Might not be to everyones taste but I bought an ipad 2 3G and made a cheeky holder out of some pine, found 2 old bent radio keys, attached them to the wood and bent into a shape like a 'Z' them so they would slot in under the 'ESP' button and cardholder. Tried to cover it with left over vinyl but had difficulty with wrapping it round the corners so primed it, 6 coats and then sprayed it matte black. Problem with that is that left it in my car down here in france, got a bit too hot and the paint bubbled up like a teenagers face so its back to bare wood for the moment!

I bought the app copilot HD Europe for £44.99 as I was pretty over my garmin old school sat-nav. It is amazing.

I also have xcarlink bluetooth unit so can have all my movies and songs through the stereo

Question!

Whilst I prefer it in Black than Pine(!):

a) Does it integrate with the hifi system, or is it just 'for show'
b) you don't know what the temp is on the heating controller!

Interesting concept, but until you can order a climate control / head unit replacement module and just sit an iPad in portrait mode with a kind of dash display on it I'm not sure I see the benefit?

Is there any risk it can be knocked off going over a bump, and end up in the footwell?

Yeah bluetooth on the ipad and bluetooth with the xcarlink as mentioned above so have full music, movie and sat-nav audio from the ipad through the stereo in the car. that is the reason I have done it, for amazing Europe sat-nav and itunes in my car. Better than having to change 6 CD's you get board of after a while.

I live on the south coast of france and constantly have it set on low with the air con on so it doesn't bother me. Its not too low to see the fan speed control though.

My car is remapped and I even tested it full acceleration up hill and was ok, (It is a diesel not an S3)

wow love this,, and even better you can play it through the car speakers ,,was talking to chris (chorley car audio)about fitting this in the dash of my s3 ,great work, love it..

That is pretty smart.

In that case then I can imagine it's a far better interface than standard OEM unit (apologies, missed last sentence now that I've re-read it :sorry:)

Nice bit of innovation.

Could work out a lot cheaper than rns-e less wiring, and way better screen size.

You got any pics of the build m8? also some pics of it without the ipad in would help can figure out how its staying there

Yeah sure but I am working away fora week so will have to be then, sorry about that. I think it was just luck how it stays there, the angle of the wood in relevance to the angle of the dash are at 90 degrees to each other and the groove in the wood, I chiselled it out deep enough and a little wider than the ipad so it would lean back. Downside of it at the moment is that it does rest against the to 2 big knobs on the double din symphony unit and the occasional vicious pot hole can cause it to mute......

Pics up soon.

That looks really smart, fella. Methinks you should go straight to the top of the class for ingenuity! I can see a good few people looking forward to your How To for this. Well done! x

Awesome this mate well done!

After making enough holders out of pine to start a small fire, I went back to basics and from a B&Q style shop down here, I found 4 shower gel hooks and gave it a go. They hang of the air vents and it hasn't fallen yet after 400 miles, it's really solid. simple but effective. I also put 2 rubber nipples on the 2 big radio buttons to protect the buttons and to make it more stable. Not that pretty but after a while you forget that they are there.

Or there's this monster from Brodit:

Brodit Active Charging Holder for Apple iPhone | Brodit Charging Cradles | Dashmount - Dashmount

But it's 60 quid and you'll need an Audi A3 specific dashmount bracket too. I had one for my Nokia N95 and found the holder excellent but the Brodit dashmount bracket rubbish. For my iphone I got another Brodit holder but a "Dashmount" branded bracket from Dashmount themselves that clips between the vents:

Audi A3 Sportback 2004>2010 Vent | Audi | Dashmount Brackets | Dashmount - Dashmount

But it was 20 quid when I bought it!

Thats really well done, and looks really good. You will be starting a trend now.

that looks good!
does it knock on the bottom as it is hooked on the top?

now that Tomtom have released the iPad compatible app it would function so much better!

It is rather impressive Ash. So much better size for viewing.

Cheers guys, Well the weight of it holds it in position so it doesn't move around at all. The little pads I put on the radio buttons are a sticky rubber texture so that helps too. I've been round some pretty tight corners, so tight that the ipad thinks you've flipped the ipad round and it rotates the display 90 degrees! the ipad doesn't move around and doesn't bounce over speed bumps either. I am running copilot europe navigation and its amazing, £44 from itunes. the volume button is also just accessible too.

Just waiting for the day where it fails and the suckers loose suction!!!

Interesting install. I am looking at mounting an iPad mini in my S5. Has anyone had any luck with Padholdr iPad holders? I'm looking at one of these kits and looking for install pics Audi

To prevent the suction being lost could you not buy a decent hard case which the iPad clips into then bond the suction cups to the back!

Pretty funky idea and looks cool. Good having the bigger screen too. Best of all is you can just take with you when you leave your car so the low life scum of the earth can't get their grubby mits on your ipad.
only seen this once in YouTube, think it's on an rs4 but that was built in to the dash more
