Hi everyone I've got an a4 2.6 v6 quattro it's recently had two new cats and my mpg is averaging about 19 mpg I know it's a v6 but that's ridiculous, I don't speed much as I live in a little town but also have juddering when accelerating, similar to s4_dans post really but my mpg is really crap, for instance if I put say £15 fuel in it lasts about 25-30 miles please help as it's getting exspensive,

Get it on VCDS and read any codes. Cats won't affect your mpg. They just control your emissions. Your lambda sensors are probably shot. Just changed both of mine and my mpg has improved vastly! now getting an average of 34.2 on way to work and i live in a hilly part of the countryside!

Scan your car, but rest assured, it's not your cats.

As for the juddering at low revs....if i ever get to the bottom of it, i will let you know!

Think the MAF would cause mpg issues if it's foobard. Try unplugging yours and see what the dis says with the ECU registering it in default mode

I used to have a 2.6 quattro sport and my average was 19mpg, booting it 16/17mpg and open road I managed 48mpg once but mostly about 30mpg.

Is the juddering only at low revs while driving? Only on corners?

Hi thanks for both replies the juddering happens at low and high revs on straights and corners but it's intermittent. Didn't realise they did a sport 2.6 what's the difference and how do I know if mine is a sport

for Some reason, the 2.6 V6 was a strange engine. The 2.6 V6 was 150Bhp and The 2.4 V6 was 164Bhp. The 2.4 and 2.8 V6 engine share alot of items. ALOT of items. Yet the 2.6 V6 doesn't seem share a item as such. Seems like a random engine. IMO the 2.6 is something i'd steer well clear of personally. Not saying it's an unreliable engine or costly engine to maintain, but it just appears to be a 'black sheep' engine so to speak.

If the juddering is happening at both low and high revs, i'd change the HT leads an plugs along with giving the car a service.

I believe the sport model has slighlty lower suspension setup and sport interior (seats with bolsters etc) but I may be wrong. May say on log book if its a sport model. Or put your reg into Autotrader on 'car value' section and see what comes up.

The 2.6 is a 12v engine, and was carried forward from the older Audi 80/100 models. There was also a 2.8 12v which produced 170hp and was pretty similar to the 2.6.

The 12v engine was dropped and replaced with the 30v version in 2.8 and 2.4 guises. The 30v head is obviously far better, hence the higher specific power figures.

Spot on, the 12v 2.6 was dropped around 1997 I think whereas the 12v 2.8 was dropped before the A4 was produced. I loved my 2.6 but not much tuneability

That's the only thing I don't like about my car is there is no tuning at all it's a great car and it's great inside full leather carbon fibre trim digital climate control another problem is whenever I type my numberplate into anything I.e insurance quotes autotrader ect it allways comes up as an s4 not an a4 so I have to change details all the time. Thanks for your help guys anymore help would me much appriciated

The 02 sensors don't like being removed for some reason. I don't know why. Once disturbed they tend not to last long afterwards in my experience, especially if they were hard to remove in any way.

There are defo 2.8 12v A4's!

Ah I didnt know that

Thats a high spec for an early A4

Seems very unusual to me that its appearing as an S4 on insurance databases, as those databases are based on the DVLA's information.

What year is the car? Any pics of the engine?

Hi it's a p reg late 96 I think, that's what I thought it was a bit high spec there is a pic of the inside in the pic thread and I'll post up a pic of the engine later, it always comes up as an s4, at first I didn't realise and insurance was costing me 150 a month third party.
