B12 kit is actually Eibach Sportline (50/40mm) springs with Bilstein B8 dampers??
Gotta be a good match then.
 
Bilstein are the kings of dampers IMO. Many of the best handling road cars use them, including the current GTR. Think ill go for them and get em ordered soon.
My OEM shocks are on 71k but last 8-9K miles have been using S3 H&R -25 springs which wasn't ideal.

Hopefully my stock dampers will last a bit longer than yours then. I'm only dropped 30-35mm at the front and 20-25 at the rear.
But yeah, when the time comes I'm going for the bilsteins.

Ok,i asked distributor here in Slovenia for Bilstein,
he give me the price 280eur for rears and 220eur for front shocks = 440GBP!
If we do a group buy i must pay the shippment costs arround 40GBP so that's 480GBP for me :unsure:

So shipping would be £40 to YOU from Slovenia, so for us guys would be a lot more no?

Distributor is in Slovenia,so i dont pay any delivery costs!
If we would do a group buy i will pay £40 delivery costs,so it's better for me to order bilstein's here!
 
Anyone got S3 8p pictures with B8 H&R combo???
I would like to see the stance!
