i've surfed trying to find the answer but cant - if i was upgrading a dsg car without mfsw to mfsw, do i need an upgraded steering wheel controller or slipring?

etka tells me that for the elecronics modules are:
8p0 953 539 H, F, AH, A, G or J - i know F works but what about the others
and does dsg automatically work with mfsw, and does cruise always work with mfsw

sliprings are:
1k0 959 653, D, A or C

afaik, D works with mfsw and dsg (its the only one available for 2008 cars) but what about the other ones?

thanks for any info

Get in touch with 'mattandrew', he has just carried out this mod!! We swapped over my MFSW to his non MFSW and yes we both have DSG I have a flat bottom now also, which is nice :p

I have just fitted cruise and a MFSW to my 2004 DSG A3

Cruise would have worked with my existing ECU 8P0 953 549 and slip ring 1K0 959 653 but i also wanted to fit the MFSW.

After looking into this to fit a mfsw I had to upgrade the ECU to 8P0 953 549 F and the slip ring to 1K0 959 653 D

Sorry i dont know about other versions

Does anybody know if a 1K0 959 653 C slipring would work with FBSW for a 53 plate that comes with a : 1K0 953 549 A ?

Hi Dunk,

I retrofitted, a MFSW and cruise to a blokes car the other day. His car was an A3 2.0TDI DSG 2005 55 plate. I originally thought that he may need a new slipring and steering ECU, but then i thought, as he already had the DSG functions on his non MFSW that it should accept the MFSW no problem, as i believe, some one correct me if i am wrong, if you have DSG, then you should already have the highline steering ECU!
Anyhow, i decided to try it anyway, and guess what, if worked fine after coding in VCDS. also the advatage of moding from a non MFSW with DSG to MFSW with DSG is that you also have the correct wiring harnes for the airbag, so no need to go and spend that hard earned cash on an adapter that is not needed.

Hope this is of help fella

Danny

Thanks....

It states that my old module is type 1 and 1K0 959 653 C is type 2 as below :

Does this mean I need the type 2 and this is the correct one ?

Type 1: 1K0-959-653 and 1K0-959-653-A
Type 2: 1K0-959-653-C and 1K0-959-653-D

Thanks....

The difference between type 1 and type 2 is that the type 2 has the steering position sensor in the slip ring and the type 1 doesn't.

Are you talking about fbmfsw or fbsw ?

Also it depends on what airbag system your car has. Is it single or dual stage ? You cannot mix the two.

Yes I'm want to install the FBMFSW.

I think it's single stage .....as I have the big old steering wheel as it was the first one's fitted to the first audi a3's ..

You need a 'highline' steering module to work a mfsw. Your version 'A' is midline and is not compatible with a mf wheel.

A bigger problem is that if you have single stage airbags then the airbag control module will not operate a two stage airbag. Some people have fiddled around and wired the connectors together but there is no guarantee it would work if and when required !!!

Ok thanks......So what slip ring do I need ?

I would say Type 2 with a highline steering module. What year is the fbmfsw ?

I haven't bought it yet ......Starting to buy the little bits first..... So the Slip Ring 1K0 959 653 C should be OK ? or is it only compatible with only a certain fbmfsw ?

Sorry mate - I think you may be missing the point.

Unless you can buy a fbmfsw with a single stage airbag (I don't know if there is such a thing) then your car safety system will not support the wheel that you are planning to fit. It isn't just the drivers airbag that is single stage in your car, it is all the other airbags as well. It would mean that you would be mixing airbag systems and using a single stage control module !

The wiring loom and connectors are also different on the fb wheel.

To answer your question then yes the C version would be ok but only with a suitable steering module.

OK....Do you know if there is anybody else on ASN has done this type of upgrade from an old 8p like mine ? surely somebody has come up with a way to make it work

The 2 different slip rings are 1 is supporting everything & other doesnt, the steering ANGLE sensor is connected to both types on 8P's from 03-09, from 09 they started to switch to the newer K steering cu & steering angle sensor didnt exist anymore & got the reading from the rack, they still use the same slip ring on 8P's.

I can supply the correct slip ring.

Only way to make the airbag 100% work is to fit a dual stage system.

I've just bought an 1K0 959 653 C . Just starting slowly to collect the bits....then I'll head down to u in 2 months time....or so...

TBH your best bet would of been the D slip ring, of which I have :)

Ok hold that for me.....I only bought this one because it was £20 ...one question why do u think D would be better?

Cause D is matched as the known daddy to allow all to work.
