In my quest to research the range of diesels I am now considering the 3.0 tdi after much deliberation. I've ascertained there are two versions, the 203 and 230bhp models, ideally i think I need to look at a pre march 2006 for the tax and is it the DLV model which is the later engine? Having spoken to my local dealer warranty chap.... it seems the 2.7's and the 3.0 are the best engines in his expereince, the latter being better than the 2.7 he says, so the 3.0 diesel I am now considering too.

Currently my S3 gets roughly 150 miles to £40 of fuel urban driving, mixed pace.....

What I would like to know is roughly what a 3.0 diesel would return in the real world

Hi Mate,

The 3.0 TDi Quattro 233bhp is the TDV Limited edition, this is the one i have.

I have had mine remapped and its currently at around 275-280bhp with almost 600nm of torque.

Costs me about £80 to fill her up.

The most i have ever got out of a full tank with careful driving was 450 miles.

I usually tend to get around 350-400miles with everyday driving, and a good belt every now and then.

Obviously you will get better MPG on long journeys but it will still be little thirsty sometimes.

Saying that, it is still cheaper than your S4 by a long way.

cheers Daz..... what was the difference with the TDV, did they map up the same or was the difference between the two engines beyond software?

It's not massively more per gallon than mine given what I get weekly for £40, well....enough to make much of a saving, then again it is a 3.0 car. This is the reason i'm still considering the 2.7...... I'm not gonna get the sort of pace I have in the 'S3' ;) , saving grace for the 3.0 is that I would be as close as I could be with the transition to diesel.

I can't swear to it, but I seem to recall that the 230bhp TDV version of the 3.0TDi (like mine and Dazmo's) has a lower CO2 rating than that 204bhp, so the annual VED is still £245. As for fuel consumption, bearing in mind mine is an automatic, and is in completely standard tune (i.e. not re-mapped), my overall average for all types of driving is about 35mpg, ranging from late 20s for cold, stop-start town driving to a best of 45-46mpg on a steady 70-ish cruise.

I would also wholly recommend it. It is an absolutely brilliant engine, and of course, it's only available as a Quattro, so you will still be able to drive it (carefully!) when it snows.

The TDV is fitted with a diesel particulate filter. Some people don't like this, but I believe it contributes towards to the lower CO2 rating, hence the VED.

thats brilliant info thanks for that..... very much appreciated, for the power increase was that just mapping on Audi's part or different turbo?

Ive only had my 3.0tdi tdv for 4 weeks, but so far for £55 im getting 340miles-ish, ive noticed that if you really pussy foot around then it can be really economical, but thats no fun, so according to the trip (which we all know overreads) im getting 40.2mpg combined over 2k of my driving...which out of a 3.0 engine didn't think was half bad.

mine is a manual, and unmapped at the moment.

I had a golf gti before, and thats better than that, so i am happy :)

I am being sold on the 3.0 tdi here chaps :)

I am also considering the 3.0 in the A6 too, it is going to be Avant for my dogs, the A4 is smaller and looks better, but the A6 i saw today with LED rears looked amazing, that coupled with the proper sat nav and later toys might sway it!

The A4 is smaller than you think, if space is an issue, I'd plump for the A6.

Mine is the 204bhp manual 3.0, I've just paid £260 for road tax and fuel consumption is averaging 35mpg.

cheers Rowdy....its mainly as I have a pyrenean mountain dog and retriever, i can get them in the S3 with the seats down but its not ideal or safe in an accident, the idea was to be able to get them both in the boot without reducing the back seats..... i'll have to gauge the boot size on the A4 but have a feeling your spot on there

Definitely the A6 then mate. I have 2 dogs (smaller than yours) and its just comfortable for them. With dogs the size of yours, it'd be tight. The A4 is deceivingly small to be honest.

i agee, a4 is small, not much bigger than my golf interior wise. my dads got an a6, admitedly its the saloon, but compared to the a4 its cavernous!

I would deffo go for the 3.0 TDI engine if i were you.

It will out perform most petrols and i beleive the car does around 0-60 in 6 seconds!

A very quick diesel indeed, safe to overtake with, safe in the bad weather, reliable engine and sounds fantastic.

Oh and the 3.0 TDI generally holds it value better than other variations as they are quite rare, especially the manual.

cheers Dazmo.... are you talking roughly 6 secs mapped? as most books state over 5 on all variations....

This is one of the selling points, i like my fast cars.... nothing has really given me any grief in the S3 which is also making it boring as silly as it sounds, therefore practicality, depreciation is actually getting a look in for the first time in my life

Full tank (62L always leave 3-4 to save pulling sediment through the lines) I'm getting between 450-470 miles, for 2/3 motorway the rest is town driving.

Mines an auto as well. Not bad going really.

whats that in £ Tabsy? to fill the tank.....I normally gauge mine on £40 a week which gives me 150 miles foot down and normal driving

cheers Daz....so reckon the 200-225 per £40 sounds about right - bladdy good news :)

At the end of the day mate, your buying a very fast diesel car, if you get it remapped it will out perform most petrols and is an even more powerful machine.

It will feel alot quicker than your S3 because of the massive amounts of torque and the V6 rumble sounds fab.

For a 3.0 engine i think its pretty cheap to run, compared with other cars i have had, as you have so much power on tap you will find you dont need to floor it everywhere you go, its effortless.

I also had mine lowered by 10mm with Eibachs and fitted an RS4 anti roll bar and it improved the handling even more so.

Hi, I have a 2007 3.0ltr 233bhp manual tdi quattro avant and its giving around 38mpg and thats at 90mph++ i have just returned from cornwall to london with loads of luggage 3 people and roof box and it still pulled like a train and gave 38 mpg . Cost about £85.for full tank. This car has changed my views of diesel but i still miss my S3.

Its about £70-78 to fill it.

I go on litres, so always try and cram the max amount in which usually equates to 60L.

At current prices (£1.35) that usually costs £80-82.

Which reminds me, is there a vent button the tank for a B7 A4? Would help exenting the fuel range a little.

Bump for the above question!

Oh and I've just driven to Germany, Belgium and Holland with a track car in tow and managed 31mpg... not bad going I reckon :whistle2:

Just bought a 3.0 TDi Avant myself, how can you tell what version you have power wise? didn't realise there was 2!!!

I think the TDV engine (that's the one with the diesel particulate filter and 233PS) was introduced in mid 2005. So if your car is a 54 or 05 reg, it probably has the 204PS engine, but if it's 55-reg or later, it's almost certain to be the 233PS version.

Thanks for that, mines a 56 plate 07 model
