Hi, New here.

Just bought my first Audi S3 age V reg.
Took it home on a 90mile trip and could smell an oily smokey smell coming through the air vents.
Opened the bonnet and the big pipe leading into the turbo was smoking :/
Not loads, you couldn't see any smoke until the bonnet was open.
There were no warning lights up and the temp gage was fine and seems to be running great.

Also my break lights are flashing on and off so i pressume there faulty!

Any help would be great as the Audi main dealer cant fit me in for 2 weeks.

Thanks

Lucy

Welcome to Audisport Lucy!

When you say brake lights do you mean the display on the dashboard or the actual tail lights? Tail lights will bethe brake switch, dash light will be the front pads :)

The oily smoke is a bit of a worry though, is there any oily residue around that region??

Oh and don't take it to Audi, Bill (Badger5) isn't too far away from you, your car will be in safe hands there

Thanks for reply!

Yes the tail lights are flashing on and off when not breaking and not turning off
When ive turned engine off ( I have too press the break again to turn off)

No doesn't seem to be any oil ( my bf said its an oily smell though)
I then drove another 9 miles back home after I'd let the engine cool down
And there was smoke but not much and wouldn't have noticed it unless really looked up close!
There is also no smoke coming out of exhaust as I had someone follow me home!

The car has been sat around for a while before I bought it - could it be that?
I'm trying to get intouch with allaudi specialists in brislington but no answer!

Where is bill based too?

Thanks for replying

Its in the garage now! Ill let you know what it is when they call me tomorrow.
He didn't seem to think it was too serious though.

Thanks guys :)

Its the only place I take mine!

the oily smoke sounds like it's the breather for the engine, it gets recirculated for emissions bullshirt. it shouldn't be doing it that hard that you can see it on idle though.

You will see smoke on idle after a run from the breather system. I would bet that the breather pipe to the TIP has either split or come out.

That will be a simple fix.

lol because i looked at your photo album of your car on your profile!

Yeah bought it yesterday!

LOL, that's cool. I just thought you might have seen me blarting about. I'm down Bristol way quite often.

My bargain number plate, £170!

:D

When I first got my 99 S3 my PCV pipes were all perished, this made an oily smell come in through the air vents. I didn't see any smoke though.

hope that's all it is for you.

Just got a call from the garage and the hoses/pipes? going into the Turbo were worn and split so thats what was causing the smoke and smell.

and yes was the break sensor needed replacing.

Also had to have all new breakpads as they were redstuff and wern't really suitable for me, new discs, cv boot, break calipers siezed, bushes.
also other stuff which i can't remember - the previous owner had neglected the car basically.

Will get her back tomorrow afternoon!!!

got quoted £360 + vat so think thats pretty good

Hi - if this car has been neglected the least you can do is give it a nice fresh oil change :)

so, you bought a car from someone, it goes faulty within 90 miles and you have not thought to take it back?

sorry to say it, but the cars probably been like that for ages just the previous owner couldn't afford to fix it, if i were you i'd be wondering what else was ignored

Never works that way unless it's from a dealer.

Private sales are sold as seen. There is no comeback once the V5 is signed.

Bottom line Lucy, look after the car and it will look after you.

I would get it serviced personally if it were me, then YOU know it's done.

I bought a TT recently and have serviced it and done the cam belt and water pump as well just so that I KNOW it's done in my own mind.

These engines can be tetchy. Another thing to bear in mind is that if you hear 3 beeps and see the oil pressure warning light:

Low_Oil_Lamp_Red.jpg

Then STOP like ASAP. Low oil pressure will write an engine off very quickly indeed.

Other than that, just drive and enjoy.

Hey guys, He said he'd done a service and cambelt change and was going to send through the info as was claiming it back on his farm or summet!
I got cambelt checked and it has been done so i pressume service has been done too

I couldn't really have taken it back if its private could i?

Anyways its running fine now, i only paid £4000 for it (which i thought was good?)
They said at the garage offen the yellow ones are worn and ragged to death but is in good condition through out!

Fingers crossed

Thanks for the advice Welly :)

To make you feel a little bit better..I bought my first s3 2months ago and after a few days the cracks started to show.

All is fine now after having a few bits done, service and oil change, coolant flush, new brakes front & back, some new hoses where needed, new coil packs, air filter.

He is running great now and I love driving him!!

I just don't get why people neglect these cars!!

Like other people said I would change the obvious things like oil, coolant, spark plugs just so its nice and fresh!!

Enjoy!!

Thanks :)

Still looks like theres a slight (and i mean only and tiny) bit of smoke coming from around the turbo area still, taken it back up the garage twice and they had put it on diagnostics checked everything and say its fine. Im still unsure thought  But she is running great!

Could be the rocker gasket leaking, then the oil running onto the turbo manifold and then smoking, mine was doing this.

oh right they did say there was a small hole in the rocker cover that wasnt anything too worry about, could be sorted at next service. they didnt say that could be causing the smoke but makes sense! thanks :)
