Chrome window trim removal/fitting advice

I've just got myself a almost immaculate 2005 A4 S-line. The only negative is the chrome effect window trim is ruined beyond repair so I've got some new parts to replace it. I understand to remove/fit id have to remove the door cards, windows etc etc which with my level of skill is a BIG no no. So my question is... Who should I take it to?

I've spoke to a bodyshop and he said "He'd have a go" but I didn't really get a good vibe from that. I also rang a local windscreen firm and they believed that the trim just clips on and off. Even when I told him it doesn't, he still believed it did so id rather not let him loose on my car.

Any ideas?

Im in the Teesside area if anyone knows of anyone?

If not just a rough idea would be great.

I've been quoted £250 for my local stealer to do the work but thats just daylight robbery.
 
My local stealer wanted £700 + vat to supply and fit black trim :asskicking:
 
Well the stealer priced the trim at £350 then £250 to fit so it would be close to what they wanted from you. They must be on drugs :drag:

Did you take it somewhere else or not bother?

Didnt bother, but since carbon wrapping my grille, boot trim & interior, now think im gonna black vinyl wrap the window trim
 
Wanting minde done too. seems like a bad design fault. Let me know if wrapping it is worth it. As I think it will be my only option.

I ended up getting the trim brand new for £240 from a VAG parts dealer so Im fairly happy, if I can find someone to fit it correctly for a fair price I will have had a result.
 
The door trims you need to remove the door cards, and then there is 5 popup rivets that you need to pry up (once you see it you'll know what I mean. I don't think you have to remove anything else before you can get to them. The roof trims and riveted on, and I have absolutely no idea how to get them off.

I've vinyled my trims and had it like that for about 4 months now and its holding up great, and looks fantastic!

The job aint to bad go down to your local dealer and see if he will print you a plan of how your doors are put together and then you will have an idea of what to do if you do it your self definately a 2 man job or else you might end up scratching your paintwork once you have done 1 you will fly round the others basically you strip the inside of the door down and the top half that holds the glass in the frame comes out of the bottom half then you will see rivets holding the trim in place if you was anywhere near me then me and a mate could do it for you
 
If you decide to go down the wrapping route, I know a top place in Middlebrough who has carried out mine and several of my friends cars, to a very high standard.
 
I've just bought the film that Bez linked in, gonna have a go with that and I have an idea for the curved bits so may be able to do it wiithout removing from car but we'll see.

Ditto, just bought from Bez's link, so another DIY session on the cards, hoping it turns out as good as the carbon wrapping :scared2: lol

its east and goes round the curvs
use ur lass.s hairdryer u need it
just above the rear quarter theres a join stop and restart there
 
Its quite easy to wrap the trims, only tricky bit is the rear quarter window. But if you buy enough so you can try it a couple of times, you'll get the result you want.
 
Ok nice one I'll give it a bash, might turn up tomorrow if I'm lucky and I'll have 2 days to ger it done in time for AITP
 
My roll turned up today, along with the rain :banghead:
 
Mine too, give it a go go anyway but it was too windy which made it bubble, it's gonna be harder than I thought as the films basically just amalgamating tape that electricians use which makes it stretch as your getting it off the role.

We'll see.
 
use the hairdryer !
 
I was doing but in the wind it was just to much, even cutting the tape left it blowing all over. was a nightmare.

Gonna try again after show.
 
I had a bash at this yesterday and didnt do too well with the rear window. I actually took it off the car, which I didnt think could happen, and its still no good... gonna do a search for some patience on ebay and give it another go when the weather is better..
 
It's easy if it's off the car mate, take it indoors, get a blade, credit card, hairdryer and some scissors, pot of tea, get yourself comfy AMD go
To town on that chrome ha ha!

It's not too difficult, doing it outside in the wind is the hard part.

quick q? giving up on wrapping it myself.. thinking of spraying it them all. Just wondering if I was to take the chrome off the car. drilling the rivets out. where does the rivet go? the head would need to be drilled off to get the trim off but where would the back of the rivet go? (more roof trim than door trim) cheers.
 
I WOULD NOT do that if I were you dude, it will never go back on properly and the paint will never stick to the paint properly unless you prep it perfectly. Seriously if you pull it off them a massive well done to you but I wouldn't go near it!!!
 
Wattsy, how did you remove the small rear window trim without damaging it? Doe's it just pull off or something?
 
I've booked my car in with a windscreen fitting company, they say they can remove and fit the new trim but we'll see........

The guy tried to say the trim simply pulls off even though I told him that they have rivets so I'm in two minds to take it to them or not :shrug:

well I was covering it and lost my cool a little... ripped the black tape off and it came off a little.. Shat myself but then noticed that it just clips on so I used a plastic spreader and prized it off the car slowly... start at the bottom then slide towards the boot to get the top guide out...
 
Anyone know of any places close to Newcastle that can vinyl wrap the trims?
 
I think any sign writing firm should be able to do it. My friend works for a sign writers and has stashed some matt black for me. At some point in the next month or two he's going to spend a Sunday putting it on. I think that would be the best option rather than a physical change because of the high probability of the job going pearshaped.
 
I got my grille, all the window trim and the chrome strip on the rear bumper done gloss black. All in came to £100.
 
A very good price, Abb also recommends him.
I may take a trip down, how long does it take as I will have to hang around while it is being done?

Also did you get gloss or matt black?
