Is the 8P s3 worth the money?

I felt the 8L was better put together than the 8P which I felt was made to do what it was made to do without having anything in reserve eg clutches/injectors/hp fuel pumps.

The 8P is a nice place to sit in though LOL

Agreed, the 8P sometimes feels like an overstretched Golf GTi ancillary wise

I thought the 8L was pretty up-to-date until I got my 8P... different league.

The clutch was a real surprise,in that it barely copes with the standard torque values, and really is made of chocolate.

Whether or not it was an attempt to dissuade people from tuning the thing or not,I have no idea, but it is pretty poor.

The injectors are good for up to about 400bhp at a stretch, and the HPFP will get you to about 360bhp,but the engine will be well down on mid-range torque due to fuel flow restrictions....basically,the stock bits aren't that bad,it's just that when you really do go for some extra power, and by that I mean over 30% above stock, then you expect to have to change some things.

Seats are good though...!

You can tell it's a bank holiday weekend they have let the muppets out

Did you have to have a special manifold made for the gt30 as there all in one as standard arnt they....

The stock manifold for the K04 is a one piece thing,so what you need is either the BSH kit here...

BSH FSI GT Turbo Kit (Work of Art) - BSH Speedshop

or the ATP kit here...

GT3071R Turbo kit for FWD 2.0T FSI, MKV VW Golf/GTI/Jetta and Audi A3 (500HP) : atpturbo.com

Neither are cheap, and both will require a LOT of work to make them fit a UK spec RHD car,as little things like the brake master cylinder get in the way.

The BSH manifold can be bought separately, but of course you will still need the turbo.....in any case, right now, most of us would recommend a GTX3071 which would have to be sourced from the USA,as this offers the flow of a 3076,but with the characteristics of a 3071.

Also add in RS4 injectors,RS4 fuel pressure regulator, and engine internals if you go for over 440lbs,and I would say budget on about £4k plus VAT and labour.

Bottom end rebuild will add a few thousand more, and top end if you want more revs will add another couple.

Cheaper than 8L BT conversion then, what are the rods good for?

Stock rods?.....about 450bhp and 440lbs

What's the price of the 8L conversion out of interest?

With supporting mods 6k+

That's probably the big difference then,as getting to 450bhp and 440lbs does not mean a bottom end rebuild.

I did however forget to include a few bits...you'd need a bigger intercooler above 360bhp,and the Proalloy is about £900ish fitted,so I guess all in you'd be in the same general region, and obviously other bits you would need such as brakes, suspension and diff controller will add to the pain.

The gen2 controller seems a decent bit of kit, have you noticed a huge difference?

If you've done all of the other things such as coilovers( I chose the kW v3 for mine, and you need to spend ages adjusting that to get it right),and ARB's and adjusted all of it to minimise understeer, yes it does make a difference, but I think that doing it as a first step would just be lost in the general understeer the car has from stock.

The brakes are also a weak area after Stg2,as they do fade rapidly and most of the aftermarket pads such as EBC are no fix at all for that.

I see you have a good brake kit on yours,so you'll know how much difference that makes.....the weight of the OEM stuff is amazing...my VWR kit was about half the weight.

The thing is.....you start with a £30k car,and then spend easily the thick end of another £10k on all of this stuff, and yes,it's then a lot faster than an RS3 and pretty economical and user friendly, but above that, the costs ascend rapidly, and the gains are a lot smaller.

By comparison with the Escort though,it's still relatively good value motoring!

Ive had a mexico mk1 and like an idiot let it go for peanuts a few years ago....
have you driven an 8l s3? in standard form the typical audi understeer is pretty bad, the r32 rear ARB sorted that its a perfect balance now...

Never driven the 8L to be honest,as at the time I had the Escort, and honestly that not only demanded your full attention driving it,but also your wallet's full attention to keep it fed and provided with parts.
The suspension had an incredible appetite for rosejoints and damper parts, and sub 10mpg mileage was just daft.

I know what you mean about Mexicos...those fetch very good money now......the Escort was a very good car for anyone entering rallying, which is where it came from, and where it went back to once I sold it.
To build a good GpN car from scratch would be about £30k on top of the base car,and an engine would have been about £12k alone....keeping one on the road was entertaining but silly.

Its not daft at the time though eh Alex...:),
Im just about ready to test a manifold for frankenturbo in america, and with water/meth should be seeing close to 350bhp witch is decent enough for me,
is your fuel consumption dire then Alex?
btw what weighs the most between the 2 s3s?

The current S3 is about 1500kgs,and the weight never goes down when you change models,so I'd guess it's heavier.

Fuel consumption can be as good as 35mpg,if I drive gently,or well down into the low 20s,but given the traffic,it averages 30mpg.

WMI is another thing I will add,and also a Sorenson manifold is on the list, but I have the engine rebuild to get done and parts are holding that back.

That is very good consumption for your set up, i guess there is a lot of lag....
WMI if installed correctly with the warnings is a briliant mod

No more lag than the original K04....

If you choose the correct aspect ratio and so on,the lag is minimal, although what you will notice is the boost comes in around 500rpm higher.

Keeping the stock CR does help of course...

No lag difference between the standard ko4 and a generic GT3071 ??
That is hard to believe, are you on a standard IC?

Honestly,there is very little difference.

I've got a ProAlloy I/C and the CR is stock, and will stay that way.....those who've been in it or driven it have all said much the same...power and torque arrive a bit higher up,but little if any extra lag.

I've been used to mountainous lag on both my Cosworths(although ALS on the Escort removed that, but made the thing undriveable on a road)and this was a surprise.

You come over here on a wind up...you slag off the interior of the 8p on an 8p thread then click dislike for any one that replies in kind.
Get a life mate. there is plenty of strife in the world without people like you stirring up trouble where there was non. If i was a mod i would have niped this in the bud straight away. it pretty obvious how it would pan out because people like you can dish it out but you cant take it.

I've read page one of this thread and can't understand if some of it is a wind up, and if so how much

I've had an 8L and an 8P - I loved my 8L and upgraded for the simple reason that I wanted a newer and better version, and thats what the 8P is imo. Also they didnt all come with a flat bottom steering wheel, it was an optional extra/upgrade although I'm sure this has been answered anyway, am I **** reading all 3 pages of this odd thread lol.

Just dislike him back lads .Hes probably bought 4 cans after scrapping his old knacker in
