So whats the difference between the 140 and the 170 diesel engine ?

Turbos are the same size but slightly different design
Injectors are different
DPF as N8 said
Cams are slightly different

Also powaaa!

A3 Sportback 2.0 tdi 140 0-60 9.6
A3 Sportback 2.0 tdi 170 0-60 8.1
A3 2.0 tdi 140 0-60 9.4
A3 2.0 tdi 170 0-60 8.0

Hope this helps! :icon_thumright:

170 feels more alive. 140 dies abit high end. as mentioned dpf in 170 can be a pain in the bum if it wants to be. also injector issues sometimes however vosa sort it out now?

Get the 140 for cheep tax and spend the difference on a map to 180bhp and have the best of both worlds.

Difference in drivability too. 170 feels a bit gutless at low revs setting off from a standstill. Almost like the turbo feels bigger and takes a moment longer to spool up. Just my tuppence worth!

Sorry to high jack but how much would you expect to pay on a decent all round map i.e power/torque gains and keeping/gaining decent economy? Am I right in thinking you can get a plug and play removable unit or a ECU remap? Is there much difference?

180ish bhp and 300ft-lb, improved MPG and yes you can get a plug and play unit. Shark Performance do the STS, thats who I would recommend.

No truer words have ever been wrote!
My 170 feels like this and it's the only thing that let's it down, trying to get a quick getaway and then it bogs down till the turbo eventually spools up :'(

Yep but once it's spooled up God it hammers through the gears like a mad dog chasing his last meal.

been wanting to get my 140 mapped for a few months now... just worried for its turbo and recently its been feeling a little dull on gears 1 and 2, like its too tired to go anywhere... but its still a cracking car!

well i was thinking of just getting the turbo cleaned anyway... the car just past 130k so i would think its time for a good ol clean... the drive is still great tho even at that mileage... had my GF's mates in my car the other day and he was saying how its such a smooth ride... when i told him the mileage he was shocked and started asking details on what to look for when buying an A3!
Audis sell themselves really

Couple of hundred cleaning the turbo now is a worthwhile investment as opposed to a complete refurb / replacement :)

The new 170's are in the same tax band as the 140DSG. (the manual 140 is still cheap)

I originally ordered a 140 but after driving my dads I felt the need for more top end poke. This coupled with the cheaper tax than I had realised was a bonus so I've changed my order! (I had a 170 Leon prior to ordering my A3).

i love my 170. i know what you mean when you first set off but going through the gears it is great. i hunk i like 4th the best. but one word of advice. you use a LOT of diesel when you are going very fast. (140 mph) not that i would know:no:
