After a lot of thought I have decided to bite the bullet and fit a performance clutch kit. I have looked at what various well known suppliers have to offer but wondered if anybody had any recommendations?

My 1.8T/AEB will be running close to 300 BHP (all being well) and I need something that will comfortably cope with that kind of power on a daily basis.

Most are imports from America. Or you`ve got the TTV flywheel and mount the S4/RS4 clutch to it. Seen some S4 owners saying that event the standard clutch doesnt like massive abuse though but obviously thats launching 4wd not 2wd and a heavier car. Or you have the solid fly and S2 clutch i have just fitted. That can hold 300ft/lbs but it can be a bit tricky getting hold of the clutch at a decent price these days obviously as the car is 20years old now. 034 motorsport still do uprated clutches though but again its just the importing ballache and extra cost.

Main factor is your torque but obviously you arent going to know exactly what it is without the mapping done. You`d just have to roughly guess and aim a bit over when buying a clutch as a lot of clutches arent rated in power. Mainly torque

ECS tunings look promising but it nearly £600 after tax and import duties.

I contacted ttv racing and they could do me a solid flywheel for around £290 Inc vat that would take a 240mm S4 clutch I'm thinking this route and seeing what performance S4 clutches are out there or just fit a standard S4 clutch as i reckon it will be more than capable of handling 300hp.

Standard pressure plate and disc from Audi for the S4 is £276.53 inc vat. Thats with the surcharges included as obviously you cant give your old one back. Add a release bearing to it and it takes it to £311.94 so really not much difference to the ECS kit. But then i dont know if the 600 includes the tax`s you`ll get hit by aswell?

I did mine for much less.

I baught a used 1Z flywheel for 30quid, a B6 S4 friction disk for £45 (ebay) and a VW LT Van clutch pressure plate for £60.
Flywheel machining was around £90 and the release bearing was £20ish.

The B6 S4 friction disks are still readily available on ebay from Parts Depot, and are genuine Audi. The van clutch was probably a one off, but i'd imagine if you baught the pressure plate new from sachs it wouldnt be much more than £100.

So are you running a 240mm clutch on this setup ?

Will have to bare that one in mind the next time i need to change mine. Although the car might not even be in my hands that far down the line considering i only do 5k a year now. Unless i burn this one out before then from excessive launching and track use i have planned lol.

TBH given your FWD i think you'd be hard pushed to kill it, unless you have a huge power hike and fit some drag radials!

Hmm interesting where did you get the flywheel machined as I may pop to my local scrappers soon and see if I can source one for a good price do I just need any 1Z FW from a longitudinal engine or is there a specific one I need, did you have to change the FW bolts or use existing ones or use any sort of spacer plate ??

Pretty much and yes you`ll need fly to crank bolts to mount it up as they`re shorter

Yeah sorry pressed wrong button haha. Used to quoting for only 4 bolts.

i just reused the old bolts, which the bloke usefully supplied with the new flywheel.

The flywheel is fitted to 1.9TDi engined Audi 80's as well as 2.0 petrols from the same era.

I've had two from ebay now, first one from an 80TDi which is in my mums FWD 1.8T running the stock 1Z clutch, and the one in Shed was from a B4 Audi Coupe 2.0. Both cost around £30.

I got the new shorter bolts as i was just following a guide and wanted to do it properly. Had been sh!tting a brick anyway if it was all going to be fine and work ok up until i picked the car up from having it fitted lol. Thankfully its all good and feels awesome.

Cheers for the input. The options listed are the options that I have been looking into so I just need to decide which way to go.

Depends on the money you want to spend to be honest. The S4/LT clutch would be more than enough for what you`re going to be getting and its cheap. Depends if you wanted to go further on the power in the future and whether the set up you went for now would cope with future gains.

That's the debate I'm having but now aragorn has posted up some costs I may just go with that as it seams more reasonable and I like the idea of it being a modded FW as I like modding ha :)

Aragorn: can you post the company name/number where you got the flywheel machined coz if they've done it once they shouldn't have any probs doing it again lol did you have to give them the clutch at the time of machining ??

They`ll need the clutch and the fly to work out where to drill and retap the bolt holes yeah. Just wish i`d have had mine lightened at the same time but completely forgot about asking :( Still, only cost me £20.

What's the weight of the 1Z flywheel?

more or less the same as the standard one.

From memory its a bit lighter, but the coverplate is heavier so it cancels out.

Yep i think ECS said that the standard set up was 16.2kgs. I weighed my solid fly and S2 clutch and it came out bang on 16.2 again.
